ducted roof air on "67 Airstream??

mardi 30 septembre 2014

After reading reviews and seeing the ducted A/C's on the 2015's, I got to thinking about doing that to my "HVY MTL" trailer.

I know they have a bulge on the roof but people are saying they are quieter than the ceiling mounted ones. I am doing a full gut and the interior panels are off, and have extra ribs and such for reinforcements so now would be a good time to do this. Any thoughts on how to go about this??

Best way to carry bicycles?

What is the best way to carry one or two bicycles in or on an Airstream trailer? Attach some hooks inside to attach them to a partition? Outside bike racks?

rear window

My rear window glass exploded while driving today. I need to find the replacement glass and latches. Cant seem to find them online so I must be looking in the worn place.

I have a 2013 30 foot International Serenity.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Wood Grain Door Panels for Dometic RM100

Title:

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

These are the original door panels from the original Dometic RM100 refrigerator in my 1979 31' AS Sovereign. I had to replace the fridge and could not use these panels in the new one. They are in very good shape. They are vinyl wood grain (like the rest of the cabinets) on a thin sheet (about 1/8") of 3-ply plywood. Included are the plastic trim pieces and screws that hold these in place.

Panel dimensions:

Freezer panel 13 1/8 x 23 1/4

Refrigerator panel 23 to 23 3/16 x 35 Panel slightly tapers, but installed on my fridge you could not detect it; all edges were covered.

To install you bend the panel slightly, left and right and insert the sides into the door trip. Once fully inserted into the side tracks, you slide the panel down (refrigerator compartment) or up (freezer compartment) and insert the plastic trim secured with two small screws in the corners, to hold them in place.

Please note: these panels are from a Dometic RM100 refrigerator. Panel dimensions are given above. I suppose it would be possible to cut them down to fit other smaller refrigerator units.

Strange occurrence !

So today I got home, went outside& my dog , Maggie was under the Airstream barking & wagging her tail. She was scratching the screen for the refer intake under the trailer. So I thought there was a mouse in there; went to hardware store to buy traps, etc. When I opened the refer service door , I found a small bird in there!( alive) How did it get in there?! I didn't realize a baby bird that couldn't fly could get in a small space around the propane line !

1963 Overlander Project

I wanted to share photos of my new (to me) Airstream project. It's a 1963 26 foot Airstream Overlander. I also wanted to start a thread because I'm a newbie and have a few questions.

The story so far is...

I'm a forestry student at U of M and have been looking to build a tiny house, or live in a trailer or something to save myself a bit of money. I ended up looking for an Airstream because I figured it would hold its value if I fixed it up.

Three weeks ago I saw an ad for a trailer for sale in north Washington. So i saddled up my little Nissan Exterra with 215,000 miles on it, drove out, and pulled this guy 300 miles back to Montana.

I've broken down the restoration down into "phases" as I get the money to finish each one. The first phase was to gut the trailer, tear out the floor, clean it, and get it in good enough shape to sleep in. My plan is to live in the trailer as I finish it.

Phase 1

The inside was in pretty bad shape, plus the floor was rotten and probably had some asbestos and other nastiness in it.

I started gutting the trailer, keeping a few pieces to use as a pattern for when I make new cabinetry ect.

I ended up pulling out about 4 pickup loads of guts out.

Once it was empty I started on the floor

The floor was in bad shape! Everything was rotten, the installation was all shredded and chewed up. I found a couple mouse nests, and a few hundred pine cones!

Clean floor! I didn't want to drop the belly pan, so I just wore a respirator and pulled everything out by hand into garbage bags.

At about 1AM, finally down to the frame. Shop vaced out the last bits. I used a TPS solution to clean the walls, floors, everything. Then sprayed bleach to kill any hantavirus, then washed it out again.

I grabbed some cheap plywood from our used home resource store for about 25$. It's going to be a temporary floor until I get the insulation and marine plywood I intend to put in. I'll use it as a pattern when I get the more expensive wood.

Phase 1 took about 4 days, I was tired!

Ive been sleeping there the last couple weeks. I'm getting ready to start Phase 2.

Reattaching the belly pan where its starting to fall off, patching any holes or leaks with Vulkem polyurethane sealant. Laying down reflective polyurethane on top of the belly pan, then putting an R30 basement insulation between the frame. Over that I'm bolting down marine grade plywood from a local lumber yard. Its about 70$ per 4x8, but i'm never pulling out that floor again!

Over the plywood I'm putting down laminate underlayment and I have some old hickory flooring that's going in on top.

Anyway that's my project. Advice would be appreciated, and also any tips on the best way to attach the belly pan to the steel frame.

No Running Lights...HELP!!

Hi everyone...

About to get on the road so i decided to replace all the lights on the exterior of my trailer.

The problem is now all the running lights do not work.

Heres what i have checked so far:

1. took apart the 7 pin. not it.

2. checked all lights for good ground. not it.

3. Tow vehicle is 08 tundra. checked fuses...not it either

4. screamed.several times...did not help. but felt better.

5. cleaned connectors of all 7 pins with wire dryer...nope.

6. post to the forum...for help...

If anyone out there has any suggestions. I will say the rear running lights were not working prior to my changing them out...

The turn signals work fine. the brake signals work fine.

All running lights are on vacation.

It feels like a no power issue, or blown fuse...but is there a fuse on the running lights?

Help me...

Beware of Scams

<h3>TIPS FOR BUYERS</h3>

The best way to avoid fraud and make sure you know the condition of the item you are going to buy is to shop locally. Make sure to take a look at the item for sale. It's very common for sellers to post the pretty pictures. Often they conveniently overlook the negative issues which can come as a surprise to many buyers. A nicely polished trailer might have a rotten floor. There could be a dent on one corner that you can't see in the photos. Going to look at the item for sale is the best way to mitigate this risk.

If you cannot go inspect the item for sale try to find a volunteer inspector to go take a look for you. Keep in mind these are kind folks who have volunteered their time and don't expect a detailed report from them. It's also suggest to reimburse the inspectors for their gas and time if you feel compelled. You can make arrangements with them individually. You can search for inspectors by State at the following link:

http://ift.tt/1rrsNgL

Another important aspect to ensuring a smooth transaction is to verify the seller. Chat with them on the phone, find out who they are, how long have they owned the Airstream, who did they buy it from? Get their full name, connect with them on facebook, search for their name and phone number on Google, ask for a copy of their drivers license and make sure all the data matches. You can also click the link in the ad on their username and look to see when they registered, how many posts they have on AIR Forums, etc.

MAKE SURE TO TALK WITH THEM BY PHONE. If you feel confident that this is a person you can trust, then ONLY use Escrow.com as the escrow service to protect your transaction.

Lastly, BUYER BEWARE, don't get sucked into having to close on a deal so quickly that you act in haste. On all classifieds sites there are sellers who are bad people and would like to steal your money. Be careful, do your research and protect yourself by only using Escrow.com as the escrow company for your transaction. NEVER use a trusted 3rd party Escrow service besides Escrows.com.

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

1997 Safari used only a few times and then closed up for 13 years. It has not seen any of the use or road wear of a trailer its age. All systems have been checked out and reconditioned. The interior has been completely restored. All original Airstream hardware was retained. Gaucho was updated with a very versatile dinette area. Front sleeping area can be either a single or a queen bed. Updates include new deep cycle battery and new 2014 propane tanks. Wheel bearings and brakes are like new.

Advice on yearly maint to keep my International in great condition

Hello everyone! I am looking for some advice, or links to other threads, on what I should absolutely be doing to the exterior and interior of my 2012 International as preventative maint. Just want to make sure I am doing what I should be doing to avoid problems down the road. Any advice on what to buy and what to do would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Our new addiction

As I stated in my Member introduction, this is my first RV of any type. My wife and I spent a lot of time considering several different options for travel trailers. Ultimately, we couldn't get the idea of and Airstream out of our heads, so we ended up buying one.

Unfortunately for us, we bought it at the end of the season for going camping in Alaska where we live. As I mentioned in my Member introduction post, I picked up my trailer from the port of Anchorage just last Tuesday. We were pretty excited and decided to take it out on an adventure before it has to be parked for the winter.

So, we packed it up and took off out of Anchorage after I got off work on Friday. Heading down the Kenai Peninsula with our first stop in Skilak Lake. The drive was awesome, I was pleased how well my F150 handled the trailer. I would say that for most circumstances a properly equipped half ton truck can easily accommodate the load of the 25 foot trailer as long as you don't go too crazy loading up the bed of your truck with lots of other toys.

We didn't get out of town until close to 7 PM. In the summer in Alaska, that is no big deal since it stays light until....well lets just say it stays light. The weather was decent for our departure:

By the time we got to the lake, it was dark. So we got things set up and hit the rack. I found the bed surprisingly comfortable! It was nice to be camping in something that provided heat since the temp dipped into the lower 30's that night. We had a little light rain over night, then in the morning there was a little ice.

We went with some friends who brought along who brought along his home made drift boat. The day was spent catching loads of beautiful Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden. As the evening arrived, the weather cleared up some more and treated us to a beautiful sunset:

To be continued.....

is this a decent tow vehicle?

So I bought this old argosy and I'm 80% finished with a full gut-and-remodel, and I'm planning on towing this thing around the country next year to work out of (I teach people to build wooden boats so I'm always hauling wood and tools) and of course I don't have a lot of money to do it with.

Now I don't know squat about tow vehicles so I thought I'd present one choice to wiser minds than mine, is this thing I found on craigslist a decent tow vehicle? one concern is that I've heard you want the closest distance from the rear axel to the tounge and this has quite a bit of overhang, but I don't know how much that, or anything else, really matters. Hoping to get 15mpg, maybe that's a pipe dream? Help, I'm new and naive!

Power Jack Wire: Where Does it Terminate?

I've got a 2008 Classic 25fb with hydraulic disc brakes.

I traced the power wire from my Barker jack and it comes off the wire bundle that is also has wires connected to the trailer brake safety switch on the A frame. The wires are wrapped and I can feel a bulge as the loom curves under the A frame, so that must be the fuse for the power jack (Barker Superjack). The wires then enter a hole in the frame. I guess the two wires for the brake safety switch must go to the hydraulic brake actuator but where does the power wire terminate to, somewhere in the interior of the trailer, maybe under the front bed where the converter is located?

That brings up another question. Is the power wire for the LP detector wired into the same place? I'd like to move it downstream of the Use/Store switch so its deactivated when the in the Store mode.

Do you actually like towing your airstream? What to expect on first tow.

Do you folks like to tow the airstream, or is it merely a means to the destination? After all, they do say that the journey is the destination...

Can you guys give me some basic advice on trailering my 28'? I've towed boats, but only short distances. My first tow will be a nice one -- over 1000 miles.

Any advice and insight appreciated.

Checking Interest - "Caravan to Yucatan 2018"

I am opening this thread to gauge interest in the community towards participating in a caravan to the Yucatan Penninsula, Mexico come summer 2018, or later. From my perspective, it would be a caravan of a decidedly archaeological/historical nature, though while we're there, beaches, alcohol, dirt-cheap rugs and plates would also be admissible as well.

If you are interested, drop your forum names either here or a PM to me individually. I am open to feedback on both self-run (communal) or agency run caravans, with any feedback from members whove undertaken this excursion in the past. Yes, feel free to discuss concerns; but let's not tangent too badly please?

Windows

Thor has announce that Airstream has maxed out it's production, and therefore will add, best I can recall, about 50,000 square feet to it's plant.

Increasing the size of the plant won't help, unless more employees are hired, which hopefully will be the case.

While that bit of news is fantasic, it still will take a while for them to get caught up with the back log of windows that have been ordered. Airstream windows are made in the production plant.

We have had some windows on order since this past July.

Therefore dealers are caught in the middle, in that they can't ship something that Airstream can't ship to them.:o

All any of us can do, is be patient.

If your going to travel and have a broken window that can't be replaced because of the time delay, all you can do is fasten a thin piece of plywood to the broken window sash. Paint it, so that rain will not cause delamination.

Airstream Tales and Trails: Walkin&#39; The Line

Pre-Dented for Carefree Towing!

lundi 29 septembre 2014

Years ago a friend of mine successfully sold his battered classic VW Bug by placing a reasonable price on it and the caption "Pre-dented for Carefree Driving"

Thinking it over, that's a good tag for any Airstream with a "Beauty Mark" or two.

I've met another newbie looking for an Airstream... a bit unfocused as most of us were when we first started. He'd been to Safford RV just off I-95 near Fredericksburg, and told me they have a new manager in charge of selling the Airstream brand. Said the man seemed to be very knowledgeable and was a straight shooter. That would be a pleasant upgrade, so anyone in Virginia - you might want to give it a look-see.

At any rate I knew of a slightly used unit a bit bigger than he was considering, but it had one feature we both really like - and a bit of damage to the skins. I mentioned the price break and he admitted he'd liked the bigger unit but the price of a new one was a bit out of his range. So he made a long distance call and is going on a trip to look at a "carefree" pre-dented Airstream.

On this forum many people, especially those who've been posting for years, have had more than one Airstream - some serially, and others as part of a family of Airstreams. If I won the lottery I'd have more than one, and possibly an Avion and an Oliver too.

On the other had, there are a lot of people who buy an image of camping in an Airstream and find they really would rather have a hotel and catered everything. So there are a lot of Airstreams (as well as SOB's) with very low miles, sitting in yards and storage lots, abandoned or for sale.

The one problem with the FIRST Airstream is that you really don't know enough about living in one to get the right one the first time around. I've been an advocate of starting with a gently used one, just so you don't take a huge hit when you trade it in for the "forever" Airstream that you'll get down the road. I'll add "pre-dented" to that too. A lower side panel with an 8 inch scratch would cost $7K or more to have replaced, but a 9 inch flag decal would cost three bucks! No Brainer?

And how many of us aren't all that obsessive about FULLY redoing a vintage one? I know two or three families with 10 to 15 year old Airstreams that have had minimal changes - and the families are just as happy campers as the ones with new beauties or vintage beauties.

I don't know how I seem to have become a magnet for newbies looking for their first Airstream, but I believe this is number 3 this year. Anyone else finding they're helping others on the way to aluminitis?

1979 Airstream Safari 23 - Colorado

Title: 1979 Airstream Safari 23 - Colorado

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

Up for sale a 1979 airstream safari wide-body dual axle 23'.

This trailer is partially stripped to assess the floor condition and get rid of the vinyl, but all systems are in place and the interior panels are still installed. Currently the kitchen and bath are intact save for the closet being removed. The gaucho frames are available for re- building if desired. Basically, it is ready for a new interior, the floor is exposed for study but looks very good to me. '79 had the better plywood clamp design, is still alclad (polish-able) exterior, and was late enough that the rear sagging the early '70s experienced and other issues were fixed.

I saved a few panels for templates for interior work, and the aforementioned gaucho frames. The dual-pane windows all look good except the one by the door, which has the bubbled appearance and can be fixed by removing the interior pane. Tires are a few years old but good condition, axles are good for age, towing lights all work, e-brakes work.

This would be a great trailer for someone wanting a modernized airstream, short 23' but 8' wide body, blank slate. best practice would still be removing the interior panels and belly pan for cleaning, but that is up to you.

The recent history of this trailer is several years of storage in Wyoming and Colorado, and it lived most of its life in Nebraska prior to that. I have the Nebraska '83 plates... currently clear title in Colorado.

Migrowave beeps

This is a weird 1. When switching to generator or plugging in the microwave beeps & counts. PO said trick is warming control panel w/ a hair dryer! He's been doing it for years. After warming it works ok. I'm thinking the overlay must be bad or sticking. Parts still available?

Argosy steel cap rust

I am starting to repair the surface rust that has collected at the windshields edge, and around the marker lights.

I have sanded the rust off and etch primed it. Pulled up the marker lights and cleaned underneath. Plan is to run a light coat of bondo over it to match the paint thickness and sand clean. I plan on painting it with roller and brush. This not an A+ resto job, just want to clean the rust and repaint.

Pretty straightforward but just wondering if anyone else has done this and has any advice/tricks? How about the paint to to use(it is Argosy beige) I'm sure it won't match.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Title: 1977 Airstream Sovereign 31 - Oklahoma

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

For sale is a 1977 31' Airstream Sovereign. It has tires that can be towed but should not be used permanently. It currently has air over hydraulic brakes which would likely need to be converted to electric over hydraulic with an actuator. Univolt needs to be evaluated to see if it will work for future use. Blackwater tank needs to be replaced. Open Title.

1961 Ambassador with welded on Torsion Axles

I just took a serious look at my axles on my 61 Ambassador, the Torsion axles are REALLY welded on there! I looked through the most current 300 posts and found NOTHING on this welded on Axle subject (A search brings up literally 49000 threads).

If I converted over to leaf springs and straight axles, this would be a SIMPLE "New axle project" and even if I miss the alignment, it's SIMPLE to adjust.

Anyone have any suggestions for me? I'm on a budget, so taking it somewhere really isn't an option. I have welders in my shop, so that's not a real big deal. Getting the existing axles off without destroying the frame is my biggest concern. It doesn't appear to be factory installed.

If I just cut out the axle and left the plate, that wouldn't me to bad as it appears the top of the axle isn't welded to the bracket, but I would assume I can't put that much heat on the rubber torsion springs???

I really do understand having the independent suspension is the best way to go, but touching these axle plates out does not seem like a great idea unless I want to get into a full on Frame repair too (Which the frame appears 99%, beside the back bumper area on the curbside, that I want to redo).

EVERYTHING I read talks about "Bolted on axles", so when I was shopping for an early 60s AS, I just knew I wanted new axles. Had I noticed the brackets were welded on, I may not have jumped on this unit. The inside is camp ready for the most part, and the body is really nice besides a good budding.

Thanks in advance for any options/ideas you may have.

2012 Dodge Ram Laramie Longhorn Limited Mega Cab Diesel 4x4

Top of the line Dodge Ram 2500 Pick-up, the Laramie Longhorn Limited Mega Cab model. In addition to the exhaustive standard features, this 4x4 has the Cummings 6.7 liter diesel, limited slip rear axel, Ram Boxes, totally hands free Alpine entertainment center, premium Navigation and XM/Sirius radio. The attached window sticker lists all the factory installed equipment which brought the price to $63k. To that, the dealer installed a Backflip cargo cover, all weather front and rear rubber floor mats, mud flaps, tailgate assist, bug shield and chrome exhaust tip bringing the list price to nearly $66k. We also purchased a transferable extended warranty. The truck has 20,000 miles on it, hardly broken in. There remains the sooner of 100,000 miles or 64 months on the warranty. We traded a Mercedes M class to purchase this vehicle. The Ram has more safety and convenience items on it including heated and cooled leather seating and a heated steering wheel, perfect for climbing in after hooking up to warm up or cool down. It has an exhaust brake and 4 wheel 15" disc brakes. I stop my 30 Airstream International, truck and trailer fully loaded in tow mode with the exhaust brake feature engaged and only use the brakes for the final rolling stop. With a total gross weight over 16,000 pounds (truck and trailer) I get 13-14 mpg. A very stout and safe tow vehicle.

Traveling with a small generator.

I own a small 2000kw Yamaha generator and would like to bring it with us on the trip.

We are driving down to Florida to pick up the airstream.

Our vehicle is a Toyota sequioa and would like to place the generator in the truck when we travel - but don't want to smell the gas on the way down.

I think I should empty the gas and run the carb dry. But not sure if I should do anything else with it.

Think double bagging the "dry" generator will be enough to keep the odor out of the cab?

My mind is on overload as we ready for our maiden voyage. I'm not even thinking clearly due to prepare overload.

Battery BCI Grp Size: Q for Lewster

Lewster, I've been thinking of increasing my battery box size to accommodate a pair of L-16 (also BCI Grp 903) sized batteries. Not time yet to make other mods for increased battery capacity.

Tongue box mod will be done by a local fabricator / certified welder. This is on a full-frame "vintage kin" SilverStreak. Tow vehicle not a concern with tongue weight increase, and modified box will be beefed up (currently a pair of T-105's).

I'm working from an extant 1989 factory installation (still works; 2-panel "Solar Electric System" brand) and need to make changes to the existing for better performance prior to some day erecting a full scale big solar system.

First things first. I need a welder for some other work and am seeking your opinion about the worthiness of increasing battery size. A lot of work for minimal benefit, or . . ? The batteries need replacing anyway.

Also, in what order -- and what componentry / parts -- should I look to replacing in what order for the future? Any books or online guides you'd recommend? I'm intrigued by the idea of a "hybrid" sytem you mentioned elsewere.

I see that Earth Roamer installs 1.3KW systems on their offroad wonders, so am using that number for initial minimum calculations. This TT is 35' long and I plan to upgrade it to what a family of five or two couples would want. Washer/dryer, dishwasher . . the usual 5'er/moho amenities short of an onboard generator. While I don't expect to run those sort of items via batteries I hope it helps with a picture. Two TV's, surround sound, Wi-Fi, eventually twin A/C and 50A service. Folks today want their eee-lektericity.

So, where to start is One. Two, what references to use to start towards a "big" system. I'd like to not have to do things twice, but prefer a working system as I go along (not a strict requirement as I am in RV parks for the foreseeable future).

Thanks for your consideration of these questions.

Ross

P.S. If anyone has links to a recent "big" solar install done DIY or otherwise I'd be appreciative. I've seen the ones around here, and am hoping to look upon something state-of-the-current-art in one of the bigger TT's, 5'er or conventional, moho or sailboat, or what-have-you.

Thx

overnight areas on interstate 70 East bound from Chicago.

We are headed to Colonial to pick up our new AS and bringing our 2013 22'FB in trade. We have very limited time, unfortunately. As we researched convenient places like KOA in Eastern Indiana and Ohio, we find only 2 night stays on weekends Of course we are traveling through these areas on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We have only 3 days to make it to Colonial and will have to rely upon major highways. Our return will not be much better. Has anyone found a nice reliable, place along this route other than a truck stop or Walmart? Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

New axles and shock Brackets

I just got off the phone with Alyssa at Dexter Axle. She informs me that if I replace my old 23D axles with new 6-5.5 lug pattern, and with 32 degree down arms, that it is not possible for Dexter to supply the axles with a top shock bracket. When I asked "then how do the shocks get mounted?" She merely stated that she had no idea. Bye the way, the rating of the axle does not play in this equation. She quoted 3,500# rated axles, which is what I want. She said that a lower rating would not affect their inability to supply with shock brackets.

I want to go to the 32 degree down arm and LT235/75 R16 Michelin tires to gain "dirt road clearance." This forum gave me tons of info on how to do it, but all of a sudden I am dead in the water. I sure don't want to order axles, 16" Sendel wheels and Michelin tires and then find out that they won't work!

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

2014 Airstream Flying Cloud 25 - Colorado

Title: 2014 Airstream Flying Cloud 25 - Colorado

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

2014 FC 25 RB Purchased March 2014 from Colonial

Full Awning Package

Black Ultra Leather

Convection Microwave

Additional equipment:

Dometic A/C Extended Warranty – I think this is transferrable Exp 3/12/19

Solar System from AMSolar

6 Solar panels – 705 watt total

Magnum 3000 watt Hybrid Inverter/Charger with ME-RC50 Remote (replaced the factory 1000watt) All outlets are on the new inverter, not just the couple from the factory

4 –220ah Lifeline AGM 6v batteries

BlueSky Solar Boost 3014iL controller with IPN Pro Remote

Note: This system will drive the A/C unit. It has the ability to mix Solar Panel output, generator input (small gen like a 1000 or 2000 Honda is perfect) and make up the additional amp requirements by pulling from the batteries. Example on a sunny day the panel put out about 39 DC amps, Eu2000 generator about 100 amps, A/C pulls 166 amps so the batteries supply the balance of 27amps. 200ah power available from full batteries.

Surge-Guard 30amp Hardwired surge Protector with Remote Panel

Voyager WVOS511 Wireless backup camera mounted above back window

TST Wireless TPMS system on four main tires

Airstream Factory added the new style (seeLevel) water/waste tank sensor system while I was back getting misc warranty work completed

Factory just fixed/adjusted items like cabinet door latches, replacement of shower door that didn’t close properly, fixed the black tank flush system.

I have a ProPride hitch which can either be part of the deal or transfer to the new trailer.

There is about a 9" scratch (no dent, just the scratch) in the roadside rear quarter panel. I immediately treaded it with Corrosion-X and clear coated it. Talked to the factory and they said that was the best solution unless the full panel were replaced. This damage was done by my storage company and Good Sam insurance refused to pay for repairs. Long story.

1979 Airstream Argosy 27 - Florida

Title: 1979 Airstream Argosy 27 - Florida

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

The Airstream Argosy was a lighter weight trailer made in the 70's and early 80's. This one is 4070 lbs. Quite light for her size. Argosys are painted, which is fun, different and cheaper than frequently getting the silver ones polished. We named her Pearl. We love her but with our very young children we have not camped like we’d hoped. We are going to try to revive our airstream dream with another one once the kiddos are a little older. Our loss is your gain. :)

We have title in hand. She has new electrical, battery and propane tanks installed by rv dealership. Interior cleaned &amp; painted with Bin primer and Sherwin Williams kitchen &amp; bath (color- Heron Plume). Shower and vanity painted with 2 part tub epoxy paint. New vinyl flooring. New thermal curtains. New mattresses from IKEA. A/c is cold. We have not used the oven or pulled out the awning but were told they work. She needs a new water pump and black water tank (although told toilet works hooked up to sewage); both run around $100. We have not replaced the tires, I feel they are ok for Florida but you’ll want new for a big trip. The bathroom floor has a soft spot and eventually you'll want to repaint the exterior. There is a dent in the back and the back bumper is wonky as pictured. She isnt perfect yet but is on her way. New bedspreads and pillow covers in Duralee fabric. She’s a glamper. We went camping- pulling her was a breeze and we had a great time. You could also turn her into a food truck or shop. It took me 2 years on Craigslist to find one in South Florida. Season is starting! The keys are calling. Grab her while you can! :)

Electrical Gremlin...Help

Have a 2009 28' Flying Cloud. When I hook the power cord to the truck, all lights on the trailer work with the exception of the upper left tail light. I drive a few miles and it starts working.

Suspected the connections at the plug in at the truck. Cleaned up and polished truck and trailer side connections-didn't fix it(but, it made every LED on the trailer about 100% brighter!). I put a jumper wire across the plug on the trailer that makes all lights burn and the upper left tail light works. So, now I'm stumped.

Any electricians out there that can help me run down this problem? Would appreciate the basics/detail/order of checking-I'm not good at diagnosing electrical. I have been told that getting the individual lights out of the aluminum casting on the back of the trailer is very tough-any suggestions in this regard if this is going to be something I'll need to do.

Thanks folks.

Which Satellite TV Antenna for Our FC 27FB

We want to add the Winegard Trav'ler Dish Satellite TV antenna (45 lbs) to our 2014 FC 27FB and the dealer where we purchased the TT says it's too heavy for the roof and recommends the Roadtrip Mission stationary antenna instead. Airstream customer relations says there is no problem putting the Trav'ler on the the roof. Who's right? Are there any other FC 27FB owners who have installed the Trav'ler antenna? If so, where did you place it on the roof? And are there any Mission antenna users who would care to comment on your experience with the antenna and its program choices?

Hello AirForums Community

Hello,

Just wanted to share that we picked up our first Airstream back in July. It's a 1971 Globetrotter (21') that we plan to completely gut and restore/modernize. We are brand new to towing/trailers and have already learned quite a bit from just reading the posts on this forum. Can't wait to contribute and document our restoration adventure.

Soon to be Newbie owner from the Bay Area!

Hello airstream community!

My name is Xavier, I'm a woodworker/metalworker/handyman, approaching 30, located in Oakland, CA.

I'm quite possibly about to embark on the exciting adventure that airstream ownership seems to be!

I have my eye on a 1978 Sovereign, on Craigslist, that seems like a great deal, but then, they always do to me :/

They're asking $10500 for the airstream, plus a '96 Suburban, fully equipped to tow it home (which will be wherever I choose!).

It has a few known issues, but supposedly is in overal good condition. It's all original, with apolstry redone in the 90s. All the appliances/pumps work.

Two immediate questions.

1. The only major known issue is that it has some rear end separation going on. Apparently it only happened recently, and is not too bad... but you can see light from the inside.

How major is the fix for that? I have read about bulletin #29. Has anyone made the reinforcement plates themselves?

I have actually helped with an airstream renovation before, so I have a fairly good idea what the work entails, and will be attempting to do most of it myself.

Second question: Have airstream values gone up much in the last 2 years?

I found a post from Jan 2013 (here) which would answer many of my questions about value if they haven't changed much.

Searching SF Bay Area Craigslist, either prices have gone way up, or people are just crazy.

Valuing the suburban at a conservative $2500, and assuming they'll take slightly less than their asking price, does $7000 seem like an okay price.

Lastly, if there are any members in the Bay Area, especially near Santa Rosa/Navato, I would be extremely appreciative of any assistance in inspecting this old gal.

It's getting late, and I'm probably saying too much/rambling a bit for a first post... so I'll leave it at that.

Thanks!

On/Off main switch

Is there such On/Off Switch that I could add to the main electrical plug to my trailer? The trailer is being used as a guest house and I prefer to have the cable always connected but it would be nice to be able to simply turn it on or off with a switch.

New Interstate Owner

My wife and I purchased a Black/Cream Ultraleather 2013 3500 EXT with 3400 miles last Friday as our first RV. It still had all of the packing in the bath, refrigerator, microwave, etc. It had been owned by a very high ranking NASCAR executive who evidently used it for office duties.

We spent yesterday and today removing stickers, cleaning and familiarizing ourselves with all of the manuals and equipment. Drove it to Sam's yesterday for some driving experience and to my son's house today to take our grandson to dinner to celebrate his 14th birthday.

My father-in-law is 93 and having some health issues in northern Indiana. My son works for a NASCAR related company and cannot get away until after the racing season. We have all been planning on a trip to Indiana around Thanksgiving time. As I expected, my son and his family were all over traveling there in the Interstate. The grandson has already staked out his place on the rear lounge where he will hook up his PlayStation to play games all the way to Indiana from NC.

Looking forward to some shakedown trips in the near future once we figure out what to pack. At our recent 50th class reunion my best friend from those days (and best man at our wedding) invited us to visit him at his house on a mountain overlooking Monterrey Bay. Sometime after the first of the year, we will be headed his way. Our new puppy will become a traveler as well.

61' Ambassador black tank gate valve leaking

I bought a 61' Ambassador in "Almost camping ready" condition.

Today I got the gate valve (Discharge on the black tank)operational, then filled it with water. The tank appears to hold water TOTALLY fine, but there is a stead drip through the gate valve.

I read on other posts that on newer models, the valve can be rebuilt with some type of new seal. Is this true for mine? It appears to be a factory tank, but there is a big access panel, with a means to remove it fairly easy.

It's the valve that has the gray water come out below it, sharing the same connection. There is no gray tank on my trailer.

Any info. on the subject would be GREAT as once this is fixed, it is going into my shop for the winter.

New traveler

Hello,

I'm new to the travel trailer game and I'm trying to research which one will work for me. I want a vintage smaller trailer of aluminum construction, so I'll be asking many questions.

Thanks

Routing Midi to Mobius - FL Studio

So I am trying to use FL studio for live looping using Mobius Looper. In order to get mobius to record the audio output from fl studio, I load it into a mixer channel and then route all the other mixer channels to the channel that mobius is on. However, in order to properly control Mobius in a live looping setting, I need to control it with a midi foot pedal (in my case the Behringer FCB1010). Now here's where my problem arises: when Mobius is in a mixer channel, I don't know how to send midi events (midi note on/off signals) into Mobius. I've tried using the Patcher in FL Studio 11 to route midi events over a specific port number (with the FCB1010 on the same port) into Mobius but none of the midi events are being recognized. Does anyone know what I can do to troubleshoot?

Thanks in advance

Increasing Black Water Tank Size

We are considering buying a 2008 Safari 25 that has an 18 gallon black water tank. Is it possible to install a larger capacity tank?

hello and help please

Hello,

I'm pedro, and I'm trying to make mobius as part of my guitar setup, due to it's flexibility.

However I'm facing a display issue (please see screenshot)

I'm running windows 8.1, 64 bit, and what you see is mobius in a full HD display. With this resolution, there should not be any kind ov overlap, but the font size is just too big.

I've arranged the components on the screen, but still some numbers overlap (counter).

I also edited the ui.xml file (with notepad), but something weird is happening: The text file keeps my changes, but if I double click it, it opens in my internet browser with different values. Also, no matter which values I change, Mobius keeps always looking the same.

Wonder what else can i do to resize mobius screen to a readable size?

thank you

A new chapter for an old dog.

Hi,

Well after many sleepless nights. (gawd I hate realtors) The Dog House is ready for it's first major journey.

The "real" start of our journey with our baby starts here.

My wife took a job in Portland, OR in May and we've been tryin' sell our house since. No luck, but my Job in Wisconsin has run out, and I have opportunities in Portland now, so the movers pick everything up Tuesday, and we'll leave (my father-in-law, Joe and I) Tuesday or Wednesday for the great northwest.

My wife is really upset she can't be going on the first journey.

We are taking the North Dakota - Montana route. Neither Joe or I have been that way, so here we go.

I took the kids for a little warm up while we had an open house today.

I think Jack knows Mama is at the other end. he sat here for 20 minutes this afternoon.

The trailer is just a rolling tent now, so we made a simple bed frame and put in a king size bed for the trip. Jack approved of course (One-Eyed-Jack that is).

A bit of jungle.

more jungle, it's just shorter, hiding behind the bed.

Well it's Sunday evening and I've a shitton to do.

I'll update after we leave.

Todd

Window washer indicator

My washer fluid indicator came on so I filled up the container and the warning light is still on.

Is there something special I need to do to reset part from filling the tank ?

Cheers

Digital Performer as Host

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and new to Mobius. So far, I'm thrilled with its power but I've a question that I can't answer myself.

I''m trying to use Mobius with Digital Performer 8 as a host, and if I run the program in 32-bit mode I can use Mobius as an Audio Unit plugin. So far, so good.

However, in such a scenario I cannot get Mobius' Midi Binding to work. Mobius recognizes a key press in its Midi Capture but when I try to use the binding nothing happens. At this point in testing my setup I'm just sending a Midi note-on event from my keyboard controller that I want to trigger record. It looks good in Config but isn't working in reality. When I press the assigned key nothing happens.

If that isn't clear, let me try again. The audio works but the midi doesn't.

I'm sure hoping someone can help. Help!

any use the General Grabber AT2 tire

I will need tires for the "new" truck some time next year and in looking around at tire i see tires..

One reason was my truck is a 2 wheel drive version of the 2003 ford f-250 SD diesel. I wanted to get a tire that has a good aggressive tread but not a loud on the road noise.

in reading reviews on tirerack http://ift.tt/Yy7ZHO this tire seems ti fill the bill for both.

it has a good weight rating for the LT265/75R16 some 3400 lbs at 80 lbs air pressure.

was hoping some of the airforums may have them as well..

TV outlet not working.

My TV outlet is not working in my 25ft 2007 Safari. I've had no problems before with this outlet in the overhead cupboard for the TV. I've checked the fuse and it's ok. The TV works in other outlets so I know the TV is ok.

Sorry I'm a bit naive on the electrical stuff so wondering what else I can try?

Third Brake Light Lens 1994 Land Yacht

Just bought a 1994 Land Yacht. She's been neglected so I'm fixing things up. I'm having trouble finding a replacement lense for the third brake light. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

Got to Replace my 2009 Barker Superjack

I did a dumb thing today and forgot to put the hitch pin the the Equalizer receiver head shank and as I was slowly exiting the neighborhood street the Equlizer head pulled out. The trailer came down on the Equalizer head and the tongue jack shaft above the A frame contacted the Tundra bumper and the bent the shaft and broke the gear box housing. So I need a new electric jack.

The clearance between the original Barker jack and the propane tank cover is minimal. The propane cover just touched the Barker. The Barker I have has the motor parallel to the propane cover. There is a light that shines on the hitch so it seems this is the way its supposed to be mounted The newer Airstreams seem to have a jack with the motor mounted forward but there seems to be too much housing sticking out behind the shaft that will prevent the use of my propane cover. Airstream must have moved the propane tanks back a couple of inches on newer models. I can't see how I can use the current model of Barker jack plus they have white heads. I'd like to find one that has the Airstream gray but I'm willing to paint the housing if necessary.

Has anyone replaced a 2008 or similar jack and can you post any photos showing the install?

Kelvin

Oops! Left the Hitch Pin Out

Luckily I was going slow after making a turn from an adjacent street the Equalizer receiver came out of the Tundra receiver. I forgot to put the pin in it. Luckily the Equalizer head was able to withstand the impact and kept the trailer off the ground. The electric hitch jack got bent as it hit my Tundra's bumper so it will have to replaced. The aluminum propane cover has some scratches from the electric hitch jack. The aluminum propane tanks show no dents. I was able to lift the trailer barely high enough with the Tundra's tire jack and a with a passerby helping to stand on the Tundra bumper. The Tundra bumper has a shallow dent and it cleaned up with no scratches. I was only a couple of blocks from the house and I took the trailer back there to conduct repairs. All I need is an electric jack.

Somehow I got side tracked during the hitch up procedure. I've been towing only since 2010 but never remember myself catching myself not putting int the pin. I'm thankful there I escaped major damage.

Kelvin.

Gray Tank?

Has anyone added a gray water tank to an early Argosy that didn't cone with one?

Truck Cap/Topper in N.E. Ohio for Ram

Not sure where to post this but hopefully this is the place :

Spent a couple of hours searching for a truck cap with no luck. ANyone know of a place in N.E. Ohio where I can get a decent price on a truck cap new or used? Need a white cap for a long bed on my 2014 Ram 2500.

Clearance between trailer and TV

I'm planning on purchasing a Classic and want to decide on the tow vehicle (pick up truck). Is there enough clearance so that I could leave the tailgate down in order transport longer items? Any advice you can give is appreciated.

12V Short is killing me!!!!

1976 Argosy 26'

Out of the blue, just sitting there, branch #3 fuse blew. I measure a short from branch #3 to ground. Going through every single thing using 12v on that circuit I find nothing.

Anybody have a similar experience?:bb:

Spare Tire

I am a newbie 2007 20-foot Sarari owner. Reading "The Newbies Guide to Airstreaming" I realized for the first time that the trailer came without a mounted spare tire, which is pretty incredible to me in view of the forethought that Airstream seems to apply in every other aspect of their trailers. From other threads it seems that my two choices are to buy a spare wheel and tire and throw it in the back of my tow vehicle, which I certainly can do, or do a retrofit add-on of a rack under the trailer somewhere, which I find pretty annoying after spending what even used Airstreams cost. A retrofit mount on the tongue, above the battery box and between the propane tanks box and the trailer cab seems a better solution than mounting under the trailer. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Input requested - Ideal restoration target (year(s), model(s), Length

Good afternoon -

I am a brand new forum member, and have coveted and dreamed of restoring a vintage Airstream for many, many years.

I am finally at the point in life where I can get more serious about beginning my search for a restoration candidate, and would welcome any and all input with regards to the ideal age range, model, and trailer length.

A little bit about me... I am late 40's, married with a very active and supportive wife, and we have seven (7) kids, with all but two out of the house. We are likely going to have many, many grandchildren. I would say that I am very handy, good with my hands, and have been a woodworker for many years with my own well-equipped shop.

I seem to be drawn to the 60's era trailers, and would ideally like to find one of the larger sized floor plans that would accommodate more 'sleepers'. My hope is that the members here can help direct me to a particular year or two, and model or two, where historical failures seem to be lower, and where replacement parts are more readily available. In fact, any advice about specific years and models to stay away from would be welcomed as well.

I look forward to hearing your collective thoughts. Thanks in advance for you input and advice.

Report on work by ReliableRV in Springfield, MO and the great MN Bear Hunt

As many of you know, my baby was side swiped by a truck in July. It took out the water heater, and scarfed up both side panels and the rear panels.

I called the factory, they were booked thru October. I had a trip to Minnesota planned in Setember, and wanted it repaired by then.

The factory service mgr suggested I take it to ReliableRV in Springfield. I called them and John Steuber said to bring it down and he would start on it as soon as the parts came in.

Several forum members asked for a report on the work that ReliableRV did, so here it is.

It took a week for them to get all the parts identified and ordered. Then I took it down to them. It took a week and a half to do the work.

They replaced both the lower panel and the upper one with the windows, all the way to the front end cap, and the two rear panels, as well as the water heater.

The rivetting is flawless. It looks as good as the factory work. The whole side of the trailer looks new again. The rear end cap looks new again.

They put on a new polished belt all the way around from one side of the door to the other side of the door. I got new emblems, letters, and pinstriping. I got a brand new water heater. The windows fit perfectly. They put on all new window latches, shade strings, and the little plastic things you attach the strings to.

(BTW, the inside of my trailor is as clean as when I took it to them. No mess, no dirty footprints on the carpet.)

They washed the trailor, cleaned all the windows, and polished the wheels.

They put on a new set on 10 ply Maxxis tires and a TPM system with booster. (Those were not covered by insurance, but I needed them, anyway.)

I have to say, I am thrilled with their work. I reccomend them to any of you.

I did find one small problem on my trip to Minnesota. I have a small water leak in the box where you hook up to city water. If the water pump is left on, it cycles every minute or so and water leaks out the seam below the fresh water and tank sprayer hook ups, which is under and behind the water heater. I will call John this week and tell him about it. It wasn't a big problem on the trip, as we were camping off the grid. I just turned the pump off after I used it and all went well.

As for the Great Minnesota Bear Hunt, I went up with my oldest daughter, her husband, and 6 of their friends. I did not hunt. I went along strictly as an advisor. ( Basically I went along to sit by the camp fire, smoke cigars, drink good single malt, and tell lies.)

In the end it's all about bragging rights, and my little girl kicked ass. for the second GMBH she killed the only bear. That's my girl, chip off the old block. :D

Third Brake Light Lense 1994 Land Yacht

Just bought a 1994 Land Yacht. She's been neglected so I'm fixing things up. I'm having trouble finding a replacement lense for the third brake light. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

48 Liner Exterior Lights

Could someone clarify as to what lights are supposed to be on the back of a 48 Liner?

I can not seem to find any pictures of a 100% original one and i am trying to find out, if the liner had just one single tail light or two ?

i have seen some pictures with a single light in center and additional rear side lights, which appeared to be Yankee Turn signal Lights.

i know on the sides i have only the orange globe marker lights fwd and the red globe lights aft, not front lights.

Also where would i find a single light and any other ones ,if this is what has been used? Like to find an original one though.

Heat for one or two cold nights...

On the last few nights of a trip from florida to NJ, there may be some chill. We purchased an Airstream that had the furnace removed from it and only has the AC strip heater.

We expect to have full hook ups everywhere, but just want to be prepared in case we don't. I'll have a 2,000 kw generator with us. I'll also have 60lbs of propane on board.

There will be 5 of us inside a 28' vintage airstream, I'm not sure how well insulated it is.

Should I pick up one of the catalytic heaters, or should I stay electric?
