I need to replace some of the screen and the seal material around the window in my AS. Is this something I can get at Home Depot or Lowes? Or do I need to get it from an RV supplier?

First-time 27FB owner in Houston

I picked up our new 27FB Twin from Foley in Gulfport, MS last week. Here I am taking a break between Baton Rouge and Lafayette:

(I always wanted to see where that exit in the middle of that 30 mile long bridge went.)

This is our first travel trailer and we plan to take a couple of practice trips before going to Yellowstone in August. Our daughter is a freshman at UT Austin and chose the destination, so we get to spend some extra time with her!

Solar, Inverter and Battery upgrades

I recently completed some some upgrades the the house electrical system on my 2012 EXT. The main issue that I was trying to address was a lack of battery power after minimal use and after storage indoors (unplugged) for 30 days or so.

Via this forum and a few people who were generous with their advice and patience, I was able to complete the effort in 2 stages.

The first stage was to replace the original house batteries with LifeLine batteries. I bought 2 GPL-4CT 6 Volt batteries from Mark @ Centex (512.308.9002 Official Lifeline and Sun Xtender Battery Dealer Distributor). They provide me with 220 amp hours of power; about a 30% increase over my original batteries if I recall correctly. I was hoping to go with the larger 6CTs, but there is no way they would fit in my battery box. I basically had the shoehorn the 4CTs in. Mark provided great support and helped me gain a good understanding of battery life and recharging and helped me get all of my inverter and solar charger settings correct.

For the the second phase of the upgrade, I installed a 1000 watt Magnum inverter, 3 100 watt solar panels and the solar charger/remote to go along with them. The Magnum inverter was model MMS1012. The solar charger and remote were Blue Sky models. The Solar Controller is a Solar Boost 2512i(X)-HV along with an IPN ProRemote. I purchased everything from Dave at AM Solar. Welcome to AM Solar_Your RV Solar Specialists since 1987. (541) 726-1091. AM Solar sells the panels with an option to get them as a kit. The kit contains all of the parts you need to install the panels and controllers (wiring, heat shrink, mounting hardware, etc), along with detailed instructions. You just need to figure out where to mount everything and how/where to run all of the wiring. Dave and AM Solar team were very helpful when I called in a few times to ask for assistance. I have to say that when I received the shipments from them I was a bit overwhelmed at first; there were lots of parts and lots of wire. My total cost for all of the parts was $3461.

The most helpful of all with Lewster from this forum (Lew Farber). Talking things thru with him beforehand gave me the confidence that I could tackle this upgrade. A call or two during the install helped keep me on track.

I just returned from a quick trip and could not be more happy. We had the refrigerator on, watched a movie at night and had the furnace on as well as some lights. My battery was at 84% in the AM, much better than my previous batteries that would have been somewhere around 50%. Even better tho was that they were 100% charged with a few hours of morning sun. During the day now, I can run the inverter, the refrigerator and my communication amps (Internet and cell phone) and still sit at 100% power when it is sunny (which is most of the time in California)

The Phase 1 battery exchange took a solid day to do.

The Phase 2 inverter and solar upgrades took me just shy of 5 days.

I could of shaved off a day if it weren't for the battery box and TV antenna. The battery box is wedged in tight between the lounge framework and side of the van. It took a long time to get wires disconnected/reconnected there, as well as working around that area to run new wires. If doing it over, I would eliminate the battery box (and go with the larger battery size). The TV antenna was securely mounted and I fought its removal for awhile before I went commando on it and destructively removed it. What ever Airstream uses for sealant is very durable...

It also took a bit of time to figure out my existing wiring. I had a factory installed solar system (50 watt) that had to be removed. I had wiring that went to the Battery Isolation Manager that wasn't supposed to be there and I was leery about taking it away, as the new system does not hook up to it (not directly at least).

Running all the wiring is tedious, but not too bad. The worse area was getting the wiring in from the roof penetration and fished behind to the 'control center' in the upper bulkhead.

Lessons Learned and General Thoughts
- Patience is a virtue; especially when trying to fish all of the wires thru the various areas
- Have a box of band aids available. Every finger, as well as the back of both of my hands, bled at some point during the install. There are sharp corners, wires, etc in all of those blind spots where you are poking your hands and fishing wiring
- A saying we have at work is very applicable here. 'Plan the work and work the plan'. In other words, think thru the work that you are going to doing and line up everything that you need to perform it (tools, ladder, drawings parts, etc). Then do the work that you had planned. I'm a little OCD and would sometimes get distracted by other things that I found would need addressed
- Safety. It goes without saying that there are some 'dangers' involved. The AC/DC voltages and amps are sufficient to mess you up a bit, as well as do some damage to your rigs components. Make sure you disconnect everything and ensure nothing is energized prior to sticking a wreck on the electrical connections. Roof access isn't bad, but respect the height. It's tight up on the roof now with 3 panels, AC, vents, etc. Don't do foolish things to get on or off the roof.
- In the end, I'd give myself a B+ for the finished product. I would have liked to have gotten the wire runs under the lounge better organized. If I had to do it again, it would redo all of the existing wiring. The AS run wires were quite messy. I did my best to clean them up, but could only do so much. The good thing is that the wiring is all hidden.
- Enjoy it! Overall, it was a very fun project. I learned a lot and feel proud of my accomplishment. There were a few times I got frustrated. Don't let it bother you. Simply step away for a bit and doing something else.

Overall it was a great project with a high rate of return for me. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate it a 5 for overall difficultly. '1' being a fuse changeout. '10’ being an engine rebuild. Nothing was that difficult; its just more of the effort required to run all of the wiring.

Attached are a few pictures. I don't have one of the roof, however it is the same that others have posted. 2 panels in the rear running parallel to the sides of the van (in place of the TV antenna), and 1 running perpendicular in front of the AC (where the old panel was). Also attached a a wiring diagram of the some of the associated components in the 2012 electrical system that may be useful to some.

Thanks again for all who post to this forum and are generous with their time, advice and opinions.

Ram Eco diesal vs. F-150 3.5 Eco-boost

I have been looking at the Ram Eco for sometime and like what I see so far. I looked at F-150s but spent time on the V-8. I now see that the big 6 tows more and also has good reviews. I am reading the negatives on both. The Eco seems to be having more than normal problems with the engine. The Ford as I read reports does not get anywhere near the mileage Ford says it does. One report says 8 MPG when towing a 6k pound trailer. Don't want to make a mistake. Will be towing about 7k pounds.

Repair after a blowout

Blow out on left side - (single axle) did not take out the wiring or the gas line, but I would like to repair the pan to keep mud & critters from getting into the space between the pan & the flooring...Any suggestions other than an RV dealer?

IOTA Converter Trips Breaker; Not Sure Where to Start

Hi folks,

I recently bought a `78 Argosy 30. There are a couple of significant issues that I'm working through with the first being the battery converter.

The previous owner replaced the system, using an IOTA DLS-55. While doing it, they ran a separate 30amp out the back.

The trouble is, I can't plug the converter directly into the 120v system within the Airstream. It flips the breaker immediately, and I can't figure out the order in which to troubleshoot this. Now, I have to keep switching the two plugs, which drains the battery 100%, and has now resulted in a nearly dead battery.

I'm not sure where to start with this one. I'm trying to tackle this logically, troubleshooting one component at a time, but I'm not sure where to start on.

The only other issues with the electrical are: the hot water heater (not original) blows a fuse when I try and use the electric power (works fine on LP); the fridge flips the breaker immediately when on electric (works fine on LP).

Any suggestions or suggestions on first troubleshooting steps? Thanks!

34' or ???

We're discussing the possibility of going with an Airstream instead of our Foretravel, and the recent post on an older thread (34' vs 30' or 32') raised some questions. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to answer some of our questions. I'll be in the chat room again this evening after supper, should some of you wish to get a discussion going there.

1. I didn't know that Airstream HAD a 32' coach. What years was that available?
2. I've seen places where one coach is called a 30' and another one, with a slightly different floor plan, is called a 31' but the specs show that they are, in fact, exactly the same length. How often is this the case?
3. I've read a few comments about the tire scrubbing with the triple axle 34' coaches. How much of an issue is that in real life? I realize that some people get into tighter places than others, and that will make a difference, but I'd like to hear from a couple of people who have actually had 34' coaches and can give first-hand reports.

To provide some perspective, we're full-timers currently in a 40' MH with no slides. We understand that even a 34' Airstream will be somewhat smaller than what we have, and we're okay with that. A 30' coach will be quite a bit smaller, though, and that may be an issue.

As I said, I'll be in the chat room after I finish the dishes.

SF Curbed: Couple who traded condo for AS

Airstream recently tweeted and Facebooked an interesting article about a couple who traded their condo for an Airstream. We loved the article, but a key question remains: Who did they use for their interior mods? They look really great!

If you know, please do tell, as we'd like to look into doing the same thing to the living area in Rocinante.

Thanks!

Battery Converter Flips Breaker

Hi folks! I apologize for starting this fairly broad, but I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting.

I picked up `78 Argosy 30 a few months ago. It's been a great temporary home while my wife and I build a house, but there is this one little problem that's bugging me (well, one main one).

The previous owner replaced the inverter with an IOTA DLS-55 and put in a new battery. They also ran another hookup out the back that is used exclusively for the inverter (the inverter is plugged directly to this extension).

If I plug the inverter directly into the 120v outlets in the Argosy, it immediately flips the breaker. Separately, the 120 hookup works fine and the inverter hookup works fine, but I cant get them workin right together.

Where should I go first to troubleshoot? I'm comfortable working with electricity, but I've never tackled a 12v + 120v system like is in an RV. Should I unplug everything non-essential (water heater, fridge, outlets if possible) and work my way back in?

If it's important, the water heater (not original) wont work on electric either -- it blows a fuse in the 12v fuse box. The refrigerator throws the breaker as well, and I've already unhooked that to no effect.

Thanks!

Need a Tow Vehicle for a 27FB Flying Cloud

I am purchasing a 2009 Flying Cloud 27FB. I am planning on purchasing a vehicle to tow this trailer.

I need suggestions on the size of pick up needed to tow this trailer. I am new to the airstream world. My wife and I used to own a pop-up when are kids were little. When they became teenagers camping seemed to take a back seat to their activities so we sold our pop-up. The kids are grown now and I'm retired. My wife will retire in a year or so and we are looking to travel and see America.

I purposely decided to buy the trailer first and the tow vehicle 2nd.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chuck

Hail Damage question

I've seen a bunch of hail damage photos of vintage Airstreams on various forums. My wife & I have a newer Airstream (2015 Flying Cloud).

Does anyone know if newer Airstreams are anymore hail-damage resistant than earlier vintage models? They appear to be made of different type aluminum (non-shiny).

I live in Colorado which is a hail risk every Spring!

Changing surface mount hinge to euro-style

Airstream cabinet experts,
Has anybody changed out the traditional style surface mount old school hinges found on the Classics to the new Euro-Style hidden hinges? We just bought an '07 25' Classic Limited with the hickory interior. I would love to change out all the hinges and door/drawer hardware to something more exciting. Your thoughts and ideas would be appreciated!

Surge Protector Levitron

One of the frustrating decisions which must be made for a newbie to the RV'ing world is surge protection devices.

RV parks are notorious for renegade electrical service and the RV stores all sell Surge Protectors to plug into the CG pedestal, then accept the power-cord from the RV. These are expensive, in the several hundred dollar range for the better ones, and the cheaper ones are $100 or so and do not provide any meaningful indications they are doing their jobs.

Plus, they are susceptible to theft while the owner is away from the coach.

The hard-wired, installed units are better from the theft side of things, but they still cost hundred$.

I have an electrical engineer BIL who assured me that the better solution is to use a "whole house" surge protector intended for the residence. A company which makes it is a well known U.S. company ...LEVITON.

I bought this unit at Home Depot for $50.

51110-SRG > Surge Protection > Power & Surge Protection > Connected Home > Products from Leviton Electrical and Electronic Products

It's easy to install. It can be installed anywhere you can access the input power cord to your converter. It protects against much larger surge-jolts than typical RV types. It has four leads.
One goes to neutral, one goes to ground, one goes to a 120 volt leg, and the last goes to another 120 volt leg. (Being made for the residential market, it presumes 240 volt service entrance. The typical RV only uses ONE of the circuits...which gives you a FREE SPARE should the unit ever fail.)

There are two indicator lamps which show the unit is working, and if extinguished, that the unit has failed. (You can now use the other lead.)
Be certain to insulate the unused lead.

Best of all.... it carries equipment loss insurance for any onboard equipment damaged by surges the unit did not catch (up to $5,000 worth.)

And the thieves will have to steal the entire trailer to get it, which will be covered by your RV insurance!

What a deal!

Can water heater fill from fresh water tank?

We are about to take the maiden cruise with our 2015 Flying Cloud. I know the water heater fills when hooked to city water system. But does it also fill from the fresh water tank when boondocking?

Sewer Hose Adapter Size Problem

Hey guys, Been a longtime since I have been to the boards. (Technically, I suppose that is a good thing cause it means no problems) Anyway, I had an issue with my sewer hose adapter which is the original Thetford hose to my 1976 Argosy. I twisted on the adapter and crack! One of the 2 prongs that hold it secure snapped off. I went to the RV store and grabbed a new one but iwas just a hair too small (maybe by a millimeter or so) So then I did some research online and ordered this:

SmartDrain Sewer System

I got a great deal on it (half price) so when it arrived I was pumped. But guess what it was also shy by about a millimeter. Anyone have the story here? Did my pipes expand over time? Did they change the size? Does this have something to do with Valterra? I am at a loss...

Thanks for any and all help!

7 pole connector

I am new to the forum and just purchased a 2006 Bambi using a Mercedes 350 SL 4 matic as TV. I connected the 7 pole connector and did not have brake or turning signals. From Duo to Solo

I don't know why I found what I am about to post so difficult, but today I finally am able to do it.

I lost my best friend and #1 fan of 25 yrs two and a half yrs ago.

I am now a solo streamer. I still am looking forward to the fting life , although it is and will be very different.

I am happy we got our AS and had many enjoyable times together. I'll always have those memories to cherish.

I haven't pulled the AS out of storage for a while. I spent my home time with family instead, but next time home I plan on hooking her up and going somewhere to enjoy my rolling condo again.

Storage with Dangling Sway Control Hitch

Hello! My wife and I are new Airstream owners with a 2015 Flying Cloud 25FB. We have one of those sway control hitches (as pictured below). I've seen some people who remove the entire hitch from their tow vehicle & leave the ball connected to and hanging from their trailer tongue when they store their trailer.

My question is: Is that safe for the trailer tongue? Does that damage or wear anything out over time? These hitches are pretty heavy!

I would appreciate this forum's expert advice! Thanks!

Free AC unit from '69 Sovereign

I posted this last year and got one or two questions but no takers. I do not know if the unit is blown or not, I replaced it when it did not seem to cool properly, maybe a "brownout". It and it's cover are free for you to pick up in the Midwest. I live in a suburb of Kansas City on the Kansas side. No shipping.

We have twin beds that need a topper. I know I have read a thread in the pass of recommendations.

Anyone know which one it is?

Thanks!

PO hole in side

The PO had cable running through a hole he drilled thru ext skin and int skin...just near a window. I have just put a small piece of metal tape over it for now, but how/ or can that be patched?

Replacing interior skin

Have not started yet, just trying to get info for when I get to that part. I "plan" on gutting my 67 Sovereign 30', (maybe even shell off), but I want to put in all new aluminum int skin...the tricky part is the end caps? Are there diagrams or form measurements for cutting the aluminum for these areas....please forgive my ignorance if I don't call something by its proper name, newbie to Airstream world. I have seen some beautiful jobs done with copper even, and it looks as if that area would be cut into several narrow strips for that area.

State named Trailers?

I've noticed a couple of trailers with state names on both sides and rear of trailers. Does anyone know if this was a factory install? I sit some type of package? Both trailers are 77's. I have an Alaska and Wyoming trailer pictures.

Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road...

Having traveled enough since having a Drivers Permit... many things can end up in the "middle of the road". Some parts of the country have specific organic or inorganic items to be found.

Organic:
- Skunks. They seem to be from Sea Level to 6,300 feet elevation here in Colorado. They smell differently in Missouri than they do here in the Front Range of Colorado. No matter the scent... they make themselves known, although not usually seen. Road kill Skunk in the middle of the road is something to avoid, when possible. You will suffer for some time until the scent just "wears itself out". Curious dogs will get a "nose full" and a variety of recommended techniques to remedy the stench.

- Armadillos. Somehow when driving from Kansas City, Missouri to the Arkansas border there is one thing you will notice. Road kill Opossum and Skunk become Armadillo. You know you are close to Arkansas. Once in Texas, they must outnumber skunk and opossum. My mother in law, a retired school teach from New York, was driving with us to Arkansas to dig Quartz Crystals in the Hot Springs area. I pointed out an Armadillo laying along side the road. She told me they were a "turtle" of some kind. I tried to reason with her, but let the career teacher have her way. Turtle... OK. Just a turtle with a bit of hair.

- Moose, Elk, Deer, Antelope, Cattle, Horse, Sheep, Raccoons, Opossums, Rabbits, Jackalopes, Birds, Snakes... each area of the country has specific road kills. The higher the elevation, the LARGER THE ROAD KILL.

- Porcupine. Our Blue Heelers wanted to smell one years ago. I learned how to pluck them from their snouts. Some look like small raccoons and others look like a walking bush. Occasionally I will see a bush sized porcupine alongside the road. They have little fear of... anything. Our Blue Heelers, still are curious about Skunks, but hopefully, resist the temptation for "porkies".

- Insects in those humid areas with lakes, ponds, streams, irrigation. Miller Moths, if I can call them Miller, adhere to the windows as well as grasshoppers. I actually put behind my front grill a screen door screen to catch the "bug kill" so they do not clutter the radiator venting. Then, the screen is brushed off to remove the collection of beetles (not Beatles), butterflies, grass hoppers, butterflies and other flying insects.

Now, do not get me wrong. I am not promoting road kill. I actually avoid road kill as I am looking for the deer who hesitat alongside the road... to chose to cross exactly when you are coming near. I have a record of getting a bird now and then, but surely not by want or desire.

A horse/auto/trailer collision is not pretty. A deer/auto collision can be no better, and some deer will jump before being hit and come through your windshield. Big Horn sheep may be grazing along the highway grass with any salt remaining from salting the highway during the previous snow. Prairie Dogs are particularly not the brightest when deciding when and which direction to run when you approach. Add to that chipmunks that must take lessons from the Prairie Dog.

Jackalopes. Larger than a Jack Rabbit you have the Wyoming Jackalope. Once above 4,500 feet elevation these shy members of the rabbit family are out after sunset. Many flat tires have resulted from their sharp tipped antler. When I was 17 years old, I hit one outside of Douglas, Wyoming and paid $35 to have it mounted, a two pointer. (For those of you from the East, two pointed antler on EACH side, not a FOUR POINTer.) Just an East and West difference in counting. Avoid them like a deer. I still have the mount within ten feet of me. Not much farther away than my 1934 Gillette, Wyoming Bison head mount to go with my Indian Artifacts. The Bison was from a fund raiser in 1934 when many were roaming some ranches in Wyoming and taking down fence like they were made from strings.

Maybe you have experiences to add to this morbid fact of traveling.

Areas where deer are common you can find "deer whistles" that you attach to the front of your vehicle. I have never tried one... as it might even attract a buck with a large rack to see me as a competitor to his harem. Maybe they work. Looks like a piece of plastic that someone made a million dollars coming up with the idea.

So... what have you to say? What is YOUR local observation?

All I have to say. A living or dead skunk can haunt you for some time. I was reminded of a song on a 78 RPM record called "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road" that I had on an antique Wurlitzer jukebox years ago. Still true today.

Uh-oh! NOT lining up...

Was hoping to get the shell back on my AS this weekend, set it back down on the new deck yesterday, and it won't line up with the front alignment plate. The door frame is also not sitting down properly, the door is hanging up on the lower frame. So some background, and maybe you older and wiser heads can help me come up with a solution.

I needed to replace a fair number of outriggers, fabricated my own and installed them so they were in the same plane from side to side. Made new support/spacer boards for the dropped cross-members, installed new 3/4" marine plywood for the deck, and had the frame securely jacked and leveled before dropping the shell. I truly expected it to settle right in and be happy, and for the most part, it did. But the front of the shell is sitting approx. 3/16" LOW at the alignment plate, and I'm not sure exactly what's going on with the door, other than that it's sitting high on the opening side .

From the door back on the curb side, everything lines up perfectly. Same for the road side, the entire straight section is good all the way to the back.

I've checked and double checked my alignment, level, and fit at the curves, and I've also checked and double checked that I don't have anything binding or hanging up anywhere. Needless to say, this was a big disappointment, and more than a little frustrating. As those who've done this know, I've got a lot of time and effort involved in getting to this point, and I'd gotten my little sister to make the 200 mile drive to come help, so I'd have a second pair of hands to handle the bucking bar. I'm eager to hear ANY suggestions, and I will NOT be insulted by anything, no matter how trivial. I just want to get my trailer back together and ready to face the next 40 years :D. Thanks, folks.

LPG Line Questions

I'm a total newbie so please forgive me if this is too basic a question.

We recently purchased a 1960 Safari and it has it's original range, refrigerator and hot water heater. It also has an older replacement space heater furnace.

I don't know if any of it works and I purchased the trailer assuming it would need work. I'd definitely like to re-use the oven / range and fridge for sure.

I plan on updating the plumbing and replacing the water heater. However, before I can figure that part out I want to first understand the LPG lines.

The LPG lines on my trailer run outside the belly pan on the street side. There's a T- to go up into the trailer for the furnace, then a T up for the range, then a T- to the curbside for the refer, and then the line continues past (and under) the axle until it goes up and into the water heater.

First question... Should these lines be outside the belly pan or inside? The line under the axle has been crushed by what I assume was a misplaced jack.

Second question... the line is held to the belly pan by aluminum strips riveted in place. In some places the aluminum has corroded and will need to be replaced. Is there a better fastening system? I've read about running the lines inside a PEX tube to protect from rocks, etc. I guess that would eliminate the dissimilar metal corrosion too.

Third question... could (should) I run a single line into the trailer under the range and then T off from inside the trailer to feed the hot water heater and furnace? Is it better (or okay) to run the LPG lines inside the trailer like plumbing the lines? Seems to me like that would be more prudent than running under the trailer where the lines could be damaged. I'd still have to get from street side to curbside for the refrigerator though.

1980 Caravelle 20'

HI!

We are new here and we just purchased a 1980 Caravelle 20'! First of all, we need a service and owners manual and we are finding it extremely hard to find one on this particular model.

We also have several questions on the best mode of action to take when we go to 'renovate' or 'repurpose' some of the items in the stream. We want to keep with the era of the Caravelle but we are also feeling that the 1980's was the year they went cheap with all of the vinyl and plastic so we are torn!

Any direction or information/advice on where to find a manual and how to keep the Caravelle's value for this rare model would be appreciated. Thanks much.

Ben's '78 Argosy thread

Hey everyone. I thought I'd start a thread on my argosy refurb to post everything in one location. I appreciate the warm welcome from this group. Thanks so much.

The old girl passed TX safety inspection over the weekend. While not a terribly daunting task to make sure your brakes/blinkers work.. it does mean I can now transfer the out of state title and pay taxes on the purchase. And.. get a clean TX title in my name. That is a big deal. Thanks to the PO for keeping up the motorhome to a pretty solid mechanical level! The wife and I were ecstatic to cross this hurdle. Heading out the the DMV today to get some new plates.

Question: Anyone know the best source for new side and rear window seals? Ours are completely toast. Crusty and dry rotted to the point the windows jostle around over every bump. I can probably use the shop vac to suck them out they're so broken. Thanks.
Will get some pictures up this weekend when I dive into the brakes.

Ben

Bubble 322

Newbie here from the UK! South coast near Portsmouth for those interested!! Took the plunge and sourced Bubble 322 from Mark the Airstream Guy. Was pricy as a project but in general an ok trailer. Have replaced the floor and converted to UK spec brakes etc and tows well.
Now onto all the little bits. Aspiration is for a very lightweight, flexible space Minimal interior and no electricals or shower/toilet at this stage.

Anyone point me in the direction of getting the step back in working order? Original but can't keep it in the up (away under) position?

Trunk bike carrier

dimanche 26 avril 2015

I have a new 16' Bambi Sport with a Husky Centerline WD and Sway control setup pulled by a 2015 Toyota Highlander XLE. As you know, the Bambi Sport has no back number, so putting a bike rack on the back is not an option. However, I was wondering if using a trunk type bike rack (Yakima KingJoe Pro) on the back of the Highlander while pulling the airstream will cause problems. I am thinking specifically of issues with turning, limiting the turning radius, especially when backing up.

Floor, frame and road worthiness

Well - I sure wish I had read through this forum BEFORE I bought an Airstream.

All told, the previous owners of the 73 safari I recently purchased where methodic in their hunting down of leaks, and for the most part the floor and frame look good (where I can see them). My Dad and his brother restored a 59 greyhound bus for our childhood trips, so I knew of the potential to find badness, but didn't know enough about how to look for it UNTIL I bought one.

I paid CAD $7500 after negotiation (about $6200 USD), will attach some pics here. Fridge replaced (~10 years old and much larger than the stock version), wiring had been redone, hot water heater ~5 years old, and everything seems to work. It had been really well cared for by 3 generations of the same family. After seeing some of the prices paid here - it may well remain that I overpaid, but it took some work to get to where I did.

My use case is two fold: a 3 season spare bedroom given our present cramped house, and realistically, my camping use case is short little hauls to the mountains - no trans continental rides or anything. Will do the axels / brakes / tires before any trips.

I'm planning on removing the belly pan sometime in the next couple of weeks. My question is: how much rot is too much for road safety / structural stability? Are some areas of the frame more important than others for the monocoque? Is there a limit for linear feet of soft-to-probe subfloor?

In inspecting it - the worst rot seems to be in the bathroom closet - extends to about 3-4" along the curb side wall. There is some rot under the shower seat that can be seen as well. I'm sure there's some under the toilet, which I haven't lifted. The front has some rot but is not as bad - limited to 1-2", but at various points under windows it does get soft directly under the shell (poking with a scratch-all).

I didn't know enough about outriggers to identify the cause of the vertical slit on the curb side belly wrap (directly in front of the wheels). But in looking at the outrigger - the weld seems good - it might just be bent (pictured with the spray foam insulation, which the PO were using to plug up any holes to prevent rodent ingress). I don't see other outriggers forcing the belly wrap outwards (but there isn't much distension of this one either). The ones under the stairs still seem solid.

Within the limits of the belly pan on inspection, the frame looks pretty good. The worst it seems to get is the exposed extension to the bumper compartment, where there's a couple of holes.

I don't see any frame separation when I step on the bumper. I'm not jumping on it, in part because I don't want to know, I suppose.

I guess the question I'm trying to assess is folks general risk tolerance for frame issues and some degree of floor rot in assessing road readiness. I realize the pan has to come off to be more fully assessed than what I've done here.

As I realize - I've made the mistake of many here: assuming I could pick this up and be well on my way short little trips with the kid (soon to be kids), with something that is otherwise a piece of art that serves as a spare bedroom as well. You would think that 59 Greyhound would have taught me something - or perhaps sons are fated to repeat the mistakes of their fathers :). Something about rivets gets us pretty fired up I guess.

(sorry about the hasty, malrotated, and generally lousy photography).

1967 Globetrotter - What connection is this?

Hey folks,
I am a total newb with Airstreams, and having restored vehicles, I realize how valuable this site is. I have used the search forum extensively and still cannot figure out what type of plug this airstream needs to plug into the wall.

I went to a few dealerships today and they had no idea what I was talking about. It is a three prong...all flat and says

120V-35A Heavy Duty Connector - The Bargman, Detroit Michigan

This is a pic. Any help would be appreciated. I have seen other 35A connectors but none will fit this.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, just trying to buy one online, and dont want to buy the wrong thing.

Side compartment door screws.

'89 25' Excella,
Side compartment doors have rivets all the way around except at the bottom, there are eleven philips screws across the bottom of each door, left and right.
Is there some reason for the screws instead of rivets? These screws are not sealed in any way, should they be? The screw heads stick out further than rivet heads and interfere with the rub rail.
I have just replaced the floor from the wheel wells back due to floor rot and I am now replacing rivets around the C-chanell and rub rail.

Locking Battery Box 2015 FC

I recently ordered a 2015/16 FC 25' with the factory Solar Panel option. Reading up in what this all entails I noticed Airstream also includes Lifeline GLP-24 AGM batteries in this option. I looked up what they cost on Amazon. Oh my gosh about $350/ea!!

I am pretty sure the battery box does not come with a lock & key, not that this would really stop someone very motivated. But, I would feel better if I could lock the battery box.

Does anyone know of an aftermarket product to lock the battery box on a 2015 Flying Cloud?

Streamline floor/shell construction

I saw a past post with this same question, but can't find that post now. Either way, nobody responded to the post, so here it is again!

Does anyone know how the plywood floor interfaces with the shell on a 1969-1974 Streamline? Is it like an Airstream, where the plywood was laid on the frame and then the shell on top of the plywood? Or, I have heard Argosy/Avion's were constructed differently?

I'm acquiring a trailer of this vintage, and mentally prepping for what's to come.

Thanks!!

Cabinets And Appliances - 1965 Sovereign

Title: Add New - Airstream Trailer Classifieds - Airstream Trailers For Sale
I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

We are getting revamping our airstream and getting rid of the entire interior. This is a 1965 Sovereign that sat empty and unused for many years with one of the windows open (a couple of critters lived inside during that time). Full Disclosure: the interior is in rough shape. But the interior is original. The interior is good for someone who wants to give these cabinets and appliances some serious TLC, or use the cabinets as a template. I've included some pictures of the teak so you get a sense of the original cabinets. We have carefully removed the cabinets by unscrewing them (versus busting them out). Obviously given the poor condition of the the cabinets and the appliances, we are not looking to make a fortune by selling them. We're just trying to move the entire interior to someone who will appreciate that these are original and make a few bucks along the way that we can use towards our own project.

Traveling with a full tank of fresh water?

We have a (new to us) 2009 Flying Cloud. Is it OK to travel with a full water tank?

We previously had another brand of trailer (toy hauler) and when we traveled with a full tank it actually bent the bracing under the trailer. Granted the tank on the toy hauler was enormous, but we need to be sure on the Airstream.

I searched for this question in other Forum posts and could not find the answer. Everyone has such great information to share. Thank you so much for your helpful input.

Just bought a 30 ft Airstream - next a TV

Just bought a 30 ft Airstream and now am looking at towing vehicles.

I'm getting a lot of conflicting messages on how big of a TV I need to pull the 7150 lbs dry weight, plus around 1500 lbs extra when loaded with a tongue weight of around 700 lbs plus.

The plan is to start living full time traveling America in a few years after retirement, so I don't want to get something that is just ok, but I want something that will pull us everywhere we want to go, mountains and all.

I'm looking at the RAM 2500 Diesel 6.7 Cummins, but I am open to suggestions.

I would love to hear your experience and suggestions.

Ruby Airstream is a beautiful lady! She's a little lonely though. Only used a handful of times, she's looking for a forever home that will cherish her.

Everyone has their idea of an ideal layout and, for us, it was one that allowed for a full kitchen. The 20' is perfect for us and for anyone else who likes to cook. The bed, nestled in front with its wraparound windows, is just the most cosy and comfortable nest. 1971 Airstream Globetrotter 21 - Michigan

Title: 1971 Airstream Globetrotter 21 - Michigan
I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

Priced to sell... will leave some meat on the bone to move this antique quickly. Mostly original and in very good condition. New-original upholstery and blinds, an newer hard wood floor installed 4 years ago, newer gas/electric refrigerator and A/C (with cover). A couple small dings on exterior and could use a new polish, but no leaks and all windows work nicely. Awning hardware needs a bit of TLC, I never used it since I bought it from an enthusiast 3 years ago. Brand new tires and battery installed last fall. Electric jack included, adjustable ball hitch assembly included. Hot water heater, stove, range, lights, etc...all work, I've camped in it once a year for the past 3 summers for an entire week without issue. Hope to sell it someone who appreciates a well kept CLASSIC, that could put a little work in it and probably double their money if they wanted. Photos to be added soon. Regards, Tom (4/26/15)

Electric car charging station... why not me too?

So last week as I was lamenting my inability to plug in my AI (to really deep charge my batteries as I have read I should), my co-worker suggested I plug her in at my work site, where the electric cars re-charge.

At first I thought - no, but now I'm thinking hummmmm??????? If I could actually maneuver her over to the plug.... will that work?

I have to give that Lady props for creativity as that never crossed my mind! :)

Wet bath construction?

I'm doing a full monty on a 1967 Streamline Duchess. Want to build a wet bath but am having trouble finding kits, materials or instructions. Anyone know how to build something like the link below?

This shower is absolutely gorgeous! | Before and After: Get Ready to Rough It in Style With a Decked-Out, Fully Renovated Airstream | POPSUGAR Home

The walls should be easy to figure out but I'm not sure which shower pan, transition to the shower pan, etc. Anything pre-built would be awesome. I'd even switch to fiberglass/acrylic if I could find something that would slide in.

This will be a center bath along the curbside with about 45" x 33" (not too late to tweak a few inches to accommodate prefab). This will go over a wheel well that is 12"high and wide the length of the room.

Ideas? Recommendations? Materials (sealants, bath pan, etc)? Prefab options?

Traveling thru Virginia, Rt 11 or 29

We will be traveling thru Virginia in June and try to avoid Interstates as much as possible. We wondered if anyone has traveled down Rt 11 which parallels I-81? Also considering using Rt 29 and would appreciate info and or advice about either or other options.
Thanks

Loose lay vinyl plank flooring, taking the plunge

Still trying to move ahead and finish up Phase 3 http://ift.tt/1EuUQDk We went ahead and ordered 96 sq feet of a loose lay vinyl plank product from Shaw called 5th and Main Atlantic Station in a wood color that should match the cherry cabinets fairly well. It's not cheap, about 4 bucks a foot or almost 400 for a bit less than 100 sq ft. but I'm hoping it works well in the RV environment. It is considered a commercial product with a very thick wear layer. I wasn't familiar with loose lay, but it essentially just lays on the floor and does not move once it's down. And it feels very solid, none of that hollow, clacking sound you get from other floating floors.

It has no interlocking edges, every thing is square cut with a very slight bevel. You can glue it down throughout or just the edges, My plan is to do just the edges with everything else just sitting. It's really amazing how once a piece is sitting on the floor that no matter how much you push on it, it wont move or slide. The adhesive is a specialized spray can type that you coat the edge planks to lock it in place, though I'm not sure its absolutely necessary but I'm doing it for peace of mind. I'm hoping this will alleviate the issue with the shrinkage on the ends from the changes in temperature. This is what it looks like from the company website:

I had to remove all the previous parquet wood floor which left the existing subfloor fairly ugly and less than smooth. I've patched and sealed it up and have cut 4 sheets of 1/8th inch ply to go on top to provide a smooth surface for the tile. Those will be glued down and stapled to the subfloor and then the tiles will be laid once I get the painting done.

Titling a 1967 streamline issues

Hey gang. I've recently purchased a 1967 streamline 26 footer and I am having a hard time figuring out how to get it re titled. It was at salvage and there is no bill of sale. It was originally titled out of kansas. Any clues? Thanks.

Black Tank Cleaning

Does anyone know if the black tank dump "neck" (not sure what to call it) is a straight shot back into the tank? I'm using the Sewer Solution and it doesn't seem to be very effective getting back there on its own. Once I hook up the water rotor thing on the back it seems to get pretty clean.

Any tips for keeping a clean and smell-less tank is appreciated as well!

Best Campground in Georgia Mountains

Good morning everyone,

My wife and I are looking to spend 4 nights 5 days in the Georgia Mountains in June. It is a mini-vacation away from the children for some rest, reading, and relaxation. I have searched for different campgrounds, but can't figure out which is the right campground. I know there is the airstream only campsite, but from the photos it looks like there isn't much privacy or space between the spots.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I love my new bunkhouse!

samedi 25 avril 2015

I've owned it a week. Camped 6 nights with the kids. Seacliff state beach. Attachment 237070
One of the kids after last nights rain. I can't wait to make more family memories with them. We still haven't organized the trailer, but we're having a blast being disorganized. I can't believe how many people ask about the airstream every day. I even had a little kid tell me the sewer hose was cool. Made me laugh.
Now to plan the next trip......

Newbie..... Feeling silly..... may be feeling cold....

My first true camping trip is coming up, it is going to be cold and now I'm feeling silly.... I figured that when we finally get to "plug in" that the furnance will be powered by the electricity... I have read the owners manual a couple of times and after reading some posts I now have the sneaking suspicion that the heat only runs off the propane? And... that the furnace needs electricity to run. Is this true?

I'm hoping that summer shows up soon, and when it does will the air conditioning run off the electricity or does that need propane?

And...what does that darn generator do? I know it should give me electricity when I'm willing to wake the dead, but will it give me heat or air conditioning in a pinch? I'm positive this greedy thing loves propane!

And... (yes I'm needy -sorry).... last week we de-winterized her and I took her out solo for a weekend of dry camping (in my friend's driveway (aka - plan B, a house with all the comforts if I totally screwed up)). I have now experienced the wonders of running water along with hot water in my Interstate! :D I also know a lot about what I don't know... Thank God for this forum!

About that hot water.. I figured out to flip the gas (looking) switch in the white box to get hot water.... but what is the lightening bolt switch for?

Thanks all for the help, I should have my girl all figured out by the end of the year

2 Electrical wireing questions

We have a 1980 international and are doing a remodel. Today I took the medicine cabinet off the wall in the bathroom and there is a hole about the size of a quarter that has several wires in it.
Yellow with nothing hooked to it that seems to be a hot wire
White with nothing hooked to it that seems to be a ground wire
2 smaller blue with a white stripe that are hooked to the furnace thermostat

A Red,Green,Brown, and Purple wire that are just cut off, and sticking out.
Does anyone know what the cut off wires are for or where they are supposed to go?

Second Question, We are installing a gas/electric refrigerator, it came with a small electric only frig.
Behind the frig is a Yellow wire and a White wire. I believe the White wire is a ground.
There is no juice to the Yellow wire though.
Can anyone tell me how to trace the Yellow wire to see where the problem might be or where to find the other end of it so I could test and see if it will carry current, and what and maby where is it supposed to start, and get it's juice.

Thanks for any advise , from 30+ years in a truck I know what a pain electrical can be.

Radio swap on 2015 FB Flying Cloud

Hello all,

I just traded in my 2015 FC23FB for an FC27FB. (yup, we were one of those "should went bigger" kind of folks) It has the same Clarion M502 radio that my 23 had and I despise that thing. Too complicated to work. I'm going to swap out with a compatible Alpine unit and add Sirius. My questions for the forum are:

Are you able to remove the access panel that the radio is attached to, or do you just go in from the front by pulling the radio out with the removal tools?

If you added Sirius, tell (or show) me how you ran the antenna. I've heard a few folks mounted to the skylight. I'm looking for a very clean install, no wires hanging out or visible.

I don't pick up the new coach until 5/7, but I want a good game plan when I get it, so tell me what you folks have done.

Thanks,

Davz2k

Belly pan paint or Bedliner???

Hello, i have 2015 airstream and i already have corosion on the belly pan. I took the trailer in november and store it for the winter and didn't wash the belly pan. So calcium did a litle corosion. I put some oil all over it, but I am tiking to paint it or put some Bedliner. Isit a good idea?

front overhead cabinet

Anyone ever pull their overhead cabinet? I could use a tip on getting it out. I have both sides off, visors speakers & liner under the cabinet off. Thanks

What did I do???

Total newbie here.

I recently purchased a 1960 Safari 22. It has the long battery box on the front, below the window (outside).

I was installing an electric tongue jack today and when I went to run it I lost all power to the trailer? What the...?

The jack has a single wire with a breaker that is intended to be attached to the positive battery terminal (which I did). The ground is achieved via star washers that bite into the base of the jack and the bolts that secure it to the trailer.

When I finished wiring it up, I pushed the jack button and it moved for about a second and then quit. Then I noticed I had no power in the trailer either... all the 12V lights wouldn't work.

Since the jack was attached to directly to the positive battery terminal and the ground was achieved by the trailer ultimately being connected to the negative terminal... what happened?

The battery is brand new and reads 12.7V. I checked the circuit do-dad (breaker?) shown in the photos below that goes on the two positive wires entering the trailer and it appears to be conducting.

Since the jack wasn't attached to these two wires and also doesn't work, I can only assume the main ground has an issue.

What am I missing and how do I figure it out.?

Here's a shot of the battery terminal and with breaker (exposed - normally wrapped in tape). Don't worry, it's not touching the negative terminal.

Inside the trailer are two access doors under the dinette table.

The one on the left appears to have one of the two orange positive leads.

The one on the right appears to be the wiring for the running lights, and feed from the tow vehicle.

I don't know where the second orange positive lead goes but I didn't see it in either of these access openings.

Any advice or suggestions?

Cyclo leaving surface cloudy

When I use the wool bonnet with Nuvite C, the surface looks great with the exception of the swirl marks. When I cyclo with Nuvite S afterward, it looks cloudy or hazy and does not have the deep shine I see in other's photos. The shine looks better before the cyclo than afterward. The cyclo is removing the swirl marks but leaving it cloudy. I am using the soft polishing cloths from perfect polish on the cyclo. What am I doing wrong?

Advice on 1976 Sovereign Restoration

I own a 2012 25' FC. Last fall, some folks that live near me put their 1976 30' Sovereign up for sale. Quite impulsively, I bought it (price very reasonable, trailer looked in good shape for its age (see photos)). So, now I need to figure out what to do with it! I like my 2012 FC, but something about this vintage AS has grabbed me. I'm considering tackling the rehab myself as a hobby (after all, we still have the 2012 that we can use in the interim so there is no time pressure).

I've never done anything like this, although I'm reasonably handy. The innards (like electrical, plumbing, etc) don't scare me too much. However, the exterior does (exterior repairs, windows, polishing, etc.). I'm looking for advice on how to start something like this, resources, shops in and around Iowa that may be able to assist, etc. If someone had a checklist of things look for/to do, that would be a big help.

My wife thinks I'm crazy for wanting to take this on, but I can't help myself. Like an itch I just need to scratch!

Thanks in advance for any advice and pointers!

Rear Air Bags

Our 79 Airstream Excella motorhome may need new rear airbags. They seem to have a slow leak we can't find. Where can we order these from, how do we know if we need a complete kit or just the airbags and how do we find out brand and size to order?
Thanks, Lynn

Our escape from Denver, CO

Just a quick pointer to our blog post about how we got trapped in Denver by that huge spring snowstorm roughly 10 days ago and how we escaped to continue our westward journey. No mean feat, considering that I-80 and I-70 were both closed at the time. :)

Need a good 5 gal water container

I often camp in locations where you can get water from a spigot that's too far to hook up to with a hose. I use an Igloo 5 gallon container and carry the water to my AS. The container has the necessary water spout that will fit into the Airstream's tank input. It also has a vent that speeds the movement of water from container to tank. However, the container leaks where the threaded spout connects to the container. I've had several of these--each time thinking the next one won't leak--but they all do. I stand at the side of the trailer, pants getting wet, mentally composing a letter to the head of Igloo about how he ought to try his own stuff from time to time.

Does anyone know of a manufacturer that produces a tank with the necessary spout and vent and that doesn't leak?

Stripping paint from interior panels

Affordable LED strip DIY?

Spring greetings forum folks~ I feel some pride having just converted the two florescent bulbs in the ballast over the sink in my 1981 Execella with two LED 12 inch strips (I know that's no biggy for many here :). Now I want to do the rest of the 12 inch ballasts, but at $20 per strip and two strips per ballast that is very costly.

Is it possible to buy a roll of the 12V flexible LED strip lights with adhesive backing and cut them into 12 inch lengths and somehow attach the base with the positive and negative wire (don't know what to call this) myself?

Here's the part I just successfully installed from Out of Doors Mart (who I really like) plus a great short DIY video: LED Warm White strip for repairing 12in light T250mmWW [15751W-05] - $19.95 : Out-of-Doors Mart!, More Airstream Parts on-line than anyone!

And here's a roll of the flexible warm light strips I am curious if I can create my own 12 inch strips to install: http://ift.tt/1GiSceH

Thanks for any advice!

Picking up '86 sovereign at JC and no power

We picked up our AS from the factory on Thursday. Went over all work with technician. Had a bit of a problem when we hooked up our AS and plugged in the 7 way cord into our TV but no power to AS. The technicians said the batteries were dead from sitting around off and on for 6 months at the factory. They tested the TV power outlet and said no juice to the AS batteries. I didn't have my Ford TV owners manual but none of the fuses appeared problematic.
One of the techs plugged a shoreline to the AS but still no power. I was getting worried.
Then one of the AS supervisors came out and said the shoreline wasn't plugged in correctly. Got interior lights and running lights. So, I pulled off. As soon as we left, the lights were extremely dim. I didn't know whether to go back to the service center or not and decided to go on the 125 miles to Cincinnati.
Today, two days later, lights inside the AS all work after having the AS on a shoreline. Started up the TV and plugged in the 7 way plug and all lights worked including running lights with and without shoreline.
We had a new 3 stage converter put in so maybe there just wasn't enough juice to power the lights through the TV.
Does the TV 7way plug go through the battery to the AS running lights? That would account for the low to no lights after leaving the factory. Today the running lights worked with the TV running and off, with the shoreline plugged in or not.

Any thoughts?

Arches National Park at Night

New Counters

Has anyone put in new laminated counters? I thought it was going to be easier that it now appears. To replace kitchen counter, found out have to take out range and oven. I was told that to replace the counter in the bathroom, it is a tight fit because they install the counter and then the refrigerator wall snug tight. Also found out the counters in the bedroom (we have a double bed) requires the removal of the cabinets.

Anyone ever done this?? Suggestions???

Thanks in advance.

30' FC: Is one furnace enough in cold weather?

As Arizona residents, we don't often think much about furnaces, though it can get very cold in the high elevation parts of the state, in winter.

As we await delivery of our 2016 30FC, I'm wondering how we might expect our new airstream (2 heat pump/ACs and 1 furnace) to do in cold weather.

Does the single furnace keep the place comfy in cold weather?

Do any of you airstreamers feel the need to use auxillary space heaters in cold climates?

Should we expect the two rooftop heat pumps and one furnace to be all we might need when visiting places in cold temps? (We don't plan to spend any time in the snow, in the Airstream.)

Many thanks, on advance, for your thoughts.

exterior scare light lenses

I am looking for clear lenses for the exterior scarelights for our 62 tradewind. The old lenses measure 4 1/4 inches and the pieces that are there are held in with 4 screws. It has four of the lights, which seems odd, since all of the tradewind pictures I see have one or two. Maybe it was owned by someone who had a lot of nosey neighbors.Anyway, I see ads for a lot of ones that use 3 holding screws but not with 4 screws. Any suggestions. thanks, bill b.

1973 Airstream Safari 23 - Oregon

Title: 1973 Airstream Safari 23 - Oregon
I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

This is a complete gut-and-rebuild of a dark and tired, albeit highly functional,1970's interior layout. The underlying design brief was to:

1) use some of the “hot" materials of the1930s (aluminum, vinyl, light woods...) that were used in many early, custom Airstreams, to

2) recreate a light, airy, open-plan space honoring the spirit of Modernism, and

3) to do so while achieving high efficiency by installing the best available contemporary heating, electrical etc systems.

Following the completed remodel the trailer was twice exhibited by invitation at the Palm Springs ModernismWeek (2011 & 2012).

The original exterior, in good condition, is a candidate for polishing.

In addition to the original Owner's Manual and 1973 Airstream Service Manual, we include diagrams of new wiring and plumbing, manuals for installed equipment, etc.
Also included in the sale are the full compliment of cookware, kitchen utensils, flatware, tableware and RV-specific bedding (the excellent but no longer available “Travasaks”), hook-up bits for the Hensley Hitch, etc.
* * *
We are also selling our perfectly-matched and fully tricked-out-for-towing low-milage 1999 Ford F-150 Supercab pickup.
