Finally did the weighing thing at the CAT scales today. On our way home from 4 day trip so pretty well loaded. 2007 Dodge 2500 diesel and 1988 25' Excella. Reese straight line with 800 lb bars. full fresh water tank. 1 full, 1 empty propane. through hitched then with the truck unhitched. I have summarized below.
Trailer 6320
Truck 7880
Trailer placard GVW 6800. Axle GW 3200 lbs per axle.
Trailer axle carries 5520 hitched
Truck carries 800 lb of trailer wt.
Truck front axle not hitched: 4460
Truck front axle hitched: 4300
Truck rear axle not hitched: 3420
Truck rear axle hitched: 4380
The interesting thing to me is the off load of 160 lbs on the front. I adjusted the hitch so that the front fender height was returned to the unloaded height. But with only 1 inch of travel that is a hard measurement to make.
I have the hitch turned down almost, but not quite, fully and run 4 links between the bar and the lift.
I think the truck drives well. I tried 5 links and thought the truck felt a little loose. Does anyone see any advantage to try to move more wt up front?
We probably carry another 150 lbs of food and propane when topped off. Some will be on axle, some under the gaucho, and 30 more lbs on the tongue with the propane filled. I am pleased with the weight under the rated load. I run the 15" Michlen XL tires so I like the low axle wt.
Do not know the dry wt of the truck. I have a fiberglass low top and probably 300 lbs of tools, generator, slide box, grill, etc in it. I love the 2500, but with the 800 lb load on the truck I think I could pull it easily with a 1/2 ton too.
