Remove center aluminum panel from screen door

I'd like to remove the aluminum panel from the center of the screen door and replace it with something clear -- like lexan. Has anyone done this? Is that piece of aluminum doing anything structural that I don't know about? It looks like it's just in there with caulk and would come out easily.
