First trip with newbie Brother-in-law

Hi all I have a trip planned out for the second week of January going to Lake Havasu for the balloon festival and than on to quartzsite but than I remember that there can be snow and freezing temperatures.I am a little worried for my brotherinlaw we were looking for a small airstream but no luck he bought a new shasta airflyte cute starter but no winter underbelly so what is better during that time we are coming from Bakersfield,Barstow is hwy.40 to Needles Lake Havasu ok or go hwy.10 any tips from those that have gone before would help like to make his trip fun not have him worry about the road thanks
