I just traded my '03 Dmax for a 2012 F150 EB Platinum SCREW 5.5 with the stock 20" rims and 275/55 tires (Pirelli Scorpions). I'm just curious how folks are making out with the stock P rated tires. I know the tires are rated for the stated capacity of the truck, thats not the issue, I'm curious how you make out with the tires in the real world. With the winter they are predicting around here, it will likely be several months before I really get a chance to try it out myself, other than perhaps a "test" run after I set up the Equalizer hitch.
Next question and this might be better posted on the F150 forums but I'll give it a shot. Has anyone switched out for an LT tire? I see that Michelin, BF Goodrich and Goodyear all make an LT in the 285/55 20 size. From just nosing around a bit, it appears that tire would fit on the stock rims without problems. Anyone got any real world experience with the swap. I would think the LT's would be more stable, but perhaps the Ps aren't too bad either. As you can see in my signature, I tow a 28' Safari.
BTW, so far I really like the F150. It's got all the bells and whistles and seems to be quite comfortable so far (a longer trip than an hour will tell more). The seats in the Chevy where horrible as far as I was concerned. As much as I liked the Dmax the F150 is way more fun to drive on a day to day basis. It's much quieter and in comparison it handles like a sports car (which of course it isn't and shouldn't be driven as if it is).
I had the Michelin LTX's on my 2500 Silverado Dmax and they worked out very well. That said, I might be tempted to try the Goodyear Wrangler AT Adventure with Kevlar after reading the ratings on the Tire Rack site. Although being able to buy the Michelins at Costco (if they carry the size) is a plus for me (Costco only carries Michelins and Bridgestones).
Oh yeah, I do miss the sound and even the smell of the diesel at times LOL. Looking at the engine specs, the EB gives you the higher HP for "fun"/Acceleration with a decent torque level for pulling. For the F150: 365hp and 420 torque at a somewhat diesel like RPM of 2,500. For the Dmax: 235hp and 500 ft lbs of torque at 1,600. Of course the newer ones are a different story with around 700 ft/lbs of torque. But then I'm not pulling a triple axle 5er. Oh well, there I go off topic again. Back to the 20" stock wheel tire combos please......
