newbie question re hot water heater..

We have an Atwood 6 gallon hw heater..it does a great job but runs too often..In our bathroom there is w/ switch w/ toggles for electric and gas..and red light but the light flashes for a brief moment when we switch, but light remains off even w/ he heater runing..How do we turn down, adjust or turn off our hw heater?..the manual provided is unclear..
