1973 Airstream Sovereign 31 - Washington

Title: 1973 Airstream Sovereign 31 - Washington

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

Totally immaculate. Rear twin beds, center bath, and table/benches turn into a queen in the front. Original range and over works fantastic. The body has only one small rub/buff mark. I lived and traveled in "Driftwood" along the west coast for a year with my husband and 2 kids, under two years of age. On & off the grid, and never once lost power. Enough solar and batteries for a family of 4. She does have a few minor issues. If you are a serious buyer, then let me know and we can chat about those.

NEW:

-A/C

-Installed Grey Tank

-Mattresses

-Custom Cushions

-Frige & Freezer

-On Demand Water Heater

-Shower Pan

-Solar Panels & Controller

-Inverter

-FLOR Carpet Tiles

-Brakes

-3 Group 24 Batteries

adjustable vents for new ducting system

Has anyone found adjustable vent covers that will replace the non adjustable ones on the 2015 airstreams?

Outside "Moonlight"

Anyone have a tip on how to remove the metal ring around the exterior moonlight? While I'm at it, how about how to easily remove the plastic lens cap on the exterior tear drop running lights?

Thanks, John

Electrical Problem?

We own a Classic Serenity. I find that I cannot use the airconditioner and make toast at the same time. It seems that all 110 V outlets work off the one 30 Amp circuit and two simultaneous uses blow the fuse.

Has anyone tried to re -wire their Airstream and have a second feed either feeding off a 50Amp plug in (it will only supply 30 provided a three prong extention is used with an adapter) or by using the 20 Amp outlet and thereby separating some of the electrical uses from th emain circuit?

Thanks

PS Also on the front of the trailer there is a seperate plug- in. I assume that is simply an alternate to the main plug-in on the side in the event the camp outlet is too far.

Outside Dimensions

I am in the process of building a carport type building to cover my 1969 Sovereign 31 footer. The problem is , the trailer is not here yet and getting the cover built first on the list. I need to know how tall it is with and without the ac unit on top and the width.

I should have joined long ago. This site has been a big help.

AGM Batteries and Converter question

Just took our new 2015 25' Silver Cloud FB for it's 1st outing. Love the trailer!

But a question about the standard AS converter - which I realize is a 1 stage converter - ie; boat anchor. So I definitely plan to replace it.

My long term plan is to install solar and possibly AGM batteries.

bestconverter.com recommends the PD 4655 upgrade kit for around $200. The huge positive is that this unit replaces the current unit, thereby saving space. The only downside that I see is that there is no temperature compensation option.

If you look at Lifeline's website they recommend Absorbing Voltage from 15.8V (@ 0F degrees) to 13.0V (@ 120F) and Float Voltage of 14.8V (@ 0F) to 13.0V (@ 120F).

An alternative would be to replace the AS Converter with a Xantrex Truecharge2 40amp. Positive = temperature compensation. Negative = $320+ cost AND it would be a separate unit which would take up some space.

So my question is - how sensitive are AGM batteries to temperature? ie; do they really need the temperature compensation? Will a converter with no temp compensation lessen the AGM battery life?

Battery quick disconnects best one to get

I have my airstream in indoor storage and plan on taking in out and about at least once a month. I don't want to take the batteries out so would like to get a quick disconnect switch installed. It has to be easy to use and hopefully something my son can install. He works on his own cars so should be up to the challenge. I am looking for suggestions on the best one to use. I like the look of the ones that have a turn dial. Thanks!!

What is it?

Here is an older Airstream sitting for several years behind a barbed wire/chain link fence, photographed with some difficulty. Whether this is for sale or not I do not know, but will check on this if someone requests this.

Ultra III converter installation

Just finished the installation of Randy's suggested Ultra III replacement for the 55A Parallax 6300 converter. The information on this forum is terrific and answered 95% of my questions before and during installation. I have a 2013 20' Flying Cloud and have also swapped my flooded batteries for AGM's. Two questions that I could find no answers:

1. Upon disconnecting the old converter I had two black wires (soldered together as one) running into the A/C circuit breaker. One was the power for the converter the other was spliced to the pigtail via wire nut to a 12ga black wire leading out the back of the A/C box. As per Randy's instruction connected the converter power line and the "black 12ga" line together with wire nut and ran pigtail into circuit breaker. He could not answer me as to what the black 12ga wire was powering. Any ideas/thoughts?

2. Upon connecting battery box to system (AC power off) I noticed the Charge Wizard monitor LED lit up and was blinking (storage). I was under the impression the LED represented active mode of the charger. With AC power disconnected is it showing the computed charger stage (Boost, Normal,Storage) need for the batteries?

Installation did take longer than the advertised amount by a factor of 2.5, but I am not a professional in any way. Directions were very good. Everything went as well as could be expected. Next is the Trimetric battery monitor.

2005 Airstream Classic 34 - Florida

Title: 2005 Airstream Classic 34 - Florida

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

Enter this spacious, luxury- recreational vehicle and note the welcome feeling that is created by the leather front sofa, dinette, kitchen cabinets, and how the Airstream Company designers brought this beauty to such a high level of customer satisfaction. This trailer is equipped to provide the convenience, safety, and all of the comforts of home: Solar panels with 1500 watt inverter, full size LG refrigerator, backup camera, Hensley Hitch, gas/electric water heater, Heat Pump, Catalytic Gas Heater, and Convection/Microwave oven.

water heater to heat fresh tanks?

I was just mulling over the different options for avoiding freeze damage to fresh water tanks and am a bit stumped. My trailer project will be getting a new frame and tanks so nothing is stock and rather than go with the traditional rv furnace with the ducting below the floor or electric tank heat pads I was wondering what else I could try. Yes I like to make things harder than they need to be...

I thought I'd had a brain wave when thinking how can I efficiently heat the water in the fresh tanks when it occurred to me that I would already have an on demand water heater. I was wondering if I could add a temperature sensor to the fresh tank tied to a solenoid valve coming off the water heater hot side back into the tank? Valve opens at 4 degrees C closes at say 8? Just guessing on the temps.

It seems too simple really so the bit I'm stumped with is would it be the amount of propane it would suck up or would it be the electric draw for the water pump that is going to kill my fantastic idea?

Replacing Decal 88 Excella

Hello has anyone successfully replaced a the long decal that runs amidships on an excella? It seems the decal is available to purchase. Appreciate any advice!

Leaking from Fantastic Fan Vent

I tried caulking over the factory caulk with silicone (mistake?) but leak recurs

after a few weeks when we have a prolonged (all day) rain. Doesn't leak when driving thru heavy rain! I suspect the hairline weather cracks in the plastic frame that is attached to the roof are the culprits. Can these be caulked or should I have the frame replaced. Is it usual for a 4 year old AS to have the plastic crack?

Parallax 5300

I've read a lot about how the typical Airstream converters are for your batteries. I have a 2015 27FB International with 50A service. It has a Parallax 5300. Is this any better as far as smart charging goes or is this a pitch and replace item like most of the others? I intend to leave my Airstream plugged in to a 30A line all winter.

Need info on towing very small Airstream

Hello experts,

I am finally having my sweet 1953 17' Clipper renovated. It should be completed sometime in March and I am so excited. I need some advice on towing. At this point, I don't expect to travel further than about an hour from my home, back and forth to the family farm, about once a month. I have a '93 Mitsubishi Montero SR that is capable of pulling more weight than the Airstream but I just have a ball hitch that I had put on at the U Haul place to tow a little trailer to haul lawn mowers, etc. I have moved the Clipper around my property with that ball but not taken it on the highway. I am not a pickup kind of girl so I don't have any plans to buy one of those massive rigs with a huge towing package. Do I need that for such a small trailer? Is there something I can add to the set up I have to make it safer? When I hear about sway I get ice cold chills.

I would like to be able to go on longer trips if I want to and I will probably have to buy a new vehicle in the not too distant future but I would be thinking more of an SUV type than a big pickup. Do you have a special towing package added to those at the dealer or do you buy those and have them installed? i know most of this info is probably out there already but I would appreciate any responses.

Thanks for any advice. I love this site.

Sequoia National Monument in March?

So, I'm planning an alternate vacation for our vacation week running from 02/28/15 - 03/08/15. Originally we were headed down to Mexico (1st time South of the border in the AS) but my Dad, who a seasoned Mexico traveler,is having some health issues and is pulling out from his duties as tour guide.

So, I'm planning a bit of a SoCal/Nevada/ N. AZ. route instead.

After a few days in the San Diego area I was planning on a stop in/around the Sequoia National Monument, however in my research I'm noticing that the beginning of March may be a bit early in the "season" for that area.

Looking for input for as to whether or not I should maybe stick to lower elevations for this area, for this time of year. ( We'd prefer to avoid "Winter" type weather)

Thanks for any input. Todd.

Wounded Warrior

My wife and I have contributed to this cause for ten years now and we were pleased when the WBCCI took this cause on as one we supported as members of the club. As with most charities we at least always wonder if our money is well used by the people running the charity.

I've got a personal story which affirms the importance of this charity. Since my retirement, one year today, I've volunteered at a new dog rescue in Pittsburgh, PA. We take all breeds and all temperaments, rehabilitate those needed help and do some training as well which is what I do along with our certified trainer and behaviorist. Recently we took a dog in which was severely abused from Animal Control in another state. He had been beaten in the head with a baseball bat and then dragged behind a truck all because he would not perform properly as a bait dog in a dog fighting training ring. We got him and two others, he was very frightened and withdrawn, which is my specialty in dog training. We got him out of his shell in a week or so and he bloomed. A more loving dog of everyone and everything we have not had.

Now to my point, sorry for the length; a month later a young Marine with severe PTSD came to our shelter looking for a companion dog. He had two kids, divorced, living alone in an one bedroom apartment and getting treatment from the VA for his injuries and the PTSD. I showed him several dogs and then told him the story of Gopher our dog who had been through hell and back. They bonded at once and after an hour he decided to fill out an application and proceed from there. We continued to work with Gopher for the month and prepare him as an Emotional Support Dog for this Marine. The real point is this; the Marine had a jacket on a Wounded Warrior jacket and I asked them if they had helped him. He said "Wounded Warrior saved my life". They keep me focused on things other than my PTSD, take me on trips, coach me and are going to help financially with Gopher.

So, it satisfied my wife and I and I hope this takes any question anyone might have about Wounded Warrior out of their minds. I know there has been some internet garbage going around about them, its not true. According to this young man and several others who have now come to us, Wounded Warrior is a key part of their lives.

Keeping Batteries Charged

I know there are numerous posts on this forum regarding battery charging, and I've read most of them. At this point I'm almost glassy eyed, and in search of a simple, straightforward explanation.

I'm obviously a newbie, and I continue to worry about the batteries in our AS, which is stored at a facility not far from our home. I've hooked a trickle charger up to the batteries, but it never did indicate a full charge...the light stayed red rather than turning green. The monitor inside the trailer indicated that the batteries were at 14.1 after two days. I disconnected the charger yesterday, and when I returned this morning the monitor had the batteries down to 12.5....in one night, with the nighttime low somewhere in the 40s. The battery disconnect switch is set to "store", so the only draw on the battery is the CO2 detector.

My question: When you hook a battery trickle charger, such as the Battery Tender, up to the two battery configuration that the AS has, is one charger enough, or should I hook a separate charger up to each battery and charge simultaneously? I used a single charger, with the positive going to the positive post of one battery, and the negative going to the negative post of the other battery. Is there a problem with that? Thank you in advance for any advice.

We purchased a 2015 INTL Serenity 28 last week. Been Rving since 1971.

Have had 4 previous TT and a TC. Looking forward to learning more about Airstreams. Can't wait to take it on a long trip.:)

I have read all the massive paperwork 2 times that you receive when you purchase a new one. No where does it tell me where the AC Filters are. There are 20 pages of instructions on operation of the AC/heat pump controller. I page with no pics about maintenance of the unit.

Looking forward to meeting other Airstream owners.:D

Update on Bambi 2 axle, thank you Andy!

My last post was on September, 24, 2014 asking for help on a 1964 Bambi 2. I had ordered the axle through Andy at Inland RV based on his specifications. The first axle that he sent did not work. This Bambi 2 had to have a very custom axle. He worked with Bob Jones RV in Houston until it was perfect. Andy stands behind everything that he sells and takes great care of his customers. Thank you Andy and Chris Jones!

how much headroom

How much head room in a AS I have been in several but never notice are their more in different models

Newbie question: what is the deal with propane?

We r very interested in purchasing a class b sprinter chassis rv's and live on the east coast and want to do city travel as well as national parks and everywhere else. Do we really have to avoid tunnels if our RV carries propane? Doesn't that mean we should only be looking at propane-free rv's? Wondering why 90% of the models depend on propane. Also, it seems dumb since you have this beautiful diesel power plant, why not harness it for all the other power needs?

Hi, new member from SC

My husband and I just purchase a 2015 Airstream Interstate Ext. They winterized it for us at the dealers, so at present, it is in our driveway and we are studying the manuals. There are a lot of things we do not understand yet regarding the electrical options. We hooked it up to land power and are using the heater as the temp. is getting down to the 20's. is this necessary?

Window seals

vendredi 30 janvier 2015

Hello all!

A newbie here. I have a 1999 Excella 34 ft. All of the windows need their seals replaced. Is this something that is Airstream specific in terms of the actual window seal? Or is it something more generic that can be purchased from any RV supply such as Camping World etc???

Thanks in advance

1976 Airstream Argosy 24 - Oregon

Title: 1976 Airstream Argosy 24 - Oregon

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

1976 Airstream Argosy 24' camp trailer. I got this trailer last year and took it straight to Les Schwab for brakes and new bearings. I pulled this trailer a few hundred miles and got the title/tags for it in Oregon. Now this trailer is waiting for the next step. I work on these desirable trailers to get them back into the camping world. I kinda over extended myself and this particular one is going to have to go so I can catch up on some bills. This Argosy is in pretty good shape for its age. You won't have to go looking for a lot of odds and ends to make it the way it used to be because it is already all there, cabinets, counters, emblems. If you ever wanted to restore a trailer or want one that is all original then this trailer is by far your best shot as it is more intact than any trailer I have seen. This model has the rear bedroom, center full size bed with wardrobe across from the bed, front dining and the kitchen is between the bedroom and dining room. This is a great layout and provides the maximum amount of space for only a 24' trailer. This is a light weight trailer and is super easy to pull. This was a bicentennial trailer and should probably be repainted red white and blue but that is up to you. The front right bottom section has a couple of dents as seen in the photos but this could be replaced or hidden by rock guards pretty easy. The front windows are intact and look great. The rear window has been replaced with plexiglass but could easily be replaced with privacy glass. Work is needed on this trailer but not like the gutted ones that are way overpriced. I have not tested any of the plumbing, electrical or gas, and would expect they need attention or repairs. The original hubcaps are in the photos of the inside of the trailer. If you put a few more bucks into this trailer you could have a super trailer that will last a lifetime. These aluminum framed trailers last 10 times longer than the trailers that are being made today. The Argosy was the B grade aluminum from Airstream and that is why they painted them but the rest of the trailer has the same components as the Airstream, made by Airstream, sold by Airstream.

Advice on hitch and sway control

Just purchased a new 2015 FC Twin from Tampa RV today. They offer the Reese hitch and sway control system. I have a 2013 Ford F150 super crew Ecoboost with tow package for a TV. After reading the forum on hitches and sway control I'm really at a loss as to what to purchase. The F150 states it has a sway control as standard feature but I don't know if this is all I need to tow the 25' FC?? Any comments on this subject?

Does anyone use the Reese system or is there one that is considered the best?

Sold a 40' Tiffin Class A several years ago and I used a Blue Ox to tow a Honda CRV for over 38000 miles but sway control was not needed.

Thanks:)

How to tighten the vanity faucet

The vanity hot water handle is loose. Cold water is just fine, nice and tight, but the hot water is flopping and rattling. I don't see any hex key along the outside, how the heck do you tighten the handle on a 2006 Safari vanity?

Rivits and Rivet gun

Having been wanting to get started replacing a couple rivets on the outside and several on the inside of trailer. Would someone please let me know what size, type, to get for the 2006 Bambi SE 75th anniversary. And advise me on a rivet gun. There are so many to choose from and I do not have a clue. In addition, I believe there is a tool that shaves/smooth's the rivet heads once installed. If there is something else I will need, please let me know. Thanking you for any advice offered. Many thanks.

Too good to be true.

Yup, the Airstream Gods were playing with me today......

Motorhome rubber | tires, rims | Guelph | Kijiji

I contacted the guy selling them but he couldn't tell me the manufacturing dates on the tires as they were in his Dad's garage. So I made arrangements to take the work truck to Harriston (about 40 kms one way) to check them out, and he would bring them into work.

All the tires were new or almost new with the vent nubbies still on the rubber tread but the youngest one was 0806, made in the eighth week of 2006. He was flabbergasted when I turned them down. I told him that tires when turning stay pliable, but when not used get hard, and when loaded and eventually turning will develop checks and cracks.

It's back to square one and buying tires from a dealer. At least with the dealer I can insist on less than one year old rubber from their distributor.

It's -14C outside but tomorrow the one who wears the pants in the family and I are going to pick the foam for the three couches we're getting reupholstered in the next couple of months. My upholsterer is charging me $300.00 labour per couch to do the work. Foam if needed is extra.

1973 Argosy 20' New Wheels

It looks like my trailer wheels have been replaced with the standard white trailer type wheel. The size of the tires are ST225/75 D 15 (H78-15).

Any help as to the size of the original wheel, or what would be best?

AIRSTREAM letters

I am looking for two T's, one E and a R with nuts if possible for my 72 31' Sovereign exterior letters. Mine are missing, any help would be appreciated

Is this fuelish?

We are parked in a CG with electric and we spotted a fellow Airstreamer. This caught my eye. Very nice setup..appears to be a Honda 2000w generator, covered and locked with what looks like a very fancy sturdy stand.

Guess the thing that surprised me is this is positioned over his propane tanks. My question is added weight on tongue and gasoline above propane tanks?

GCFI Outlets with Integrated USB

Has anyone had experience replacing some of the existing outlets in their AS with these outlets that have integrated USB ports on them?

I'd like to install these in our AS, but I don't know that the wall depth is sufficient to flush mount this type of device. The one I've linked above looks pretty deep, but I'm wondering if there are other units out there with a shallower draw that would work in an AS.

Vertical Curved Rib Replacement

I am the proud owner of a 1952 Silver Streak Clipper. The last occupant liked windows so much he had 5 on the street side. So, during this "retrofit", they removed or cut up quite a few of the vertical ribs which are curved to follow the body shape. I am attempting to re-create those curved ribs.

I am using 0.30" 5052 T 32 for material. I have a HF 30" brake for bending the C section. So, in the day, how did the factory make all those beautifully curved ribs? Has anyone made a jig for doing this? I tried some ideas but end up totally wrecking the C shape.

Sent Private Message Question

Never mind! I just found the drop down item called "sent messages". That gives me the view I wanted.

David

I used to get a pop up saying I have a private message when I opened Air Forums. Lately I have not. I found a new private message in my CP and I selected reply in the advanced mode. I entered my reply and hit send.

But it appears my reply was not sent. Before, I could see my replies and the other party's replies similar to any e-mail string. Now, I don't see that.

Has something changed? Or have I accidently clicked on something and now have the wrong view in "private messages" in the Control Panel?

Thanks,

David

Issue with toad brake and turn signal lights

jeudi 29 janvier 2015

We have purchased a 2004 Jeep Wrangler and installed baseplate for towing with Roadmaster Falcon 2 towing hardware (on our 2014.5 Interstate EXT). When we hook up the taillights, only the left side brake and turn signals operate on the Jeep. Our installer believes that the problem lies with the Interstate. Has anyone else had problems with brake and turn signals for a toad for their Interstate?

thinking of buying a 2014 Sterling

Hello,

I have never owned an airstream and my wife and i are thinking of purchasing a new 2014 Sterling 25 foot trailer. Does anyone know why this trailer was discontinued? Any feedback would be great! The price is down to around 75,000 since it is a discontinued item and is an older model. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks:)

I need to know the outside dimensions of my trailer , width and height with and without ac unit. I would measure it myself but it is six hundred miles away. I need these dimensions to be able to build a shelter for the trailer.

Title: 1962 Airstream Safari 22 - California

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

This 1962 Airstream Safari is hard to find in such a great shape. The skin is awesome for its age. The polish is mirror like. It is a CA trailer with no rust damage. The license plate is black!!!

The interior has been renovated recently with new flooring, paint, vintage cabinet refurbishment, new light fixtures and upholstery. All the windows have been refurbished and work.

It is a California version of the Safari. The bathroom is in the rear (Toilet, center sink and shower), twin bed in the center with closet/vanity desk. The front is comprised of the kitchen area with a sofa/bed layout.

This trailer can be towed by any car.

Rally List by State

Just thinking....it would be nice if rallies could be listed by State/Date/Location. This would make it easy to find and possibly join a rally while on the road. Postal two-letter state abbreviations could work; maybe splitting up California into

N. CA and S. CA and maybe TX.....but I understand that "you don't mess with Texas"

Just a thought, not really sure how this works....

Picking up new trailer tomorrow!

Our 2015 Flying Cloud 28 Twin is fresh in from the factory, and we're picking it up in the morning. We now have come full circle. Started RVing in 2007 with a new Eddie Bauer Safari 25FB. Loved it, but it was a bit crowded for extended time away from fixed location house for two adults and two dogs! So, we bought a 2010 36' Tiffin Allegro Red diesel pusher. Great rig, complete with stack washer and dryer. But, too big and sorta scary in tight places, especially with a Jeep in tow. Which led to a 2012 Jayco Melbourne 29D class C. But, it just didn't feel right and still had to tow the Jeep, which I really did not like doing. So, back to Airstream, which I've always wanted anyhow. This time a bit longer, and with the dinette and couch, should be just what we need. Have heard that the fifth RV is the one you really wanted. I'm hoping that's wrong and we keep the FC for a long time. Anyhow, now that we're proud Airstream owners again, look forward to participating in forum discussions. Have been lurking for several weeks and have picked up many great tips. Thanks to all who share so freely of your knowledge and experience. We're ready to hit the road!

Campground Near Pensacola FL Recommendations

Hey incredibly smart group of Airstreamers! (Sucked right up there, didn't I?) I've got a bit of training to attend in Pensacola the beginning of March, and was wondering what your favorite campground recommendations would be within 30 minutes of Pensacola.

I always wondered why people started these threads, and now I know. It's REALLY hard to tell anything about a campground from their website...

-Red, looking for a winner...

What makes a rally?

Hi All, I am up on the West Coast of Canada on Vancouver Island.

I have never seen a rally come to the island and have never been to one as of yet, so I am curious. What makes a rally? A certain minimum of Airstreams or other vintage trailers? Organized events? CookoffS? What happens at these and what are you favourite things and least favourite things about going to Rallys. What are your personal expectations

I am interested in organizing one here on the island but I just don't know what the expectations are. Does the Rally organizer pay for the camp area or do people attending book and pay for their own spots? How does liability work. If it is in a licensed campground and someone falls and breaks a leg do I have to worry about liability or is that covered by the camp areas insurance or waivers. Do I need to personally have waivers

Some input would be great.

Thank You Everyone

pp clearance issue

I have recently installed a pp on our 2013 International. I located the weight distribution jacks as far back as they can go and still allow the storage compartment door to open. My issue is that the propane tank cover is now wedged in between the jack heads from behind and the trailer jack motor in front, to the point it is being damaged each time I need to remove it to fill a tank. The front of the cover is also pushed in an uncomfortable amount by the trailer jack motor. Rotating the jack motor doesn't look as though I would gain any more space. Has anyone with the front storage compartment had this issue?

Thanks.

Date of Manufacture of Propane Tanks

I would appreciate some help as to how one reads the info on the propane tanks so as to determine the date they were manufactured. On the Classic thread, someone noted their tanks were manufactured in 2007 and they had a 2015 Classic.

So, how does one determine the date of manufacture.

Thanks so much....

refinish tub and bathroom area

Several weeks ago I called to find someone to refinish my bathroom in AS, 2 people were going to meet me at my trailer, surprise, surprise, no one showed.

I checked Angies list and she provided no recommendations and added this group is very unreliable.

I am now pursuing doing it myself, and found this company that so far checks out good.DIY Bathtub Refinishing Kits - Bathtub Refinishing Supplies. they are called bath works.

1. Has anyone ever done this themselves?

2. Has anyone ever used this product?

3. I have painted and done some body work before so am not worried if i can find out the tricks.

4. They claim the roll on method with a light spay application of solvent after the roll on will give a professional job.

Any help or info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Phantom 4 amp inverter draw - Help please

I recently installed a 2000 watt inverter which draws 1 amp or less when turned on with nothing connected to it. When I plug the shore plug into the inverter (converter/charger unplugged and fridge on LP of course) There is a 4 amp 12 vDC draw from the inverter with everything I can think of unplugged or or disconnected on the AC side.

Is there anything else in the 110 vAC system that could be drawing 4 amps from the 12 vDC side of the inverter. Tank heaters, lights or something else I am missing???? The list of items I have disconnected from 110 vAC is below...

110 vAC Unplugged or Disconnected:

  • All outlets

  • Fridge

  • water heater

  • microwave

  • converter/charger

110 vAC still connected:

  • Air Conditioning Unit

New Camper Shell for Ford F-250?

Hi guys!

We are looking to buy a truck topper for our new Ford F-250 and are not having a lot of luck researching online. It seems like you can't get a price without requesting a quote... and so far there are only two companies I've found (Leer and Hawk). I just want to get some advice from someone who has actually purchased and/or owned one. How much should I be budgeting if I want it painted to match the truck? Are their any other manufacturers to look into? We don't really need anything fancy, we'll just be putting the generator and other equipment we want protected in the bed.

We are also looking to get a spray in bed liner, and even though there is plenty of info on those when we google feel free to weigh in on that too if you have experience.

Thank you SO SO much for your help.

Switch for front lights?

Plugged in the shore powert for the first time and started testing electrics. Vent hood fan not working and neither is the porch light or the light over the kitchen sink. All other lights work with "local" switches on the fixtures except the two lights in the front by the couch. These two appear to stay on all the time and the fixtures have no switches. Is there a wall switch hidden somewhere?

Well, I've been the proud owner of a 79 Sovereign 31 for almost 10 years, and it's about time to give her a little more TLC than the standard 'tarp 'er up for the winter' that I've been doing up until now. Twisted PP Stinger

We bought a Propride a year ago for our 25' 1970 Airstream and have put about 3,000 miles on it. The stinger is slightly twisted to the right along the axis of that portion of it that inserts into the TV receiver. We noticed this after a 2,000 trip. I put the TV on a lift and the hitch looks fine. I emailed Sean who said that a twisted stinger is not normal, that I should be able to use it, but should "watch it." He asked if the head moved side-to-side by hand if if we ran our chains through the bars. Yes to both. Our TV is a 2014 ML350 and we don't over torque the jacks because the front wheel wells are 1/2" higher with the jacks raised than without the TT hitched up. Has anyone else experienced a twisted stinger or know what causes it?

Shower Door Bottom Seal Failure

Our second seal (vinyl sweep) on the bottom of our shower door has failed.

We have a 2014 International 27'FB, so the first and second failed seals were only about 6 months old each.

I tried duct tape this last time when part of the seal had delaminated, but, in addition to being ugly, it didn't work.

I found online, and also, at Amazon what appears to be a replica of the original seal:

Two-Pronged Shower Vinyl Sweep and Seal- Gordonglassusa.com

However, so far I have just removed the entire seal and the shower door shows no sign of leaking after several showers.

Battery separator

Took my coach in for service. Both batteries were losing charge, after posting on the forums it was suggested that my battery separator was malfunctioning..

It turned out that a wire from the battery boost had a screw in it and was causing it to short out.. So I had a constant drain on power even when the coach battery was turned off..

All fixed now, and I'm having them give me a quote to increase the solar power... Pick it up this week. I miss having it near by even though I won't be using it anytime soon.. 😀

2009 Suburban Integrated Trailer Brake Controller

I just bought a new 2014 28 International Serenity and will be using my 2009 Suburban 2500 as the TV. It has an integrated trailer brake controller. Is this compatible with AS brakes? According to the manual, a dealer has to connect the wires for the battery feed and trailer brake pins in the hitch since I have not towed with it before.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Battery Question

I am truly a newbie when it comes to the Airstream. We purchased our first one in December of 2014 and have been out twice. It is a 2015 27FB. I noticed that once we got it home and were getting it ready for the first outing, the battery was dead. Since I have a 30 AMP circuit at my home, i place the battery switch to the in use position and 24 hours later the battery seemed to be fine. I did find however, that the water levels in one of the batteries was really low....no problem added distilled water to the correct level. When we went on our second trip, I once again did not check for the batteries until we went to depart and checked the fridge to make sure it was on propane and low and behold.....all power to the coach was dead....no lights...nothing. (I am still trying to build a comprehensive pre departure checklist...lol) After camping for three days, I tried to test the battery again, and this time when I switched to battery power it showed 12.8 but quickly went to 12.4 and stabilized there.?? I returned to shore power for the remainder of the trip. Upon arriving home, I left my 30 AMP plug off for about 3 hours and then checked the battery again and this time it was 12.7 steady...water level low again. I am beginning to wonder if the original batteries might already be bad and if I should replace with to AGM batteries? If so, what AGM batteries have you all used. Any thoughts? I am pulling it back to to the dealer on Monday to have the full awning package installed.

Hello, and thanks in advance for any assistance. There is a 1993 Airstream Land Yacht for sale local to me for what seems to be a good deal, but I wanted to get some opinions. It is a man selling his brothers estate, and it's listed for $3000. I won't be able to get in it to crank it or see the inside until this weekend but I went by the storage facility where it's stored and looked at the outside. The main concern I had is that about 5 or 6 feet from the back there is a seam going from top to bottom on both sides of the RV. It looks like it cracked it the same place on both sides. One side looks superficial but the other side looks like there was some attempt to patch it. I don't know if there is a known issue with these campers, or does it sound like a possible accident happened. I'm going to upload a pic I took of it in a few minutes once my phone charges. Thanks again

Camping on the beach in Florida

We're planning a trip to Florida and would like to camp on the beach with full hookups, or at least electricity. I've heard about a campground in Destin. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Lightly used mattress for 16' Bambi Sport 2012. This is the mattress that came with our trailer when we bought it new. It is in very good/excellent condition. It would be a waste to send it to the landfill. We will try to give it away, but we'll stop trying after 2-5-15. We will not ship it, so if you want it you'll have to come pick it up. Did I mention that it's FREE!

12V only working when plugged into 30amp

I have a 76 Sovereign. At some point in the past couple of months, not exactly sure when, my 12v stuff won't work if we're not plugged into "shore power" / 30AMP service at an RV park.

So basically, no boondocking.

All of the 12v lights and my new fridge which requires 12v to power the indicator lights on the front of it work, as long as we're plugged into 30amp.

I took the battery to an O'Reilly's and they said it was fine, accepting a charge, etc. Though it may not be getting a charge, or only charging slowly, even when I'm plugged in as I had been plugged in for 12+ hours before I took it there and it was only at 70%.

I'm confused as I didn't think the fridge could even work (the indicator lights anyway) if 12v wasn't working, or at least that's what the Dometic manual says. I have the 12V for the fridge hooked up directly to the same connections as where the battery hooks up to the fuse box. Here's a picture if it helps explain that:

I bought a Multimeter in an attempt to figure out what's going on myself, but I'm not even sure where to start. From what I've read, it sounds like it may be an inverter issue, though I had a new one installed about a year ago...

To be honest I don't even know where that would begin, so any advice on where to start looking, what to start testing, etc. would be GREATLY appreciated.

1974 Airstream Sovereign 31 - Iowa

Title: 1974 Airstream Sovereign 31 - Iowa

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

I have a 74 Airstream 31' Sovereign rear bath camper for sale. It very solid, no leaks, perfect floor as far as I can tell, all furniture is there in good shape except a crack in the bathroom sink deck, about 1 ft to the right of the sink. I have never tried the appliances, or systems. I can only say the previous owners were using it, and told me they all worked, but thet was several years ago. My family was going to use it to restore and modify for using to stay in with our traveling job of assembling grain equipment. We have used a 26' Argosy for many years, which we still love, but wanted to get something bigger. We ended up buying a new camper with a slide out. It doesn't pull as nice as the Argosy, but everyone is happier with the increased space for desk, etc that we have installed in it. We never actually used the Airstream, and would like to sell it to a good home. It still has the clear coat, with some oxidation at a few seams. The Vista windows have the film inside peeling, but other windows are perfect. It has a small dent in rear crest, and a puncture in the under belly just to the side of the hitch. It also has all new brakes supplied still in boxes Please give me a call for further description. If you want to fix up an old Airstream, It is a good one. It has little cut out patches in the rear over the bumper that I was told by last owner were for the company to strengthen the frame due to the rear bath additional weight, in a recall. We can argue over price when we get that far, I'm very agreeable!

How much Por-15?

Can someone give me a ball park as to how much I'll need to do the frame on my 27' Overlander? That stuff is pretty spendy, I don't want to order a gallon if all I need is a quart and a half. Thanks!

Replacing the vinyl on Carefree Awning

Hi all,

Our 66 Ambassador has the original Carefree Awning. The blue vinyl is shot but the mechanics of the awning work great. Can the vinyl be replaced without removing the roller or does the entire assembly have to be removed ? Also, when the awning is extended, it appears (haven't measured exactly yet) to be approx. 5' in width. When I replace the vinyl, can I increase the width without any mods ?

Thanks,

Dan

Newbie, need advice on TV, TT combination...

Hi All,

My wife and I are looking to purchase a new 2015 Airstream 23D trailer but need help from people with more experience and knowledge. We're moving up from a super-lightweight 17' Casita fiberglass trailer (under 2400 lbs) that we sometimes forget is behind us. We thank all who respond.

That said, there are apparently so many variables in the towing of a travel trailer, and we can't come to a conclusion on whether or not we're ok. Here's what we have for a TV:

2013 Ford F150 4x4 XLT Supercab (Ford indicates 9400 lb tow capacity)

3.5L V6 EcoBoost

145" Wheelbase

Electronic 6-speed Automatic Transmission

3.31 Ratio Regular Axle

36 Gallon Fuel Tank

7200 LB GVWR

Trailer Towing Package with sway control and brake controller

Equipment Group 302A

Bak Flip F1 Tonneau Cover

The "Tire and loading" sticker says Occupant/Cargo limit = 1520 lbs.

We almost exclusively camp in campgrounds and very rarely go "off-grid". Including my wife and I, and our two dogs, we're under 400 pounds total. We're looking to do some longer trips, including a 4-month journey to Alaska and back, so we need to be able to carry maybe 500-600 pounds of "stuff" as we travel.

We're planning to purchase the following and need to know if it will all work together:

Equal-i-zer 1000 lb Weight Distribution Hitch (102 lbs itself)

Airstream Flying Cloud 23D (720 lb hitch weight, Base weight = 4761, GVWR = 6000 lbs))

So, can anybody tell us if our truck will safely tow this trailer with this WDH? Even more basic, will the truck handle the AS trailer with any WDH and still allow us to carry the things we need for long trips? If additional information is necessary to help us, please let me know. Again, any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

Going from 50 amps to 30 amps for a 23FB

I am taking delivery of a 2015 23FB this Saturday. The wife and I are down sizing from a 36' 5th wheel which used a 50 amp service.

I have one of those $350 50 amp protection gizmos that I used on the 5th wheel, which by the way saved our butts a few times.

My question is can I used the 50 amp protection gizmo in concert with a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter to feed the AS? OR should I spring for a 30 amp protection gizmo and sell the 50 amp unit on Flee Bay?

Solar Question

Hey guys! I had a question about solar panels. Can you use a portable solar panel not mounted to the Airstream to charge the batteries? I was envisioning using a portable panel that rests on the ground and directly connect it to the battery? Do you have to have a charge controller to prevent battery overcharging? I don't really want to mount panels on my 1979 Tradewind, but would like the benefits of solar. Can you directly connect the panel to the battery?

Holding tank treatment

Last year I purchased a treatment product reviewed in Trailer Life. I had to google the product as the major tv stores did not seem to carry. I have lost the contact information and thus can not find. The product was "grape colored and smell like grape". Can anyone help.. Best product I have used.

Title: 1975 Airstream Argosy 26 - Georgia

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

Fully restored Argosy 26 with lots of amenities. The first Airstreams to have wrap around panoramic windows which let in lots of light and look nice. I have left no system untouched in the improvements made in last few years. Paint stripped off, metal polished with light grey upper surfaces painted with two part Interlux perfection marine epoxy.New Axles, 12 inch electric brakes, new wheels and tires, new air conditioning, stove refurbished, Dometic fridge works well on electric or gas, PEX plumbing throughout, new sinks, new Inverter/converter, Dual golf cart batteries for lots of amp hours, Renogy solar cells and Blue sky systems solar controller. This is a great trailer to boondock in- second AC unit can be easily run on small generator. LED lights inside and out, recently certified aluminum propane tanks with new OPD valves, hardwood laminate flooring, new countertops. Has an extra custom rear bunk so can comfortably sleep 5, re-upholstered cushions with ultraleather and new foam. Last summer it traveleled from Georgia to Colorado, Wyoming and back again and is a very nice comfortable trailer. This is a lighter weight trailer than many of the modern ones and can easily be towed behind most SUVs. Includes sway bar and weight distributing hitch. A great way to get started into the Airstream world without breaking the bank and should provide many years of enjoyment for years to come. Only selling to buy larger trailer for growing family. I have spent over 13k on refurbishment, asking 12,900 or fairly close to it. Pictures provided on request.

Storage Tips

Does anybody have any storage tips? Should I take out my mattress and seat cushions? I'm trying to avoid moisture buildup or damage primarily. Here's the back story and my plan:

I bought my 2015 Intl Sig 25FB in December and have enjoyed hanging out in it and working from it while it's in my driveway. However, my HOA has caught up with me and I have to get it out. I am planning to opt for inside storage that is NOT climate controlled. I was planning to do outside initially but after reading that you can't cover an AS without damaging the skin, I'm just going to do it "right" and baby my baby.

I live in South Carolina so it rarely gets below freezing except overnight and not by much when it does. I had the dealer winterize it so if there's a problem, it's on them. It's probably going to go in for a couple weeks, then out for a trip. Back in for two weeks, out for a few days. Then in again until the end of May when we go live in it for three (3) months.

Any reason why inside storage is a bad idea? Should I leave a window open to help with temperature fluctuations? Thoughts, advice and help are greatly appreciated!
