Hitch parts-what goes on trailer, what on vehicle?

mardi 29 avril 2014

Hello Airstream Forum Members,

We are in the process of learning all about trailers, vehicles, and hitches.

Can someone help me understand what part of the hitch set-up goes on the trailer itself, and what is on the vehicle?

We currently have a 2004 Honda Pilot with a trailer hitch (draw tite) that we have used for a soft ride 4-bike bicycle rack. We have the trailer wire harness (got that when renting a U Haul trailer to take the kids to college.)

So I understand that the other parts of the set up would be the ball, which slides into the hitch on the vehicle. We would need to get the correct size ball for the trailer (we are planning on the 16 Bambi Sport).

So how does the anti-sway part work? Is that added onto the hitch side of the connection or does that go on the trailer itself?

What about trailer brakes? Are those activated by the wire harness? Do all the trailers come with these, or do the trailer breaks need to be added on?

Lastly, if you were to buy a new vehicle (we may need one before we save up enough for the Bambi), what towing features are best to order on the vehicle, and what are best to add aftermarket?

Thanks in advance for your replies!
