Title: 1976 Airstream Argosy 24 - Arizona
I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.
My employer is moving me off the continent and I sadly need to sell my 22 foot '76 Argosy. I am asking $8,500.
My grandfather bought the coach new and the two of us have been the only owners, so I know her entire history. My grandfather ordered a custom unit from Airstream with a unique floor plan - this is a nice bonus because it allows two couples to sleep comfortably or two large tables for entertaining. The coach has resided entirely in California, New Mexico, and Arizona (not counting trips to elsewhere) and is in excellent condition (sun fading is the only issue). This is a unique Airstream - all original but also one-of-a-kind. This is a low-mileage Argosy used for Summer trips to Washington State, two cross-country trips, and dozens of long weekend get-aways.
The custom layout has a rear bathroom, a sofa with dining table opposite the kitchen (that converts into a bed or a small round table) and a front two-bench dining table (that converts into the master bed). I don't know why Airstream didn't adopt this layout for all their 22 footers because it is so flexible. When we are on the road, we normally leave the mid-dining table set up and the front bed set up so we don't have to re-arrange anything to go from sleep mode to drive mode. When it's time to camp, we convert the front bed into the dining table when not sleeping.
We replaced the orange carpet with laminate flooring and replaced the sun damaged curtains, but otherwise the coach is all original. The entire floor is solid and all the appliances are original and work fine. There is no sagging in the rear. The Dura-Torque axles are running just above level, so they still have plenty of life left on them.
I have the original hubcaps, the original service manuals, and the original hitch that will be included. I can also include my brake controller if needed. There is an 8-track player and FM radio that works fine and the TV antenna is in good shape (I even have the original crank). If vintage is your thing, you will be thrilled.
The features and appliances are: Air conditioner, propane furnace, propane/electric refrigerator (switchable), propane hot water heater, shower, toilet, bathroom sink, three burner propane stove and oven, kitchen sink, three-way 12V lights throughout, storage under all the bench seats and overhead storage, coat closet, pantry, storage under the sinks. The hoses, septic connections, wheel chocks, leveling boards, and electrical connections store inside the rear bumper, along with the ramp used to change a tire (you don't need a jack - just drive the good tire onto a ramp to lift the flat tire). The things you will need in your tow vehicle are the leveling jacks (included), the spare tire (included), a lug wrench (included) and a torque wrench (not included) for changing the tires.
The Argosy is excellent for dry camping - most of what we have used her for. Everything works when not plugged into electrical power except the air conditioner which requires more power than the battery can supply. The propane tanks have automatic change-over. The refrigerator and hot water heater both run on propane while driving (if it is exceptionally windy, the hot water heater sometimes blows out while driving). There is one car-sized RV battery to run the water pump and lights when not hooked up - this gets charged while driving or I have a small battery charger if hooked up. I don't have an inverter in the coach because I don't use AC except for the air conditioner or battery charger. The black and gray-water tanks are both in good shape (I changed the gaskets a few years ago and fixed them all up). My wife and I can usually dry-camp for about thee days (even if we both take showers every day) without needing to refill the water tank and dump the sewer tanks. The plumbing is all copper (I know because I replaced much of it after an unexpected freeze in New Mexico) so much of it is new. The bathroom faucet is new but looks like the original (I couldn't find gaskets for the original).
I will include my vintage dishes and cookware if the buyer wants them, along with the very new flannel sheets, blankets, pillows, rugs and towels (shown in the pictures).
I installed a top-of-the-line LP detector and a smoke alarm.
There is a dent in the rear panel and a little bit of unevenness in one of the front panels, but otherwise the body is in good shape.
The axle bearings and electric brakes are in excellent shape. The shocks were replaced in 2011. Included is a good full-sized spare tire. She is fully equipped and ready to roll - the lucky buyer will only need some groceries to take her home and will be fully equipped to camp all the way there.
Full disclosure:
She needs to be painted, the orange trim strip needs new plastic, and some of the window trim is sun faded and cracked and needs to be replaced. The shower trim needs to be replaced. The curtains we made are a little sun faded. The tires are original - I still trust them (I drove all the way to Michigan and back on them two years ago) but they have some surface cracking. The bar that holds the propane tanks down is missing (I have a fabricated bar on there now).
Logistics:
I already sold my tow vehicle and it takes me six hours to get to Kingman from my house, so I will be scheduling occasional showings for very serious buyers only. I will be in Kingman (the Argosy is about 45 minutes outside of Kingman) the weekend of March 7 for a showing if I hear from a serious buyer. I also have more pictures that I can email and don't mind answering questions.
If you are looking for a completely original vintage coach that needs a paint job and some minor TLC but is 100% functional, fully equipped, and ready to go, this might be the best deal you will ever find. The coach weighs 3800 lbs. and was designed to be pulled with a '70s vintage car. Unlike newer trailers, you will not need a monster tow vehicle.
If you have a suitably rated hitch attachment on your vehicle and a round-pin 7-way plug wired for electric brakes, you are ready to go adventuring. I will include the brake controller if you need one and can help wire it in if necessary.
She has been a much loved and well cared for member of the family and needs a good home.
