Do You Need to Dump the Black Tank After Driving Home?

dimanche 30 novembre 2014

Stupid question.

Preparing to winterize for the first time. Dumped both tanks at the RV park. Flushed the black water tank pretty good and waited until it was empty before going to the grey water tank and hitting the road.

Started driving home. Took a break from driving and thought "I bet there is a tiny bit of water still in the tanks. I wonder if I pulled the lever now if I could totally empty them". I figured like an ounce or two of water might come out.

I made the mistake of pulling the black water first and dirty water started flowing out. Definitely more than just a few ounces was in there. Fortunately I stopped it right away and then went to an RV park and redumped the black waste water again. Not sure how much was in there but more than I thought.

So is there like a trap in the black water and this waste in the trap got dislodged from driving and this what was coming out? Should we always dump after driving home and things get sloshed around? I can't totally figure out why if I felt the tank was empty at the RV park originally after driving there was some waste in there.

I'm not sure what exactly was going on.

Generator exhaust get inside?

Hi,

Hubby and I are thinking about making the plunge to RVing into an Interstate. I am chemically sensitive and can't stand staying in hotels and rentals with pesticides, furniture polish, strong bathroom cleaners, etc. We like the Airstream Interstate quality and found a 2011 that has no odors and seemed out-gassed. But... I would like to run the AC at night. Noticed the generator exhaust is right outside. I cough just going down the highway behind vehicles if we don't use the recirculate button. Any thoughts on if that generator exhaust will stay outside or leak in? Thanks!

Sewer Solution Extension Question

I recently purchased a Sewer Solution and need to run it about 30' to the sewer line. I was going to purchase a 25' 3/4" hose, but do not see how to connect it to the PVC fixture on the end of the 10' hose that comes with the Sewer Solution. Any suggestions?

water tank valves

I have recently purchased a 2012, 25' Eddie Bauer and I'm perplexed about draining the fresh water tanks. The first time I drained the tank, I simply opened two, red handled valves near the roadside and accessed between the tires. Now when I tried to drain the full tanks, I opened the same valves and nothing but drips came out. It wasn't until I turned on the pump that it forced water out of the tanks. I'm confused and wonder what I'm missing. Why won't the valves simply drain when I open them?

What You Include?

Hi .... we are now full-timing and wondering what many of you take with you in terms of life-style amenities. Such might be ... do you carry an outdoor carpet, do you carry more chairs than the number you are (1 or 2 or 3)? Do you carry a picnic table .... or a picnic table set. Do you carry roll up table(s)? Right now ... when we do our first boondock ... we will have nothing more than a charcoal hibachi and two chairs .......... oh ... and two generators. Maybe that is enough ... suggestions? I think we would benefit from a picnic set, but the designated driver thinks we just need a roll=up aluminum table. Look forward to hearing what the experienced and the pros do. thx

Beartooth Highway

I am considering this roadway east to west, from Red Lodge, MT into Yellowstone mid July next year. I am pulling a 30' Bunkhouse with a diesel Excursion.

I can go around, but I hear this is a spectacular route, a real challenge to RVs however.

Does anyone have any experience with this route.

Thank you.

Looking for 2015 FB23 Fuse Plan/List

We blew the fuse on the power jack and are having a tough time replacing it. It is a 30a, 250 v fuse. Lordco in Vancouver has something similar rated at 35 a, 250 v. Would we be silly to take that?

I can't find a plan of the fuses on our 2015 FB23. I am sure there a lots of them and I would like to get a bunch of spares for when we are out on the road. Any pointers welcome!

Thanks

Gray water dump valve in bambi...

My Bambi only has one waste tank (black water tank). As you can imagine this is quickly filled up from shower and sink usage.

After reading many of the threads about the pros & cons of dumping gray water I've decided that I'd like to install an outlet valve for both the shower and sink. I'll primarily use this on my property. I'm okay with this...especially because California is currently in a drought and I can use bio-degradable soap.

I'm not looking to debate the pros/cons of dumping gray (touchy subject, I know).

I'm wondering - has anyone retrofitted a Bambi to make it possible to do so? If so I'd love to hear from them...

Rewiring Kill Switch

I'm thinking of rewiring my kill switch. I havent verified it is actually wired this way, but the schematic in the manual says it is in series with the power feed to the DC Distribution and Fuse Panel. When it is off, the converter and the propane detector are still connected to the battery. Now, when I put my trailer away for a while I have to get out a wrench, open up the battery box, and disconnect the negative cable to avoid battery drain by the propane detector. When plugged in, the converter is always connected to the battery. If I put the kill switch in series with the battery, when thrown everything in the trailer will be off. When storing all i have to do is throw the kill switch. Any reason not to do this?

Another curious design- there are 50A breakers between the battery bussbar and the battery and between the battery bussbar and the power panel feed, but the 50A converter feeds the bussbar and thus both the power panel and the battery through a 30A breaker. How does that make sense? Again, not verified with actual wiring, but that is what the schematic shows.

Thanks,

Al

Jeep Grand Cherokee or ??

We just bought our first AS...a 2003 22 foot International. We pulled it from the San Francisco bay area (where purchased) to our home, north of Seattle, with our 2011 V6 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.

The trailer was empty for the most part with very little water in the fresh water tank and a couple of sleeping bags and clothes for the 2 day return trip.

The Jeep is rated for 5,000 GVWR with a GTW of 500 lbs. My understanding is that the 2003 22 ft International is 4,250 lbs dry (6,000 lbs wet) with a tongue weight of 600 lbs...but GTW likely less when dry, right?

The Jeep did great. We added a P3 braking system before we pulled the trailer. The hitch system included weight distribution and sway bars. The trailer is double axle, unlike the newer 22 footers, which are single axle, from what the dealer told us...which is one reason why we bought the older trailer.

My question is: From what I know and have been told, the Jeep GC Laredo V6 is not the right tow vehicle for the long term. Once we load up the trailer, add the dog, etc. we are likely going to be pushing the 6,000 lbs GVWR listed for the trailer.

So, does everyone feel the newer Jeep GC Limited V8 or above would be a good upgrade or, as the former owner had, should we look at the Toyota Sequoia?...or another SUV brand?? My wife would like to stay with an SUV for the dogs, etc as opposed to a truck.

We realize there will be a wide range of answers but look forward to your input on the best SUV's given the specs for the 22 foot International AS.

Old caravan needs help

Hi, I am a new member. I recently bought a property on the Sunshine coast of BC and there is an old airstream that was left on the property.

I am looking for information to determine if it's worth renovating...

there are several information plaques on the body: land yacht, globe trotter; Santa Fé Springs, Ca.Wally Byam's caravan with 394 in big red letters.

The exterior has some dings and there have been a few repairs done with sheet aluminum and pop rivets...

The interior still has the bathroom in the back but otherwise everything has been taken out.

I am looking for any info that readers can tell me about this caravan; year of manufacture, approx value as is and feasibility of bringing it back to service as a backyard camper for friends visiting in the summer...

Thank you

Hot Water Heater

This has me perplexed . . .

The heater is a 6-gallon Atwood gas with electric ignition, model G6A-8E. When I switched on the hot water heater (switch is in the bathroom), I hear the ignition and the light on the switch goes out. A few moments later, the light comes on again. I checked to see that there is propane in the tanks - there is, and the stove works as does the refrigerator. Given the delay before the light goes out, I switched on the heater and ran to the outside. I saw that there was in fact ignition and that there was flame, but there was still a clicking sound of the igniter as though it doesn't recognize that there is actually a flame. Then it all shuts off. It would seem that the thermocouple is malfunctioning, but I can't see where it is located, as the only wire to where the flame is burning is the igniter.

Any ideas?

Saniware Function

Good day folks. I have an original '65 Overlander with the Saniware toilet. I know it is long since out of repair parts production but I'm just curious as to its original function.

Pressing the foot lever opens the flapper but it doesn't appear to introduce water in the process and yet there is a water connection to the toilet as well as an adjacent spray wand on the "bench." There doesn't appear to be a "button" or lever on the vent assembly.

I'm just curious how it worked originally.

Thanks!

Change from group 24 batteries to Trojan T105's

Good day all. To anyone that has made the change from standard 12v group 24

batts to the trojan T105's. What terminals on the battery did you go with and did you change the standard auto cable terminals to lug type? The trojan web page shows an auto type terminal with a bolt that extends out the middle of it but will the auto cable terminal fit flush so the bolt can be used as a connection between the two batteries? Any advice would be welcome thank you all. Rand

Water leak above dump handle?

Hello guys,

My 2015 27 fb eddie bauer seems to have a slow drip coming from above the gray water dump handle. It is also starting to drip from the led light gasket between the dump handles.

There is copper plumbing that extends up and into the body just above the gray water dump valve and it's coming from there. I looked under the closet to see the upper portion of the pipe and it's dry.

I'm located outside of vegas and I'm fulltiming. It has dropped below freezing a few times. I use the furnace on cold nights to keep the pipes warm. I'm plugged into city water all the time and use a heated water hose.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Battery Disconnect for Short Term Storage

I'm 10 days and 2000 miles out on my first trip in my 2014 25" Flying Cloud. It has been an interesting experience, with a handful of newbie mistakes, but so far, so good. Camped in 10 degree weather in the NM mountains, try doing that with a tent!!!!

Changing circumstances dictate that I fly back from CO to NC for 12 days and then back to CO to continue the trip. I am planning on winterizing and storing the trailer and putting it in short term outdoor storage. The low temps here will be single digit for one night and then in the 30's for the next week or so. After that, who knows?

Would you experienced air streamers advice disconnecting the batteries given the above conditions? I COULD remove them, but would need to impose upon relatives to store the batteries in their garage(s).

I have the anti-freeze winterizing procedures down pretty pat (having winterized and de-winterized twice on the trip), but any other advice for this 12 day period would be appreciated.

Florida Keys - Booking a Dec Trip

Our biggest vacation of the year occurs in December because the entire family has 2 full weeks off. We've always wanted to go to the Keys, but haven't ever booked it early enough to get a spot. This time, I'm planning way ahead for Dec 2015! I'm hoping for some advice from those of you who have done this before. First, where's the best camping in the keys with at least electric and water that has great swimming right by the campsite? Lastly, what's the best was to book it? Most sites seem to open reservations up 11-12 months ahead of time, but is there a technique to ensure I book a great campsite for at least 10 consecutive days? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Toilet lever feels stuck... operator error or problem?

samedi 29 novembre 2014

This is probably a really dumb question, but since I don't know the answer I'm going to ask it anyway!

The toilet in my 1978 Argosy has a lever with another small lever attached to it. I'm no stranger to flushing an RV toilet, having lived in a 5th wheel for the last couple of years... but pushing on this lever does nothing. It won't push down, it won't come up, it just feels stuck.

Is this something broken, is it somehow locked, or am I just losing my mind?

Also, is there a good place to find a replacement sprayer for the toilet, as well as a new shower head that will fit the space?

Winterizing valve

Winterizing valve below the wardrobe

Our owner’s manual says both the 27' & 25' front bedroom Classic models provide exterior water service via a hose bib located fore on the RS, DS, in an exterior under-belly water connection locker.*

This location is an unheated area can freeze. According to our owner's manual, an interior shut-off valve exists below the wardrobe closet floor.*

I have looked and tested the only valve accessible in that sub-closet location. The line appears to go forward toward the utility locker, or to the shower. However it has no effect on the output of the exterior hose bib fitting or the shower. This is possibly due to a meaningless tubing setup bypassing the valve. In the absence of additional valves, the by-pass around the valve of an assemblage of white tubing & fittings makes this valve useless.*Is the valve defective & non-functional? Or, am I reading the tubing incorrectly?

The lines are joined by "high tech" ferrules. I have no desire to purchase such a tool & supplies.

Any suggestions?

What was that noise?

Just spent a wonderful week camping in the new AS at San Augustine COE park in the Texas piney woods:) All went really well (especially the campfire Thanksgiving turkey!) but we were awakened early this morning by a loud bang. At first I thought it was just an acorn falling on the roof, then heard the same sound again about an hour later. Sounded like a loud pop coming from the front left side (near the water heater maybe). The water heater was not on. Propane was on but furnace wasn't running at the time. It happened again after we woke up and it was definitely not acorns! Sounded almost like metal popping. Any ideas what could have caused the sound?

Wifi Repeater Feeding Traditional Router

OK, I should start by saying I'm an engineer and have lots of gadgets. I'm prepping my EB 27FB for a yearlong trip where I'll be doing work remotely. The goal is to keep my Apple Airport Time Capsule broadcasting my current SSID that all my devices connect to. I don't want to have to re-configure every device if I change from my mifi to a campground wifi signal.

I was going to get the following and use in repeater mode: Securifi Almond

In repeater mode, it would re-broadcast the signal it's getting, which I could care less about. I was going to take the cat5 cable connection from it and plug it in as the internet connection to my existing router. The Almond has a touchscreen, so going from the mifi to a new campground wifi would be pretty easy (no need to dig out laptop and connect to router and change settings) and all of my devices in the trailer wouldn't know the difference (always connected to the Apple router).

I'm not sure if anyone does anything similar and/or if campground wifi sites allow people to connect a repeater.

Anyone see a flaw in this plan?

Hi All

This is now at my home my problem is that the Vin number is as follows

I 27 T 9 J 296 now talking with the technician at air stream he says it is a 1969 by the ser. number but everything i found on line concurs with what he says. He then ask if it had two hings or a single hinge i told him that it had two hinges. The info that i got from all of you looks more like it is a 1979 with flip handles on the door and round corners on the windows. Now here is the kicker. I just got the Owners manual and it says it is a 1974. Who is right???

Mobius with Korg PadKontrol?

Anyone using Mobius with Korg PadKontrol? I just learned about Mobius and I'm trying to set it up to do hands free guitar looping. I was trying to find a Behringer FCB1010 but no luck, so I'll use the PadKontrol either with my feet, or with my hands.

Mobius looked quite complicated (and my knowledge of MIDI is sparse). I'm definitely going to figure this out from the manual, but if you have any pointers, I'd appreciate it.

Just to be clear, the critical thing I'm trying to do is control the start/stop of recording and move on to next track kind of thing. I assume it's possible to perform these functions using the pads on PadKontrol, but not sure how to hook it up to Mobius.

Or if you know of an easier way to do guitar looping with Mobius (maybe some other MIDI device that I haven't heard of?), please let me know.

Dealer Correspondence

Following, for whatever interest it may be, is a copy of my correspondence with the dealer who recently sold my my new Interstate (which, incidentally, I am rapidly learning to love).

Charlie Power

Vice-President

Holiday World of Katy

28909 Katy Freeway

Katy, TX 77494

Dear Mr. Power:

This responds to your recent, undated letter, in which you say that I shall soon be receiving a questionnaire about your firm’s performance. This letter will serve as my response; I won’t be responding separately to your questionnaire. This seems to me the best way to establish a good working relationship with Holiday World – a relationship that will be necessary to secure good continued maintenance of the unit.

Your firm handled all the essential steps in my acquisition of my Interstate efficiently and effectively. Price negotiations were straight-forward, financing arrangements were satisfactory, and the unit was ready (more or less) for me to pick up on the agreed schedule. Beyond the essentials, however, I think most buyers would have felt, as I did, that they were a nuisance intruding on your staff, who had a lot better things to do than to deal with me.

On pick-up day I rented a car to drive to Katy, and your salesperson kindly picked me up at the car rental office and drove me to your location, where he left me seated on a stool next to your reception desk until it was convenient for your folk to deal with me. After about a half hour your no-doubt very capable technician took me to my unit and gave me a very comprehensive, and very quick, introduction. I have since come to regret that I didn’t insist on repeating myse3lf his actions so I’d have better memory of all he sought to teach me. I still can’t find the breaker box and main switch. It doesn’t seem to be where the Airstream book says it should be. I can hear the main switch operate when I actuate its solenoid, however, so when I have a helper I should be able to track it down by its sound.

After my brief orientation the technician took me to a coffee room where I cooled my heels for another half hour until your finance officer was ready to see me. My eventual interaction with him was direct, straight-forward, and in every way satisfactory. I now learn, however, that one of the required bits of paper was overlooked; I have just returned from the FedEx pick up point where I sent the signed document back to you.

After finishing the paper work I wandered unaccompanied to the back of your building and found my Interstate parked nearby with every imaginable electrical device turned on. I did my best to turn them all off, but later, when I found the house batteries run down flat, discovered that I had overlooked the two refrigerators. The drive home was pleasant and uneventful. That is because I am an experienced truck driver. I’d imagine. however, that a buyer who has never driven anything bigger than a Honda Accord might do with a bit of orientation before being turned loose in five-o’clock freeway traffic in a five-ton vehicle.

Your sales person promised me during our negotiations that he would provide me, gratis, what he called a “starter kit.” The essential components of this kit were to be a water hose and a 30 a. – 15 a. adapter. I assumed when I left your place that the kit had been put aboard, but when I looked for the adapter so I could recharge my flat batteries I found that it was missing. Your people had given me the name of a young lady to call if I had a problem, so I called her. After a few minutes checking she called back and told me I hadn’t paid for and therefore was not due said starter kit. I must admit I became a bit frustrated and angry at that point. I called the sales person and asked him if he recalled promising me a starter kit. He said, “No,” and, to contain my frustration and avoid behaving unprofessionally, I quickly but politely terminated the conversation. The next day I received an email from the person saying that he now recalled his promise. I responded that it was too late; I had already purchased the stuff. I must say that I was surprised that at no time did the sales person apologize for his oversight or offer any sort of compensation for his error.

A couple of days later a young lady from your place called me to find out if I was satisfied with my transaction. I told her about my problem with the starter kit and, to my great satisfaction, she actually apologized and offered to send it to me. I thanked her but told her that I’d already bought the stuff. She did not offer to reimburse me. She did say, however, that she would inform “top management” about my difficulties. I gather from the fact that you didn’t mention it in your undated letter either that you are not a member of top management, or that she didn’t inform you about it, or that it just didn’t seem to you to be important enough to mention.

In the past few days I have driven the unit about 1000 miles, and I finally checked inside a box your folk left in the back. To my surprise it contained a carpet for the driver’s compartment. I installed it. The thing looks a lot better. But I have to comment that that. too, seems a sign of your firm’s lack of interest. Have you ever bought a car where installing the carpet was a do-it-yourself project? I must have bought fifty cars in my lifetime and this is the first time I’ve had that experience.

You will realize, of course, as I do, that all my little complaints are trivial, and don’t really amount to a hill of beans. The only reason I articulate them in such detail is because they cause me to worry about how much attention I may receive from your firm when issues of maintenance and repair come up. I’d be very grateful for your assurance, in writing, so I can wave it around when necessary, that my maintenance and repair needs will receive at least as much attention as those of your other customers.

Yours sincerely,

Rubber Sheet Flooring

Hi all,

I just purchased and received 30' of rubber, rolled sheet flooring from Rubber-Cal. (I actually purchased via Overstock due to substancial savings.) I first ordered a 5' part to perform a "sniff test". Yes, it smelled like new tires but after a week, it disipated. And it flattend out very nicely. The dogs have been racing over it for about a month - leaving surface scratches. Well, not really scratches as they don't penetrate the rubber, but look more like scuffs or mars. I think they'd come out if I buffed the flooring. But I'm not about to add more labor to the upkeep of the tray'la. The scuffs aren't visible while standing - only on seated inspection. So, I like the look and watched the videos the mfg has on installation. Looks easy enough. They also say the pattern will match where I need to join (as it's just 4' wide).

"Diamond-Grip" Rolled Rubber Matting

I recall another member using this material and mentioning that they placed a thin (foam?) underlayment. I hadn't really planned to do that but maybe it would help a bit with insulation, smoothing of the wood subfloor and provide some very minimal cushion.

I went to Home Depot to look at underlayment. Found 2mm foam and 2.4mm foil backed something - both for laying under floating floors. Then the sales person mentioned maybe just placing thicker, fiberglass based vinyl flooring under. Hummmmmm - now I really don't know which, if any, I should use.

Do any of you have an suggestions/advice?

Cold weather tailgating

Hi all. As you may know I'm a new owner of a 2014.5 lounge ext. I'm going to practice tailgate today at our neighborhood Turkeybowl gathering. Temperature is a balmy 28 rising to 40. I'll be running the furnace a bit to provide a "warming hut". Do I need to run the generator or just keep an eye on battery level. And at what point should I crank up the generator?

Paper plates or real plates? What about utensils and glassware?

Do you use disposable plates, cups and utensils or do you use the real deal and wash after every use? Lots of great sales going on now for Black Friday so I wondering if I should equip the AS like home or buy picnic supplies. How have you outfitted your cupboards?

Cant figure out how to connect my AS to power

I admit that I haven't read the manual as I have not received it yet. I do have the trailer now and would like to take it out next weekend. Hopefully the owners manual will arrive by then but in the meantime, I have a few real newbie questions.

How do I connect a generator to my AS? My AS has two male connectors - one on street side and the other behind the propane tanks. Each connector has three flat blades that probably takes locking plugs? Regardless, my new generator only has 120 VAC outlets. There are no cords that came with my AS so where can I buy such a cord? I intend to go to Camping World tomorrow. Would they carry that? Does the cord have a name?

Thanks for your help.

Help me meake up my mind - tonneau cover or camper shell?

Seriously cannot make up my mind between a tonneau or shell for my TV. Both are on sale for Black Friday but of course the shell costs quite a bit more. The tonneau I am considering is rigid aluminum/plastic that folds back in sections. The shell I am considering is plain white but still costs a pretty penny. I want security and utility.

Which cover do you have and do you wish you went the other? Thanks!

Interstate LP Gas

Just had the LP filled by Uhaul. Now I cannot get any appliance to work. The gas is on, checked the fuses, turned the exterior LP switch on. Tried to bleed the lines by lighting the stove. I cannot get any gas to come out of stove, generator and furnace do not work. Can't even smell gas. Is there a toggle which might have been flipped? Should I try and bleed the line using the exterior pressure release valve? How do you do that? Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks

Shopping and asking questions =)

Hi,

Just joined and looking and reading to get some questions answered.

My sister and I are looking to spend a year or so cycling across USA well really my sister is more the rider than me my butt hurts after 10 miles. So im driving since i have lots of experience towing.

We looked at 5th wheels as that has been my experience in towing but when we looked at comfort and resale we decided we are going with Airstream 25-27 FB cloud.

Im stuck on stuff like, what to pack that's small and can store? cooking cleaning etc. I found a bunch of lists and am getting that part handled.

I'm more concerned with safety and security stuff like

1) do you need a surge protector to plug into various camp sites?

2) should we add solar? if so how much do we need, (mechanical and electrical not my thing) or

3) do we need a small generator instead? are their any quiet ones?

4) locks, how good are the locks on the trailer door and on the storage compartment

5) how can i keep them safe at nite (I guess we can always bring them inside but that isnt a great solution for long term, and i have a recumbent bike so im not sure if we could get it in the door and we will have other ppl join us from time to time.... over crowding possible )

6) how do you secure your valuables like computers, laptops etc when not in the trailer?

7) Electrical, wifi, internet connection, need to keep my internet business up and running a few hours a week to pay for things sooooo if i attached the receivers and boosters i need how do I do that without drilling holes without ruining integrity of the airstream skin (did I mention not very mechanical ;)

So I don't even know where to start on some of it. Ideas, suggestions, point me in the right direction greatly appreciated.

(we are towing with f250 diesel cus i like power =) going up hill, i think its an inverse function of how slow i cycle uphill

Ty for your help!

AIRSTREAM NEWBIES listen up... toughest learning curve

There are one... or more... toughest tasks to learn as a new Airstream owner.

My first experience at towing was at the age of 7, maybe 8 years old. My 5 year old brother in a red wagon being pulled by a rope tethered to my tricycle. It was my apprenticeship to my first Airstream in 2006. This first attempt did not work out very well and the "braking system" was still primitive and lacking. I am much, much older and not the wiser for it today.

Now looking back at my last eight years of towing A trailer, there is a check list of the most difficult to the easiest skills required to be a competent Tow Vehicle "Operator" attached to a... Trailer, any trailer. Those of you with a John Deere riding mower and pulling a trailer full of mulch and garden tools can be the best training a Newbie Airstream Owner can practice in your front yard.

My first mile pulling an Airstream from the dealership was full of doubt and not knowing... what to expect. Especially when I made a wrong turn, before the highway in Denver, and found myself in a crowded parking lot for an apartment complex. This was within five minutes of watching the Service Representative waving... goodbye... Newbie. Be safe. If the sweat was not enough, getting into an immediate skill deprivation with a trailer does cloud the pride of ownership to... WHY? But, I managed to get out, find the second right turn onto I-470 South.

My number one by the greatest margin is.... BACKING UP A TRAILER into the parking space at the RV parking lot. Had I the John Deere riding lawn more and utility trailer to practice backing up, I would have had a clue how. How to back up, looking into the side mirror and getting the "hang of it". The riding lawn mower with utility trailer is even more difficult to master. One mistake and you are jackknifed at 90 degrees... plus some. Pull ahead, back up. Pull ahead... repeat until you figure it out. Well, I did it with a 23 foot trailer, which remarkably is EASIER to back up than the riding mower practice course. Much easier.

So... I put backing up MY number one most difficult for a Newbie to learn.

(1) Backing up

(2) Entering a gasoline station... wisely to get IN and to get OUT

(3) Learning that going UP a dip is easier than going DOWN into a dip in the road.

What advice can you give to any Newbie towing a trailer? How did you master this difficulty? Did you have some way to practice, BEFORE pulling an expensive shiny aluminum fuselage made in Jackson Center, Ohio.

This is dedicated to Ted and Kathy in Littleton, Colorado with their FIRST AIRSTREAM, but also their first experience going from Point A to Point B with his wife and my wife riding in the back seat talking non stop AND Ted driving with me... wide eyed and bushy tailed on THEIR maiden voyage in heavy Denver, Colorado traffic. Ted did a wonderful job. The ladies enjoyed their swapping... some kind of information, while Ted was getting first hand everything you would want to know and what to watch out for.... look out!

This little story is for them to remember their maiden voyage and also how my wife and I felt on our first wrong turn and many more to follow over the years. Now as seasoned Airstreamers, we have brought another couple on line and on their way to help the next Newbies on their maiden voyage.

Our "wrong turns" today have a totally different name. It is called... BOONDOCKING. When Ted and Kathy are ready... we will be there to help them on their way to getting lost, as well.

electric brake wiring?

For our 1967 Safari I am replacing TV to trailer wiring as well as brakes & axle, among other items. The new brake wire has been routed to the brakes but then I found a second wire to each brake, assume a common ground. I've anchored the common ground wire to the frame but is it necessary to also have a direct ground wire connection to each brake?

Advice would be appreciated!

New 1995 Excellla 34' front kitchen owner

Just wanted to say Hi. I have just acquired our next vacation on wheels. I am new to the Airstream community, but not new to camping in general. I first had a 1984 SOB 34'. I then bought a 2009 SOB 36' with 2 slideouts, but it was proving to be a real "SOB" in another way. The quality just wasn't there. I knew that keeping it long term was not an option. I had been researching getting a 34' Airstream, but hadn't found any affordable or even in Ohio. I just happened to drive by a storage lot, 10 miles from home, that had a 1995 with a for sale sign. It wasn't advertised anywhere. I would say that was fate. The owner was currently in Hospice, and it was being sold by his son. I just had to convince my wife to buy it, as I still had the 1984 and 2009 still at home. I cleaned up the 84 and posted it for sale, and then was able to rescue the Excellla from the storage lot. It will need a little work, starting with replacing the sagging padded ceiling. I am also going to replace the big closet and China cabinet thing with a couple of bunk beds. The exterior will need some of the stripes replaced. All four of the awnings though look new. I will be using the knowledge collected here at this site for help along the way. So "thank you" in advance.

Sprinter avoid chicken tax

In case you didn't know:

Sprinters are built in Dusseldorf, Germany completely assembled and tested. They are then disassembled with workers stripping out drivetrains and fuel systems. Vehicle bodies are shipped on one ship, the other parts are shipped on a second ship. Once they arrive in Charleston they are trucked to Ladson, S.C. where they are reassembled with the drivetrains and fuel systems installed in the van they were originally taken from. Bolts and other hardware that should only be torqued once are replaced with new German parts. Each van is fully tested before being sent to a dealer or up fitter (such as Airstream). Total time to reassemble the van is about three to four hours.

Why? To avoid a 25 percent chicken tax.

Television Commercials with Airstreams

I could not find a dedicated thread to just TV (television) commercials that (secondarily) show Airstreams to the general public. I saw a Lexus commercial several weeks ago (only one time) on a U.S. TV station. It was showing their new SUV model towing around an Airstream. In one prominent scene the camera is showing the Lexus coming towards the camera and the letters "Airstream" are prominently visible above and behind the Lexus. :) Unfortunately I cannot find any web video of it.

The following commercial has been playing regularly over the last month on Ontario, Canada, stations for the Canadian Lotto 649. I've seen it at least 15x. One night they showed it 6x in a couple hours. When my wife saw it first she said excitedly, "There is this lottery commercial where they show two Airstreams!" Couldn't wait to see it!

The message of course is that "IF" you win the jackpot, you can live your dreams! What else, but using an Airstream for this? In the past "winners" have been shown living the dream on yachts.

I was fascinated to know where in Canada is this scenery so did some research. Answer...it is NOT in Canada! It was shot in Croatia, and dubbed back in Canada!! Go figure! Apparently, Croatia is a European hotbed of RV activity.

Enjoy!

We took a peek at the new Grand Tour while in the dealership to pick up our 2014 AI after some service work. The Grand Tour has a wonderful screen that fits the entire side door opening. We asked if it would be possible to order one for our unit, but were told they are not available. We assumed the openings are the same, but could be wrong on that. Two years ago I just removed the drain plug, and let the water flow out, figuring that the small amount of water, and the shape of the tank would prevent the tank from cracking. Then I got worried that water might be in the lower tank outlet. Sorry if this is old news

Storing Your Interstate In or Outside

mercredi 26 novembre 2014

Hi all

I live near San Francisco

Moderate weather

On waiting list for inside storage including at the Airstream dealership in Fairfield, CA.

I can keep at my home but my guess is that storing inside us best.

Any comments?

Thanks

Newby

We recently purchased our beauty and wanted to take it on the road before we forget most of what was told to us by the seller. My husband and I have have no prior experience with a travel trailer. (Which makes it very interesting Hehe). We've been playing with it in our front yard for over a week now. I haven't given it any thought until today, when I was about to start stocking our refrigerator, that I realize I don't know how to. It seems a little like I would be able to find info on how to stock a refrigerator to keep things from breaking while on the road, but to my surprise I was unable to find any information here or on Google which leaves me to wonder why I'm the only one that is having issues stocking the refrigerator. :) any suggestions? Pictures? Experiences? They would like to share. 💭💭

Quick Fix Solar for Boondocking ?

This is likely a question for lewster or you other electrically educated types. I have available to borrow a solar panel (panels?) that is mounted in an adjustable frame and an attached "controller." The panel puts out 40+ watts and the "controller" has an on/off switch, a meter, and two leads marked POS(+) and NEG(-) under the heading BATTERY.

If I take this boondocking can I charge my batteries by hooking the POS to the 12V pin of the TT umbilical (11 o'clock pin, looking at the face) and the NEG to the ground pin (5 o'clock pin, looking at the face). Or, is this an inexpensive way to fry a perfectly good TT - or at least it's batteries?

The alternative, as you can imagine, is lugging along my Genset and gasoline - noisy, smelly and way too heavy for my back.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Problem Drawers

The two drawers in my hanging wardrobe have a habit of overcomming their latchs and slaming into the door on sharp turns knocking the door open. There is about a 2" gap between the inside of the closed door and the drawer fronts. As a temperary measure we stuffed a towel into the gap so the drawers didn't move but perhaps someone could suggest a bit more elegant fix?

Thanks in advance.

What's with the Pink Flamingos?

Just curious.

I'm waiting for my new Airstream to arrive ready to start this journey and I noticed the Pink Flamingo obsession.

What's up with that?

Mice

Hi all,

There are numerous posts that deal with mice in the trailer and motorhome, but what about your tow vehicle.

I can't keep them from getting into my engine compartment and eating the insulation off the "Firewall".

I was wondering if any of you have had that problem and what you did about it. I thought there might be some kind of spray that could be applied directly to the firewall insulation that would discourage them from tearing it apart, but I have not seen anything produced commercially.

Thanks,

Henry

ABQ 2015 Balloon Rally

I heard today the 2015 balloon rally will not be decided until the IBT in January. Has anyone heard anything? I was in the process of setting up reservation for a caravan and was told to put my plans on hold.

What's your dream tow vehicle?

Mine doesn't exist, but it would be a new suburban with a duramax and Alison trans.

Need advice! Buying 1971 Overlander

Hello everyone! This is my first post. I'm new to Airstreams and RVing in general, but I've fallen in love with the idea of owning one of my own. I've looked at quite a few over the past few months and come across this one two blocks from my house! She wants $8000. I've looked at it 3 times, each time coming back to the forum for guidance... Here's what I've discovered.

All original everything, nothing has been updated, but it was used frequently by the owner before this one. The owner that has it now has allowed it to sit in front of her furniture store for the past year. Two tires are flat, appear to have dry rot. The fridge needs a new gasket. Missing propane tanks, hookup appears in good condition. The interior is super clean, no smell! Even with original green shag carpet. A few items of concern... I jumped on the bumper and the entire trailer moved, so there doesn't seem to be any evidence of rear end sep, but I'm not totally convinced... I'll have to tear out the carpet to be sure, but I didn't see any apparent signs of floor damage or soft spots. There's definitely been some leaking in the rear compartment. Opened that up and found some rot, but the flooring directly under the toilet/ bathtub appear in good shape... I feel like I'll probably be overpaying at $8k, but I have been looking for a while and this one is in the best shape I've seen with others asking $6-$7500 in far worse condition. I cannot find a single rivet missing and the exterior/windows are in fantastic shape, some minor dents on the bumper. No sign of rust on bumper or hitch.

I am expecting to buy new axle, replace gasket, possibly fridge. I'd like to completely renovate interior eventually. I'm located in Charleston, SC. If like to have it looked at by a professional... Any suggestions?Again, I'm a complete novice, so any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!! -Ashley

Here are a few pics: not the best, she's been using it as a storage unit so hard to see some stuff.

Towed vehicle with a winch- how can I do this?

I am the new owner of a 396XL and I want to tow a Jeep Wrangler. I live very near Roadmaster so I called them up and they told me that they do not make a plate for a Jeep which has either modified bumpers or a winch on the front.

I have yet to buy my Jeep but was really thinking of having a winch on the front. Are there any tow bars that allow for this with the vehicle towed with 4 wheels down or will I need to get a dolly or trailer for this???

Also, any recommendations on your favorite (or best) towed vehicle auxiliary braking system?

Thanks

Dave

Streamline's frame shell relationship

I'm just waiting my Streamline 28' from Indiana and wondering some things, for examples about the way its own frame is connected to the shell. I read about the AS' c-channel, some say quite different compared to Streamline's system. Thanks in advance for any notice from you

1970 Airstream Ambassador 29 - Ohio

Title: 1970 Airstream Ambassador 29 - Ohio

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

1970 airstream, had some floor rot in the back so I had it repaired at PS trailer in Helena Ohio. They specialize in Airstream repair and refurbishing. When I had that repaired I also had them add a grey water tank and paint the back part of the frame. So there is no roting floor or any frame separation, and you have a grey water tank that empties out the side. They said the rest of the frame was in good shape. It has some dents by the door and end panels that happened about 15 years ago. Installed a new awning last year, hot water heater replaced about 5 years ago, tires about 4 years old. Inside is mostly original. Refridgerator is a apartment model but fits nice. Floor repair was done last year and has been stored indoors since then.

Thank you,

Mike Mueller

AC Replacement for 1975 Safari

Alas, it's time to replace the air conditioner on my 23' 1975 Safari. Any advice on the best 13,500 BTU unit to purchase?

I've heard good things about the Coleman being a good fit for the Airstream, but it's so darned tall. I think the proportions could be really off on such a small trailer.

The Dometic / Geotherm is lower profile, which I prefer, but only if all else is equal.

I won't be doing this install myself.

Thanks, Airstreamers! You are a wonderful resource.

Waterless toilet??

Has anyone used a Lavco Dry Flush waterless toilet? I thought this may be a good solution on the Bambi Sport given the combo grey/black tank. Any ideas?

Pre purchase inspection advice wanted

Argosy owners, I salute you.

I'm considering 1988 Argosy Squarestream ('29). I wonder if you can suggest any specific things to look for during an inspection. We own a '63 Globetrotter, so I'm somewhat familiar with these trailers. I know about axles, for instance. Folks seem to love their Argosy trailers, and they seem to be a bargain, compared to their shinier brothers. Any Achilles heels or issues I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts! Cheers, Bryan

Cell (4G) booster solution selected

Having only spent 7 nights in my AS the biggest issue I have is connectivity for work. Having tried small internal antennas with little success, it was time to pull out the big guns... So I bit the bullet and ordered up some widgets from 3Gstore:

2 x 9.5" Omni antenna (SC-288W)

1 x Wilson Mobile 50db 5-Band SmarTech III Kit (460108)

2 x 30 Foot LMR400 Cable (952330)

I got 2 antennas as I hope this will give me a little flexibility for FOV - the AC unit can be quite an obstruction. One will be used for wifi when available and the other for cell signal.

The local AS dealer will be doing the install for me some time in December, once I confirm all the gear passes a "soft" home test. I do plan on getting some pics of the install to share...

We are planning a week away over Christmas/New Year and that will be the big test!

For the record, I am using a Pepwave SOTG with a novatel 551 USB 4G modem on Verizon.

Does anyone think the L shaped sofa is comfortable?

We have a 2004 Classic 28 ft. The comfort of the living area is important to us...and we find our current configuration pretty comfy. The seating is an actual upholstered sofa that was standard in this model, and with the beanbag footstools we added. It suits well for an afternoon or evening with a good book.

That said, it is hard to get over the sleek look of a new Flying Cloud ( we would go for another 28 footer), with the ducted air and brand new everything.

One of the sticking points for us, however, is all the negative comments about how uncomfortable the standard L shaped seating is, that is basically a bench covered with foam. It seems like everyone who can, rips it out and replaces it with recliners. We cant see buying new and then remodeling.

We went to the dealer the other day and in a short sit test in a new FC28, were pleasantly surprised at the comfort of the seating given the negativity. I was able to curl up in the corner, and could imagine feeling pretty good with a throw pillow at my back. Of course, a few minutes on the couch doesn't tell you much about the long term comfort.

So, what are we missing here? Does anyone find the L shaped couch comfy?

ISO 1966 Globetrotter interior photos

Hey guys, I've been looking for sometime now for interior photos of a 1966 Globetrotter TWIN. Specifically I'm interested in the "original" street side furnace cabinet. My 66' has had the heater box removed and I suspect the cabinet "reworked" by PO(s). I have seen many "doubles" with the street side refrigerator and the gaucho across the front, but my twin has a curb side fridge and comfortable seating for four/five around the table as well as the pull out gauchos for sleeping. The old cut-a-way Airstream brochure illustrations just don't have the detail to really see the cabinet clearly or it's construction.

My current project is to try to put the old furnace cabinet back to as original as possible while installing a small 5200 BTU window AC unit into the space. The plan is to pull cool outside from under the trailer thought the belly pan and exhaust the hot air out the side through a removable baggage door that matches the others while it replaces the ugly vent hole from the old furnace.

Any help or shared photos would be greatly appreciated,

From 2009 when I installed my new flooring.

1976 Airstream Sovereign 31 - Florida

Title: 1976 Airstream Sovereign 31 - Florida

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

This Airstream needs a loving restoration/renovation to return it to its former glory or a total gut and remodel/modernization. It is all-original except for the air conditioner (which was replaced when I bought it on consignment from the original owner) and radio (original replaced with a AM/FM/CD player). It is a side bath/double bed floor plan. Due to age several things do not work (Dometic fridge/freezer died, Bowen water heater needs new gas valve, inverter does not charge the battery, soft spot on floor by the door, roof vent fans do not work, streetside awning canvas missing, tambour doors in two kitchen cabinets broken). Structurally it is sound. It has the original draperies, upholstery, etc., all in need of replacement. This Airstream would be an excellent candidate for restoration. The trailer has been used on occasional weekends at a campground in eastern Citrus County, FL and is stored at the campground located 15 miles west of the Wildwood exit of Interstate 75, just northwest of the northern end of the Florida Turnpike. This would be an "as is, where is" sale. Contact me with any questions. I would prefer to sell it to someone who wants it for renovation/remodel purposes. Feel free to e-mail me at clboyd0722@earthlink.net with serious inquiries or to make me an offer I cannot refuse!
