My wife and I are considering pulling the boat from the water and doing some dry-land touring over the next few years with our family of five. We live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Our children are 5, 3 and 1. We're trying to better understand what size/layout Airstream makes sense for our family (and if this makes sense at all within our parameters).
So, some questions:
- Our towing vehicle is a '13 Chevy Suburban 1/2 ton 4WD. The hitch is rated for 1,000lb tongue/10,000lb trailer; the truck is rated for 600lb tongue/5,000lb trailer. Does anyone have a similar configuration, and if so, what's reality? I really don't want to have to buy a new tow vehicle but of course safety is critically important.
- Size/configuration: I'm considering a Flying Cloud 23D which looks like it sleeps 5 and has a dry weight of 4,700lb. Does it really sleep five? How much weight should I expect to add in cargo? My wife and I are both 6ft tall - will the bed be comfortable/the right size. Our kids can probably tuck away easily in other parts of the Airstream. Are we fooling ourselves by thinking this size trailer would work for us?
Any suggestions/comments/questions? I'm just getting my feet wet on researching this.
