We had this trailer built specifically to our specifications. After taking delivery we went to the Airstream Factory where we worked with one of their technicians who did the build for the custom living room. This added $5,000 to the cost/value of the trailer.
The hydraulic disk brakes have worked to our satisfaction and prefer them to electric trailer brakes.
The factory installed solar system has also worked very well. As a general rule the batteries are at 100% charge by 10 AM when we are without electrical hooks-ups or we choose not to run the generator in the truck. One time it took until noon for them to reach full capacity due to a wee bit of cloud. We went so far as to purchase a small table lamp from Target that is silver in color and fits nicely on the night stand between the beds; replaced the 110V AC plug with a cigarette lighter type plug one would find on a light or some other such 12V DC appliance. We did this after we had sourced a screw in fluorescent light bulb that operated on 12V DC. We use this light to read with in the evenings and find that it provides a very nice ambiance in the bed room. We offer this information just to provide more information related to how easy it is to live with 12 DC rather than 110 V AC.
Please note that we have NOT included the two chairs pictured on the web site that are in the living room. These are Ekornes Stressless Recliners. I suspect that no one will want to pay what these chairs cost. But, having said that, the have custom made cotton covers that have covered them from day one (both the chairs and matching foot stools) and look like new. The smaller one has an attachment for a table that my wife uses for her laptop computer. Both chairs and foot stools have the 360 degree swivel base. We are willing to include them in the deal but they will add $5,000 to the price.
As for the DC to AC inverter, it has been used very rarely. We find it much more effective to use 12 V systems to operate/charge things like telephones, laptop computers, etc., etc. If we were to do anything in the way of an upgrade to the electrical systems it would be to add a third glass mat (AGM) battery to the solar system. But, having said that, the two battery system has worked very well for us. The only reason we would add a third battery would be to operate the forced air heating system. The fan on the heating system can drain the batteries more quickly than any other item in the trailer. Truth be told, we do not use the forced air heater very much, When it is that cold we then to locatre ourselves where we have an electrical connection; we then use a small Vornado electric heater which can keep the entire trailer warm even when there has been 12" of snow on the ground (we got caught in Lake Tahoe one spring; went for a day, spent a week).
The only appliances in the trailer that must have AC electricity to operate are the Microwave, TV and Air Conditioners. Using an inverter to operate these items is very inefficient. It is much more effective to use a generator to power these units. Our truck has a Honda 3000i generator that works very well (and is very quiet) for running one air conditioning unit. We can operate the TV with the air conditioner running. But, the microwave draws too much power to run when the air conditioner is operating. We will include the Honda generator with the truck which is also available. The truck also has a compressor that is mounted in a fashion that makes it very easy to remove and put back on the truck. Both the generator and the compressor are locked onto the truck bed such that removal would be extremely difficult for anyone without the key.
We worked very hard to ensure that modifications were done in a manner that retained the beauty and function of the trailer. This has been our home since new and we will be sad to part with it; especially after all the work we put into it. We believe that there is not another Airstream Classic that can compare and it will make a fine unit for the lucky buyer.
