fuse for running lights keeps blowing

I have a 2007 Basecamp and the fuse for the running lights seems to blow within a day or so of replacing it. There are very few visible wires to look for a short and I'm afraid there might be a short buried where I can't see it. Any ideas? It's been fine for years, now suddenly this occurs.

Great Sprinter Service!

Just a quick shout-out for the folks at Upscale Automotive AKA 'The Sprinter Store'. I just had them do some upgrading on my '11 2500 service van as it's just about to turn 100K miles and the front struts were shot.

Sprinter Store replaced all struts/shocks with their heavy duty Koni adjustable gas units (lifetime warranty to the original owner), added a couple of rear leaf helper springs and a second transmission fluid cooler.

The van handling is improved by AT LEAST 100% with the new struts and springs, the work was excellent and done by Sprinter specialists. Road sway is completely gone and the van tracks like it's on rails! I'm very pleased, to say the least! And after having both Mercedes and Freightliner look (unsuccessfully) for an annoying rattle in the front that sounded like a heat shield, Sprinter Store not only found it, but is ordering the new shield and brackets, along with a new EGR valve that has been the cause of a hesitation at 1800 RPM. Work soon to be completed!

If you're anywhere near the Portland, OR area, they are DEFINITELY worth the trip!!!! :D

Length of new subfloor

Need some help! Installing new Nyloboard subfloor tomorrow in my '67 22' safari. I made the critical error of not measuring the length of the existing subfloor before demolition.

Can anyone help with this???

I know its close to 19' but would love some exact dimensions if anyone had any. ( she'll is currently suspended in the air and I cannot try accurate measurements due to flex.).

Thanks got the help!

Loren1 1994 excella 34'

Hi,

My wife recently purchased this trailer out of Mesa AZ we live near Edmonton Alberta. Somewhere between Mesa and the Canada/US border the curb side "rock guard" flew off and was lost. Poor pre-travel check! My wife got a quote from an RV firm in BC Canada, looking at the cost of the replacement and shipping, I'm thinking they quoted for the CS Panoramic window not the CS rock guard. Looking at the parts list I believe the part number for the window is 372089 and the part number for the rock guard is 685275-101. Does anyone out there know if this is correct? I would like to have all my ducks in a row before I contact this dealer.

Smallest Towing car

Hello,

I'm new to all of this. I want to buy a small trailer, not more than 25 .

I don't like big cars or trucks. What is the smallest towing car that I could buy?

I saw some people have Jeeps. What models would be good for this. What other brands and models?

Thanks!!

1969 Airstream Sovereign 31 - Florida

Title: 1969 Airstream Sovereign 31 - Florida

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

AIRSTREAM: 1969 International Sovereign 31’

Mostly a stock classic. Solid Frame. A few items to upgrade can be your choice as we have priced that saving for you. Wouldn’t you rather put a little money and time into a solid blank slate rather than pay for someone elses questionable tastes? This trailer has had light use and spent most of its life waiting to go on vacation.. Window blinds by Levelor. The wheel bearings, seals, and electric brakes have about 400 miles on them.

Tires hold air and are ok for around town, yet a big road trip might require prudence of changing. One spare tire. Original solid steel welded hitch ball, and load stabilizers.

We have a used Duotherm AC ready to be installed. Full sized full length Zipdee Awning on door side and half sized full length Zipdee Awning on non-door side. New front door airstream handle / lock, secondary double deadbolt. New aluminum refrigerator vent cowl. Other spare parts.

Tow Packages - Are they Necessary for Me?

I am a recent owner of a 2012 Flying Cloud 20 foot, all I need is a tow vehicle and I will be off to the races. Quick rundown of the FC specs:

5000# GVWR • 5000# Axle System • 4211# UBW • 789# NCC • 631# Hitch Weight

I'm considering a used (2009 - 2014) extended cab 4x4 1/2 ton pickups from the usual suspects - Ford F150, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. I'm pretty certain that any of the three trucks would provide the right combination of towing and payload capacity (someone can correct me if I'm way wrong). The issue that I have been having is that I would prefer a truck with a tow package - but when I do my searches I have had some difficulty in finding one. I'm not saying it is impossible - far from it - but when I search on sites I would see maybe 20 vehicles that fit the criteria I'm looking for (less than 80k miles) but if I also select that it has a tow package that gets me closer to two or three vehicles. I live in Denver, Colorado.

Are the factory tow packages preferred over those without? And, if I purchased a vehicle without a tow package how much expense is involved in getting a vehicle "tow ready?" What are the pros and cons of a factory package vs. after-market?

Also, one other, perhaps, simple question, the original owner used a 2009 Chevy Avalanche as a tow vehicle. The owner is willing to sell his 110k mi vehicle to me for about $15k, his vehicle already has all the necessary pieces to tow the FC - would anyone have reservations or recommendations about using the Avalanche?

The vehicle came with an equal-i-zer hitch which I intend to use as well.

If I left out some crucial information that would help you answer the above question it would be happy to answer it if I can find it. I tried the search function to see if I could find the answer to this question but could not seem to find the right information.

Am I on the right track for a tow vehicle?

Perfect Stain Color for 60's era oak

Had a water damaged panel in my 64 Overlander - next to the door. I took it in, and found that there is a new stain made by minwax. Part of their custom stain line - you have to have it mixed up front. It's called English Oak, and it's a dead ringer for the original color. Very happy with it.

1967 ambassador axle and brakes original

Does anyone know who made the axles and break system on this 1967 airstream

Frame Rot - New Frame

I have been slowly working on a shell off restoration of a 29 foot 1969 Ambassador Airstream. I have the odd habit of taking on labor intensive projects over Labor Day weekend. Two years ago, I thought it would be a good idea to lay 9 pallets of sod. I am surprised my family still talks to me after that stunt. So this weekend, I thought it was time sand blast the frame of the Airstream. Well, two days into the blasting, I had to come to the inevitable conclusion there is not enough metal left on the frame to save the frame. Suggestions for frame building?

Ram Ignition Switch

I have a 2011, 2500 CTD, 6.7 l. Recently the ignition switch has been acting up. It starts just fine but I have to physically rotate the fob back to the on position otherwise none of the convenience package works including the direction signals. Today when I turned off the engine and took the fob out of the ignition the warning beeper sounded that the key was still in the switch which caused the door locks not to work.

Anyone else having this problem?

On Demand Water Heat???

I am looking to Upgrade from the Suburban 6 gallon Water Heater (LP Eater) To a On Demand Water Heater. Anyone have any experience in this area?

Tires on 1971 21' Globe Trotter

This airstream belonged to my dad and it has been sitting for a while. He put new tires on it in 5/24/2006. They were st225 75r15 8ply marathon tires. They do not have many miles on them and the tread looks new. I know I need to pull the hubs and inspect the brakes and repack the bearings. Do the tires need replacing, we plan on using the camper a little before winter this year. All trips would be within an hours drive. Got to have new batteries and I just replaced the water pump. Thanks!

window replacement 1997 excella 35'

I just bought a 1997 35' Excella 1000 and it has a broken window on the side second to the left of the entrance door. Is this window easily replaced by a glass installer or is this a special order Item? Where would I order it from if so?

Title: 1963 Airstream Overlander 26 - Washington

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

1963 AIRSTREAM OVERLANDER LANDYACHT 26' (GREAT RESTORATION PROJECT)

Trailer has been gutted on the inside. Partial oak cabinetry remains and could be used for a patern for restoration. The P.O. left a fair amount of the original interior wood, along with potable water tank. Floor needs replacing. Two windows are broke, all others work well. 120 volt power works in trailer, NO 12VDC inverter. Tail & brake lights work fine.Original Armstrong A/C unit. Original heater.Original gas lines in place. Dura-Torque axles. (3) original hubcaps.

Exterior skins are in very nice shape other than a couple small dings. Belly pan/skins are also in very nice shape. The rear rectangular skin (4' x 5'approx.) under the black water tank is missing along with . Other than the typical surface rust, all visible frame parts are fine. Tires hold air but are basically shot. I pulled the trailer home (20 miles), wheel bearings were totally cool...not even warm. She pulls nice ! CLEAR TITLE !

If you have questions please contact or call.

Denison, TX Recommendations?

My wife and I plan on spending a long term stay in Denison Texas starting this November. It looks like there are quite a few places listed online for RV parking with it being so close to Lake Texoma. Any recommendations on parks in or around Denison for long term stays?

River's End CG Tybee - Not Sure?

So was considering going to the area of savannah, Hilton head, tybee, for a 7 day summer beach trip in 2015 as we have never been to that part of the country.

We liked the idea of being very close to the beach with our small kids so we spotted this "River's End Campground".

Also my sister and her two daughters (8 and 11) are going to meet us there, and possibly shack up with us in the AS (we did this a couple weekends ago successfully and had a blast with the girls)...this would be total of 7...their website says max 6 persons per site...but perhaps they wont count my 2 year old? Ill call them about this I suppose ahead of time...we will have 3 adults, a 4 year old, 2 year old, an 8 year old and 11 year old.

Concerned though because all of the seemingly nicer interior spots are already reserved leaving only the perhaps less desirable outer sites many lite the road which I read is fairly busy...this could be annoying stress with small kids...but doable I suppose.

Beach was not dog friendly, but a nice dog park near there I hear.

My sister could rent a cabin if push comes to shove...but we leaned away from that because at night its easier for all us 3 adults to sit around and enjoy the campfire and some cold beverages will all kids in the camper fast asleep, then later adults pop in and sleep.

I had looked at the other nearby option of skidaway island state park...much nice camping spots it seems, but a drive to the beach and my wife was concerned it would be too much hassle to enjoy the beach and stuff for kids to do as we see it...easier to bring kids back for naps if we are near the beach for example.

Any thoughts? Ideas? I really wish my sister could just come down here and we go to say port st. joe here in the panhandle in april or may...but that is way far for her...

What about time of year in that region? June is good for tybee with kids?

Thanks for any and all advice folks

Oh, to the person that had PM'ed me all about Hilton head stuff to do...something happened and I think I accidentally deleted ALL my messages....I am genuflecting right now in lieu of my terrible sin!! that was so thoughtful and detailed..I feel awful truly! And I forget your screen name :(

1988 Excella replaced curved front side window assembly

Removing/replacing a damaged front curved window (glass is shattered) frame on a 1988 Airstream Excella TT.

Recommend obtaining a replacement window/frame and assembly hardware

before beginning this task. Suggest trying to order directly from Airstream.

1) Remove as much of the loose glass from the frame as is safely possible. Use a shop vacuum to remove the glass shards from inside the trailer.

2) Center punch each rivet head to start the drill as close to the center as possible. (~20 minutes)

3) Use a variable speed electric drill (not battery powered) with a 5/32” diameter, sharp drill bit.

a. Use just enough pressure and speed on the drill to create a long, continuous chip. A little practice will help achieve this. Using a fast drill speed and pushing too hard will just make you tired. And you may end up pushing the drill bit through trim on the inside of the trailer, as it breaks through the rivet body.. If you are drilling several rivets out (~50 or more) check the sharpness of the drill bit and regrind to sharpen if needed.

b. Removing the large rivet head from the drill bit can be a challenge. My technique is to reverse the drill motor slowly while I am holding the rivet head with pliers. Comes right off. (total time: 3 hours for 84 rivets)

4) Using a box knife, split the center of all visible caulking lengthwise on the inside of the window housing, that is attached to the old window frame. This will ease removal of the window frame from the housing. Be careful to not cut yourself on any residual glass in the frame. (~2 minutes)

5) Remove the old window frame from the window housing. Use a mallet and 2”x2”x2’ solid piece of wood. From the inside, begin at a corner of the old frame using the piece of wood as a punch. Alternately, give each corner area of the window frame several blows and you will see light begin to come through. The frame/caulk seal will give away and the frame can then be removed by hand. (~2 minutes)

6) Remove the existing caulking from the housing: “Actually, I found (after trying every solvent I could find...xylene working the best...but still an arduous task) that a heat gun worked really well. Softened it right up, and let me scrape it off with a plastic putty knife. The heat gun I used was meant for de-soldering printed circuit boards, so it has a very small nozzle...just about perfect for a bead of vulkem.” (From the internet)

I used a metal putty knife and carefully removed the caulking from the internal housing. When down to mostly bare aluminum I used mineral spirits on a shop rag to do the final caulk removal. Then I washed all surfaces with hot water and liquid detergent. I tried a heat gun but it was not as effective as I had hoped. (~4 hours) (Later found an excellent solvent as described below.)

7) Using one of the new Olympic rivets I checked all of the holes in the housing with the rivet shank to assure problem free assembly.

8) The replacement window arrived. The box was undamaged. The window assembly was packed in large bubble wrap and supported inside the box by special cardboard ribs. The packing slip attached to the shipping box indicates the assembly came from the Airstream company. (part #372088-100 Wind. Cor. Wrap. RS Frt. CS Rear). I sent an email to the Airstream factory requesting any tips for installing the window they might have.

9) Mary and I lifted the window assembly into the trailer housing and determined all is well with about ¼” outward bow across the middle top and bottom and about 3/16” of clearance all around the inside of the frame for caulking.

10) Received a call (22 Aug 2014) from Dan at the Airstream factory, regarding my email query. He advised me to screw the window in place first, working from the vertical straight edge near the center window, then going around the remainder of the frame, again using screws first, then finally rivets. He said that he has had as much as 2” of bowing and twist and still safely mounted a window. He said that the window glass could be gently moved inside the frame if needed, using a putty knife or tapping with a piece of wood. (Dan, (937)596-6111 x7408 Airstream in Ohio, if I need more advice.)

11) I shall proceed to open all of the holes in the window frame to .166” diameter. Presently they are too small for the rivets. Turns out some of the holes in the new frame did not line up with the holes in the housing so had to be drilled anew using holes in the new frame as the template.

12) Began installing the new window by injecting a small bead of the Vulkem polyurethane caulk all around the inside of the window frame, then lifting the window/frame into place with the straight edge aligned with the straight edge of the existing center window. Used 2 screws (existing screws gathered in the trailer over the years) to fasten the window in the opening, then observed where modifications would be needed for a final fit. This is where the work began! Had to make modifications in the wall which supports the far end of the window frame. Turns out the frame on the new window is about 3/8” longer than the older frame. (Better than too short!) A good friend assisted me in this part of the installation and he has a special vibrating saw tool designed for cutting materials in very tight places and this saved me a lot sweat and concern. Sheet metal was trimmed to facilitate installation of the frame which in turn was fastened into place with a few more screws, then the 84 rivets were installed (screws were removed when approached), trimmed with a nose end wire cutter (not a side cutter), then carefully polished with a small Black and Decker electric hand tool with a ¾” diameter x ½ “ long emery paper cylinder (replaceable) tool. I did not have access to a rivet head polishing tool. Rivets were installed alternately: 2 or 3 on the top, then 2 or 3 on the bottom, working from the front to the rear. I was pleased to see the ¼ “ gap between the frame and the trailer housing disappear as the rivets were installed! Be sure to remove the screws, as you progress to the rear, so they do not prevent the proper seating of the frame against the trailer housing! (~8 hours)

13) Some of the Vulkem caulking ended up on the aluminum trailer skin and squirted out all around the window frame. This stuff is tough to remove. I found a solvent that did a fine job of removal with very little effort: Klean Strip Premium Stripper Paste, available at Wal-Mart and Home Depot. It is a paste/jell product, not liquid, is applied with a paint brush and is very easy to use. Works almost instantly in removing the caulk residue. Follow the instructions carefully! This is powerful stuff. (~1 hour)

14) I used the same caulk material on the inside of the trailer, placing a thick bead all around window frame then dipping my fingers into a warm solution of water and detergent (to prevent the caulk from sticking to my fingers), gently forced that material into the space between the window frame and the housing. (~10 minutes)

15) About 3 days later after the caulking had cured and was no longer sticky, I finished by re-installing the plastic internal trim around the window, then the window drapery and vacuumed the couch and carpet. Ready to go again!!!

16) Would I do this again? Probably not as I am 81 years old and not as physically flexible as I used to be. But I’m glad that I was able to do it this time with some help from a very good friend. And the repair looks good.

Best TV for MPG with 20 footer Airstream ?

Sliding Door maintenance

Anyone got any tips on how to keep the sliding door in our 2005 AI working smoothly.

It seems we have to slam it hard every time to close it. Wondered what the best lube should be ? I know WD40 is more of a cleaner than lubricator and to attracts dirt.

cheers

Celebrate Freedom with Your Family....

Go Camping On A Working Farm

According to the West Virginia Division of Tourism, camping is the number one leisure time activity of travelers visiting the Mountain State. Surveys indicate that vacationers prefer camping because it offers families the opportunity to spend precious time being together. The owners of the new Pegasus Farm Campground are banking on these statistics.

At first impression, one could see the Pegasus Farm Campground & Music Park as simply a brand new camping facility ready to accommodate high tech RVs, motor homes, and travel trailers. You won't find hundreds of campers at this Elkins, West Virginia campground, however. The facility offers only 17 large, roomy, full hookup sites and a large, beautiful bathhouse for the tent and pop-up guests staying in the secluded 20-acre tent area.

If you dig a little deeper, though, you'll notice that most of the acreage within the RV area is planted in gardens. There's the Kirby Bean Patch, the Johnson Tomato Field, and a large garden for peppers, squash and cucumbers (as yet unnamed). In the center of the field between the two outdoor music stages (that hosts music on Saturday evenings and seasonal special events), over an acre of tilled land lays waiting for the planting of the Zen garden, a labyrinth of perennials, leading to a classical center. Across the railroad tracks, in the tent area, you'll find the corn, onion, and potato garden . . . and acres and acres of sunflowers planted in rotation to bloom throughout the summer.

Owners Mark and Bonnie Branciaroli have cultivated a business in Randolph County that is part of a new national tourism trend — Agritourism. What is Agritourism?

"In simple terms," says Branciaroli "Agritourism is the marriage of tourism and agriculture. Families who have lived for generations in the cities and metro areas do not have the opportunity to experience the process of growing food and eating food that comes from the land. People want a new experience when they travel. They want an escape from the stress of traffic jams, office cubicles and carpooling, and most parents want their children to learn how food is grown, where it comes from. You can experience all that on the Pegasus Farm."

According to national travel industry surveys, travelers are looking for new experiences that strengthen their family relationships. "Agritourism nurtures positive emotions," Branciaroli explained. "It rekindles our emotions by bringing to life memories of spending summers on the grandparents' farms. Most of us have a farm somewhere in our family tree. Visiting a working farm brings back those fond memories."

Located just two miles from downtown Elkins and minutes from the community's Super WalMart the Pegasus Farm setting is ideal. Although the Farm is close to every possible convenience, its location in the center of the Tygart Valley, (which is hugged on both sides by two mountain chains), offers solitude during the day and quiet, star-lit nights. From the center of the campground, you can see the mountains all around you. The southern and northern boundaries of the property are marked with a quiet, clear-water run and the deep waters of Chenoweth Creek, a large creek that empties into the Tygart River. Guests have the option of fishing for smallmouth and rock bass in Chenoweth Creek, or trying their luck in the new pond. On the other side of these waterways are hundreds of acres of pastureland and cornfields.

"Out-of-state guests who have stayed with us say the same thing," said Branciaroli, "that they have not slept so good in a long time. They feel safe here. The campground areas are located at the end of a dead end road and surrounded by water and mountains. No one enters or leaves without us knowing since our home is located at the entrance of the farm."

During the day there's plenty to do on the Farm, in Elkins and the surrounding area. Families can hike or bike the grass maze (shaped like a sunflower), ride the excursion train (the New Tygart Flyer) which boards at the downtown Elkins depot, take in music shows at the farm or in Elkins, or just explore the nearby Monongahela National Forest.

Life on the farm doesn't mean leaving hi tech society behind. If bringing the laptop is a must, wireless broadband is available at each site and throughout the farm.

According to Branciaroli RV sites are available for daily, weekly and monthly rental. A unique school bus (converted for "rustic" RV camping) is also available for rent.

"We are just 35 minutes from I-79, and 3.5 hour drive from the Washington DC/Northern Va metro area," Branciaroli concluded. "Our central location is the key to many happy vacations."

For more information, the Pegasus Farm Campground and Music Park may be reached at 1-800-768-2087 or online at Pegasus Farm Campground and Music Park - West Virginia RV parks and Campgrounds - Camping in West Virginia - RV Clubs

Seems like a silly question. I have a 60 x 14 enclosed storage unit up in Pasco County here in Florida on the Gulf Coast. Since heading into the winter months it might be less of an issue.

But I'm currently repairing floor rot, and given florida's humidity, I'm wondering if it's best for me to:

  • Close the trailer entirely and use a dehumidifier or

  • Leave windows open, and run the fan-tastic fans non-stop

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? When the door is down, she's covered from rain and outside weather, but it is not climate controlled inside the unit.

Tongue Weight Question

As a result of my recent accident, I am considering replacing my 2014 International Signature 27FB with a 2015 28' Serentiy. I have noticed though that there is a significant difference in (Airstreams stated) hitch weight between these two units. The 27FB is 770lbs and the 28' is 950. Does anyone know what contributes to the difference? In fact, it appears that the 28' has the greatest hitch weight of all current models.

Do you wave?

Just seems natural to wave when passing another Sprinter RV on the road. Not many wave back. Do you wave when you pass another Sprinter RV? Just Interstates? All Class B's? Never?

Black Tank Flush Leak

The Black Tank Flush inlet where you hook the water hose to flush the tank is leaking inside the wall of our trailer. Water comes out the belly pan just below the inlet nozzle on curb side of trailer. Water makes it into the black tank, but is also leaking at the inlet nozzle behind the outside wall.

Has anyone else had this issue and what did it take to repair. We have a 09 27FB International.

air conditioner "buzz"

While vacationing, we tried to run our air conditioning and it sounded like there was something there that the fan was brushing against. We figured it might be a twig, so we turned it off, and when we got back home, climbed onto the roof and removed the housing, to find a HUGE hornet's nest. Luckily, the nest was already vacated but a few bodies and larvae remained, which we vacuumed up.

Not recommended. I had to take the vacuum apart and clean it.

musty carpet odour from leak

Our trailer had a leak which caused the carpet in an under-the-bed compartment to become musty. Any suggestions to get rid of the odour?

A/C belt

Yesterday the a/c belt broke going down the interstate. GM dealer was closed for the holiday weekend. Autozone sold me a 13a1525 which turned out to be too long. I'm guessing that I need something like a 13B1450? Anyone know the correct belt for a '94 LY with a 454?

Dometic Stainless Door

samedi 30 août 2014

MY 2009 international 25 fB has stainless steel door panels on the dometic refrigerator has some scratches on it. Has anyone removed the panel and tried to reverse it? If the back is stainless I would like to reverse it to hide the scratches. Any input would be appreciated.

smell from somewhere dirty

the proper technique is always used when draining my black & gray water tanks. i also use a flush king frequently after draining. i also use chemicals in my tanks as suggested. Regardless of all this i still always smell stink. I even smell stink around the outside of my trailer. Can I be doing something wrong? Or do I have a broken something?

John:

Newbie

Live in northern Illinois. Just bought 1978 Argosy Minuet 6.0 from my uncle for $2000 . He bought it 2 years ago , was told everything worked. He paid $3500 and never stepped foot in it. I bought it to place on my property in Iowa as a hunting cabin per say. Want to put on concrete pad, up on blocks and skirt.

When I first looked at it, pretty clean, no mice, no leaks, no odor.

Figured $2000 was worth just shell alone(cost me over $500 for material to build 4 x 8 chicken coop for wife, nothing fancy, to place in barn. Would have been another $500 for steel to put in yard. Didn't hàppen. I know, awfully expensive eggs!) remember, just material, no labor.

Got it home cleaned it up and started çhecking out mechanics. Air, stove and fridge work(metal bottom face rusty, creating bad seal). Found water heàter and PVC fitting by front storage tank leaking. Wasn't properly winterized. I am a plumber by trade so should I find it worth it, repair. Already use to hunting without running water so not a priority. No gas to furnàce(yes I turned on gas cock) guessing bad gas valve but could not locate. Solution...electric space heatèr.

So for $2000, I have a small furnished cabin with air, stove and fridge(don't hold enough beer tho). Any insight on any issues would be appreciated...just go easy on me if you think I paid too much.

Indiana Toll Road is a Disgrace

Returned Monday from an 8,200 mile, 3 1/2 week trip....NC to OR/CA and points in between. While we encountered some rough roads, I would advise against pulling a trailer on the Indiana Toll Road. My trailer and TV are set-up to spec, but no matter what speed or what lane I was in, I felt a new sympathy for bull-riders. There were many instances of roads with issues, but even my birth state of Minnesota ("two seasons; winter and road repair") was a LOT better than Hoosierland. Out of the 22 states I traversed, Indiana gets my award for nastiest pavement. I should have taken pictures of the interior of my trailer. Doors and cabinets (including fridge and freezer) that had NEVER popped open before...all had purged their contents. Beware!

Dometic 310 Toilet "Rock and Roll"

So, I noticed on a recent 3 1/2 week trip that my toilet was rocking back and forth...not a lot, but noticeable. I thought it was where the toilet is bolted to the floor. Nope. It was rocking at the joint between the plastic base and the ceramic bowl. In looking at the Dometic info I noticed something on the order of "no user servicing of the bowl to the base." I dismounted the toilet, tipped it upside down and found four bolts that hold the base to the porcelain bowl. All four of them were loose, so I tightened them up and remounted the toilet. Problem fixed. BTW, this may be one of the outcomes of the infamous "INDIANA TOLL ROAD"....hands down the WORST four lane highway I have ever been on.

Slinky Dog :: 2001 Airstream Safari

Slinky Dog :: 2001 Airstream Safari (2014-08-30 23:05:32)

Adventure Floor Time or How to Defeat the buyers moisture detector.

Floor Rot Surprise! Hozah!

Well, we tested the floor with a moisture detector and got zero results. The floor was just a little "flexy' under the table, but I thought to myself, "Probably just a trailer floor."

So how do you hide the fact that the floor is gone to crap? You cover it up with a big sheet of metal, then put down new laminate and make up a lie about the new laminate and hope the new owner is none the wiser.

Photographic evidence of todays discovery.

So I'm glad I decided to start pulling this up today. There was a very serious level of moisture trapped under all this.

The wood in this corner is soaked, and I mean SOAKED, I am not sure an epoxy or GIT-ROT is going to work on this. A matter of fact, you can see where I had an accident. While leaning on the floor to remove the seat, my hand went right thru it.

You can see pretty well the direction I think the water and moisture has been traveling. Worse, under neath the new" laminate was additional pooling moisture. Glad I got it today. The floor towards the back seems all solid and good, checked bathroom floor as well.

Given my notes and the evidence here, I think this was done on purpose to conceal the issue. Kind of mad about that in reality. What do you think? Could this really be someone's half a$$'d fix?

Anyhow, I'll probably contact the guy I bought it from and chew him out for lying, flat out saying there is "NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS TRAILER". But it is what it is. I also don't understand how my inspector missed this, except that I made a rookie mistake and agreed to use the sellers "recommended RV Dealer"

------

As far as the Airstream goes, I am going to keep her and restore her. This is "our" trailer. I am the 3rd owner, the guy who I just bought it from had it only since Jan. And I managed to contact the original owner, who was a WBCCI member. Wonderful, wonderful gentlemen whom my wife and I plan on visiting to hear more stories of his travels. He bought the Airstream originally and told us he's taken it everywhere.

To quote him:

Quote:

The trailer has been to every state and province of Canada except

the NW Territory, Newfoundland and Labrador. It has been to Alaska twice,

once on the top of the world highway from Dawson City, Yukon Territory

to Chicken, AK.

Yeah, I just love the history of this. I love that it's already been all the places we want to go. So I don't have buyer remorse here. Kind of hard to explain, but we knew this was "our" Airstream, good and bad.

I just wish the bad was told to me than hidden.

So starting this thread as I work thru this process of replacing the damaged floor and tracking down the source of the leak.

Since I have a 2007 and my forum search seems to point to checking the seal where the bumper makes contact at the rear under the belt line first.

:) Well, I'll keep smiling.

Certainly glad I paid extra for a covered storage unit now.

West Boondocking our new 2014 25' International

After eight years towing a 23' 2006 Safari, the 25 foot Airstream may as well be 50 feet long. Everything is different. Although the aluminum skin, inside and out was expected, but the windows, vents, lights, refrigerator, storage, faucets, sinks, stool... it will take some getting use to it all.

The maiden trip begins tomorrow to Wyoming, Southwest Montana and Eastern Idaho... the targets of this break in period. It required 12 months towing the 2006 Safari to find what needed to be tweaked. I expect to have this trailer completely combed through for anything... anything that needs attention to uneven road travel and getting adjusted to the wider body and longer trailer for "dips in the road".

My experience with the first AS was truly an education. The first thing I did was take the blue "waterproof" duct tape and wrapped the tow frame to the hitch. This part really catches the grit chipping off the paint. When I go to sell this trailer, I will remove the tape and should have a very nicely preserved painted frame. We will see. This is a "beta test" for abuse.

Second was to add some roof flashing, cut some strips out and inserted it along the brackets that hold the water tank to the frame. (You will figure out how to slide some flashing in between to hold the strip.) On this model I did this on the "left side facing the trailer inside, between the wheels. The fresh water drain and the hot & cold drain units are exposed directly to any gravel that will break or impair their use. The first thing that gravel broke off on my 2006 was the white plastic water drain... which I purchased an 8 cent cork and used it for several years to keep the fresh water from draining out. I took duct tape and attached it to hold this roof flashing (the bent flap of metal that fits behind the gutters on a roof edge). You cannot use screws as it could puncture the water tank itself. It seems firm and secure with a 30 inch section to support the small section that blocks anything from hitting these exposed pieces of hardware. Beta test... two.

In the mid section is a copper pipe that moves LPGas to the furnace. It is at a right angle to the travel of the trailer. I took strips of, of course, duct tape and have it well protected. This is another easy target for loose gravel and grit to pummel the copper. Beta test... three and counting.

The Power Jack and the new hitch are nice, but the tail gate of the Tundra would not drop without hitting the control switches and electric motor. Using an "allen head" wrench, there are three screws, I loosened them according to the loose sheets of instructions provided by the manufacturer and rotated this unit to the left side, facing the trailer. The tail gate clears by 1/4 inch... but I can drop the tail gate. 1/4 inch and 3 feet are the same to me... it clears. This I did not expect when hooking up today. But... this hitch, cannot recall the name, has the two long bars that rest flat and you have these two chrome "L" that clip on to hold them onto the bracket. Beta test... four.

The two Fantastic Fans I covered with those white all weather plastic covers. The frames for these Fantastic Fans are a bit different and you have to improvise where to screw the bracket onto it, to attach the covers. I took a drill to start the screw so it would not split or crack the plastic Fantastic Fan frame. If you have done these before... you will see there is a difference and you have less to work with. I had to use metal screws and not the nuts and bolts to attache the bracket, and added calk to help hold it secure. We will see... Beta test... five.

These next two to three weeks will complete the beta testing and find any weak hinges, undersized screws or "blue duct tape going wrong".

Everything at Windish RV west of Denver... checked out and worked. Fantastic Fans on others were noisy or were having a motor replaced by their mechanics. This one... they were quiet. But after reading on the Forum about bad motors... I was already aware! The Power Jack makes some weird sounds, but not as much as some others I tested while browsing other models. This one was quiet and I will keep a close eye to it.

I will be looking at how well the unit keeps DUST OUT OF THE INTERIOR.

Since this model has a Micro Wave... we have the refrigerator fan... no quieter or noisier than the 2006... we will see.

We are loaded, flushed the water system and lines, LPG is working and carrying about 5 gallons of fresh water, a second time, to flush anything out of the water tank. I had Windish RV add water to the tank so by the time we arrived home... I drained it once and this time should get most any taste out of the tank. Beta test... six, I guess.

The Airstream floor mat is nicer than the 2006 and the carrying bag for the pile of manuals was also nicer. The Pioneer Radio was discovered "always on unless you remove it" so figured that one out. It was intended for a car and when the ignition is turned off, the radio is off... well this is a trailer, so it has a 24 hour color show. Beta test... seven? Wife called Pioneer and had that one answered!

NEWBIES GUIDE to Airstreaming by Rich Luhr

After eight wonderful years of pleasure and a few moments of endurance with our 2006 23 foot Safari, we were able to part with our first trailer. The new owner will enjoy our well maintained Safari for years into the future.

Going to a 25 foot AS International will take some getting use to. More room. More fresh water capacity. More refrigerator. Just plain more... as well as the initial price. As we discovered with our 2006, the purchase price and the resale price was in the 70% to 75%. I consider that a great investment for ANY trailer. We had three buyers. The first purchased it. A second had to hear the bad news after a 24 hour waiting period to close the deal. And, closed the deal we did and promptly had room in our RV fitted garage!

Many things have changed. LED lights were immediately discovered. The "car" radio that never turns off was a challenge to figure out. Back to the manuals.

While browsing service manuals... a wonderful discovery.

Rich Luhr who is also the editor and publisher of the Airstream Life Magazine which many of you may be aware, wrote a 98 page booklet for "Newbies". Newbies...? This booklet should be a required rite of passage into Airstreaming... period! It was well written and covered controversial subjects as grey and black water disposal very well.

This booklet should be standard reading for friends, guests and ALL new and fairly new Airstream owners. I am not one to go on gushing about anything. I am a Missouri Mule stuck in the high country of the USA and in the thin air one can kick up plenty of dust and sage brush. This is one of those times I took to a saddle and have nothing to complain, nit pick or just plain rubbing against a barbed wire fence for pleasure.

There is no price on this spiral bound 8vo book, but it will be well worth the small investment. Rich... your 1000 days in your Airstream paid off in more than one way. Thank you for sharing your well thought out advice!

my "virgin" posting .. battery question ..

hi airstream forums,

just purchased my first Airstream and beyond stoked:)) i have a 1972 Sovereign in original condition, it had been sat for years if not decades.

my first question (no doubt, they will be many) .. plugged in my battery from my pop-up with probably about 50% charge , the battery meter showed 50% reading. within 15mins the lights faded to nothing, ok, so here's my question.. i went to take out the battery and noticed that the cables were HOT. this seemed really strange .. like there was a short circuit or something ..

think i need professional advice but worth a check-in here.

thanks in advance :))

Moose Snot

I don't post here often because most topics are already covered much better than I am capable of. However, today I came across an issue that I haven't seen covered before.

About a month ago, we left the Tradewind unattended up in the Bighorns for a few days. When we returned, there were smudges all around the trailer about six feet from the ground, and one of the turn signal lights was turned askew. Other evidence scattered around on the ground suggested a malicious moose was to blame. I suspect it was checking out its reflection in the polished aluminum.

Today I went out to wash the Airstream, and the moose smudges did not wash off well. I had to get the Cyclo out and polish them out.

So, here's something to add to you checklists; wash moose snot off the trailer before it dries thoroughly.

1976 Airstream Ambassador 29 - Texas

Live the dream in this stunning 1976 Airstream Ambassador Land Yacht 29" - only two owners. Brand new interior designer details throughout. Sustainable cream bamboo floors, mod wallpaper and gold accents including kitchen backsplash. Spacious MagicChef oven, 4-burner range, large fridge and freezer, A/C and Heater, ALL fully functional. Pioneer surround-sound system. Brand new electric lift. Sway-bar kit new as of Jan. 2014. Some scratches and dents on exterior - please see photos for specifics. Awning in great condition and fully functional. Sleeps 4 comfortably, with plenty of space in front room for a full-size air mattress if another pair of friends drops in.

Two queen beds with new memory-foam mattress toppers in divider-separated rooms with privacy. Cabinetry, sliding storage panels and amazingly spacious closets all in great condition. Original 1976 floral upholstery has recently been professionally cleaned. Both queen hide-a-beds covered in cream heavyweight canvas covers. Pull-out dining table for 6, converts to card table or desk. This RV makes the perfect office and also guest quarters for growing families--but it also does what it was designed to do (CAMPING) with style and efficiency.

Sizeable bathroom with full tub and accordion-style retro amber shower door. Surprisingly generous storage space throughout the RV. Considered a featherlite at only 4,540 lbs tow weight compared to other trailers in its class. Gently used 35-gal honeywagon included - great for those times a campsite doesn't include blackwater hookup. Don't miss out - she will go this week! $28,500 OBO. All reasonable offers considered - serious buyers only, please.

The upgrades we have made in the past six months include:

1) Install of sustainably-sourced cream bamboo flooring throughout, with the exception of the kitchen, which we kept in cream tile-surfacing.

2) 100% Non-VOC (non-toxic) Benjamin Moore paint on exterior flat-surfaces such as closets, trim and fold-out table. One partial can of paint left for any touch-ups and color matching in the future, along with samples/swatches of all other decor, from the wallpaper to an entire box of the gold honeycomb backsplash tiling, should you wish to tile more of the kitchen area.

3) Turquoise and gold Moroccan-style wallpaper on front-facing surfaces such as walls and bathroom door. Accompanying gold trim on adjoining surfaces.

4) Most of the cabinetry is ridged, and more experienced Airstream owners strongly advised me against painting these surfaces, so they are in their original deep faux-bois shade as you'll note in the photos.

5) Removal of curtains and install of convenient white light-blocking pull-down shades throughout, with the exception of the two curved windows in the front of the unit. Your options would be wide open for dressing or shading those two windows.

6) Replaced older-model hydraulic hitch lift (mechanism for raising the trailer on and off tow-vehicles) with brand new electric model.

7) Brand new sway-bar package (stabilizer bar and hitch unit to create safest possible tow conditions across terrain).

8) Professional winterization and recent maintenance of all storage tanks (large-capacity grey and blackwater tanks).

9) A/C and Heater checked in spring 2014 - this baby stays warm in the winter when needed and very cool in hot months - super important for wild climate swings!

View this specific model's floor plan at: http://ift.tt/1ubf7nJ (Scroll down to 29 FT. AMBASSADOR DOUBLE REAR BATH). This is the layout; you just have to "imagine" the divider walls.

Headroom in a Tradewind?

Hi, I'm an Airstream newbie wanna be and have been reading up on and researching different models for a renovation project. The tradewinds look most promising for what we have in mind, and there are a couple for sale I have my eye on. (Unfortunately nowhere near my home.) Can anyone tell me what the headroom is inside of a Tradewind? My husband is fairly tall, so that could be a deal breaker. Thanks!! Alison

Just Had a Oh Come On, You Have Got To Be Sh**ing Me Moment

Decided to check my generator oil and realized 2 things.

1) to unscrew the dipstick it hits on some kind of LP attachment and has to push it out of the way a little with each turn.

2) I can not remove the dipstick to check the oil without lowering the spare tire WTH

So, I guess I will loosen the spare just a little and see if I can get the dipstick out

Did I Goof?

Complete Newbie here -

Restore cars - never an Airstream, but am completely enjoying the experience.

I have one or two fairly significant scratches in my 1972 Overlander Land Yacht. I used 600 grit sandpaper (for 5 minutes at most) on the scratch - thinking that I could move up on the grit level to blend the scratch.

Then I realized that I could/might have removed some of the coating - as the area I sanded became lighter than the area I was already buffing.

Can I repair this - or do I need a new panel? I am going to try to buff it out with Nuvite today - and see what it looks like.

If a new panel is needed, I'll do that as well.

Can post a picture after I work on it again today.

Also, does anyone sell kits - or parts of kits, that fit into Airstreams - you know - couches, bunks, sinks, bathrooms. Haven't found a one on line - might be a business I'd consider starting (serial entrepreneur).

Thanks so much for helping me through this exciting restoration.

Also, - I want to add solar to my unit and A/C, in fact, will be replacing all of the major mechanicals - so if anyone could recommend the preferred vendors, I'd be thankful.

Ok, back to polishing.

Yosemite site size

I am planning trip to Yosemite I have a 26ft trailer and a 22ft truck. I was checking site map and found the largest sites are 35ft deep but the max trailer size is 24ft in these sites and was wanting to know if anyone has any advise on picking a site and if getting into site is possible. Thank you.

Classic rear end floor rot

Looks like I have the floor rot in the back end of my argosy 24. Last 8 inches of floor turned to dust along with the wooden 2X4 ends. I believe I must take out the bathroom to effect a repair on this. The way everything is interconnected I figure the twin beds come out first, then the wall and pocket door, and then the bathroom fittings. Do I have it right or is there an easier way. The frame is still good. there is no sag or droop in the back.

Mesa, AZ Campground Recommendation January '15

My husband and I are looking for a nice, smaller RV campground that allows a one month rental, in January 2015. Any Phoenix folks with any information on places to consider and the ones to avoid? I've been to RVCampground reviews and the reviews are so varied, it's hard to know what to believe! Thanks for any help!

Short term storage in cold climates

I am brand new to RVing and plan on doing 2 week trips from my home in PA. What can I do for storage when I am home for a few weeks in the winter? Is it just a matter of draining all of the water. It will be cold enough to freeze things when I am home between trips so I don't want anything damaged but also don't think a full winterization is a good idea once a month. I probably will be traveling once a month in Jan, Feb and March.

Thanks for the help

Leaking exhaust

My new to me '94 30' LY M/H has a noise that sounds a little like a loose valve lifter but it goes completely away at idle and under light load. It gets loud under heavy load. Does this sound like an exhaust leak? I understand that the 454s are prone to cracked exhaust manifolds. I can't see any leak or obvious cracks. Could it be a worn rocker arm? I seem to recall that a loose rocker is noisy at idle? It's been many years since I've had this kind of problem and I guess I've forgotten more then I remember.

Pioneer MIXTRAX - How do you use fader?

Hello,

Does anyone know how to get the fader to work on the Pioneer MIXTRAX radio? When I go to the Fader menu it is locked on CENTER and does not allow to change. There is no sound out of the "back" speakers and only sound coming from the two speakers in the "front" by the bed. I have a 2014 International FB.

Thank you!

Getting title on a "Junked" airstream CA

Just bought a 1965 Overlander 26 International.

It's gutted and needs a major restoration.

Problems are:

I only got a CA registration that dates Issued 1/11/94 Expired 1/31/94 and has the correct Vehicle ID numbers but it says JUNKED".

Got a hand written bill of sale from Ken X to the man I bought it from dated 10/2/96. He had it in a barn for 17 years as storage.

The man I bought it from gave me a hand written receipt.

13070 is the WBCCI number

Can any one give history or title advice please:

Young full-timers just bought first Airstream! (Socal)

Hello friends,

My wife and I just bit the bullet and bought a 2007 Safari 28ft. I am a lamp designer by trade (former Disney animator) and my wife is a nurse at Providence. We wanted to start saving some real money and get on top of our student loans. After crunching the numbers, this was the most efficient way to do it. (After all, rent in LA was costing us 1625$ a month without utilities.) We just wanted to say hello to all of you, and that we look forward to scouring these forums for the much needed information I know we will be looking for. Just a few pictures to start out with. Please feel free to give us some advice since we are new to this.

Thanks,

-Evan and Elizabeth

P.S. We bought the trailer from a metal worker who designed a custom rear bumper with detachable flag poles. A few other neat mods as well. Looks pretty cool to us!

Need help fixing Black Water valve

A few weeks ago we purchased a '99 Safari 25' from an individual and haven't taken it on our first camping trip yet. We just finished replacing the carpet which involved removing the toilet. While reinstalling the toilet and checking for water leaks, I ran 2-3 gallons of water into the black water tank. When I took the cap off the drain pipe, much, if not all, of the water came out. The valve was closed so I suspect it is defective in some manner. Anyway, the waste tanks and the fresh water tank have a cover which doesn't appear to give access to the valve without dropping the entire cover. Before I dive into this, I'd like to hear from those who have replaced a black water waste valve on a '99 Safari. Your help and advise will be much appreciated.

73 Argosy

Hey All!

I have a 73 Argosy with an oddity... it has a trunk. It appears to be factory installed. The frame extends back past the main body then a trunk is added. The rivets are the same as the rest.

My theory is the factory had either a special order or it's the last off that run. They had a 24' frame/chassis and a 22' body.

Any body have any ideas?

Securing your trailer...

I'm a beginner and may be asking a question with an obvious answer but here goes: how does one secure his or her trailer when one leaves for most of the day? Is there a way to lock the wheels? Additionally, is there a better method in securing your Honda generators (probably two 2000s) to a truck or trailer than the use of a chain or cable?

Thanks in advance,

Roof sealer removal and fins ?

The roof of our Sovereign has this gray hard sealer on a lot of the roof like around the A/C unit and added super cool vents. The sealer looks like something used on mobile homes.

It seems a bit gritty, it is silver or grayish in color and very stiff, even hard. It is not as hard as concrete per say, but much harder and stiff than Vulcum or Henry's tar based sealer. It does appear to be tar based, but closer to an asphalt.

What do you folks think about a little heat to soften it, I have a commercial grade heat gun and a mild propane torch { I know aluminum is finicky with a torch, I would be very careful}???

Second, Along the side of the A/C it looks as though someone has added the fins. They are aluminum angle screwed down to the roof parallel to the ac unit running front to back. They stick up about 3-4" off the roof. I am guessing for water condensation or something.

Are these needed? Are they standard on AS when they have A/C?

Just curious if I should remove them...kinda ugly and do not seem necessary to me.

Thanks

from Italy to hamburg like AS' hunter

Hi friends, this is Luca and Clo from Lake of Garda, Italy. Do you remember us? Recently we've posted our new entry on Member Introductions, now we are here to tell you our first car trip around Germany for a date in Hamburg with Daniel Goldt. He is a guy getting an imported AS' store, ready for restoring. Amazing! Daniel gave us many good informations about his great job. We just understand the real problem about empty shells from US e could be able to set up and restore the roof, the floor... changing wheeles, brakes and electric system, but the great problem is the American pipe that is not good for European towing. I guess this is the real problem because is not simple to replace the pipe. It's the end of the chassis! But if Daniel is able to do it why I and Clo couldn't do it in the same way? What do you think about? For now we only get a little AS’ toy but in the future...why not? Hi all.

Help! STAT! With my dometic fridge

I'm a pretty new AS owner. We just headed out for a long weekend, and I switched the Dometic 'fridge to "Gas." It's giving me the blinking flame icon and the blinking triangle/exclamation mark/warning. I can't find this in the documentation.

Yes , the gas is on. (No, I don't want to engage in that debate again. If worse comes to worst, I get to buy a 25.)

As far as I know, both gas cylinders are at least 1/3 full . The burners on the stove light, so there's gas.

Can someone give me a quick answer on what's going on?

(I'm signed up for "instant carrier pigeon notification" so I'll get your responses right away. Thanks in advance.)

Oh No! Raining on the Inside

So we have had this trailer for 7 months now. Not a single leak. One time I thought it was leaking but later figured out it was water from the upholstery cleaner I was using on the walls.

We are camped at Sebastian Inlet, FL for a pet shakedown cruise. Last night we got a real rainstorm. Lasted about 30 minutes. DW opened the hanging locker at the foot of the roadside twin and stuff in there was wet. It looks like water ran down the back side of the vinyl ceiling until it hit the junction with the mouse fur and then transitioned to the inside. The mouse fur was pretty wet, but not soaked. Looking around found the foot of the bed wet also with water soaking down the mouse fur until it hit the bed platform.

I went outside and took a look to see if I could spot a potential entry point. The leak area is significantly forward of the window. I don't think water from the window could run horizontally quick enough to get to the leak point on the inside. The most obvious possible source is the roadside awning rail. The rain was blowing up from the curbside rear. My guess is it piled up against the awning rail. Either I have a new crack in the sealant or when stored at home the trailer is slanted enough and the storm direction is different enough to keep that from happening.

We are headed home today. I was planning to clean up the trailer and put it back in storage until ready to leave for Alumalina, but now I guess I have work to do. Ordered the sealant kit from Airstream with Acryl-R, two Sikaflexes (white and grey) and another sealant for the banana wraps and down. As soon as it comes I guess I'll be up top cleaning up old sealant and re-sealing. I wanted to do that around the front vent and TV antenna anyway as the caulk in that area didn't look so good. Sloppy job originally or more caulk slapped on on top of original, couldn't tell which on quick inspection. I also wante to try to stiffen up the area around the TV antenna with some spray foam to stop some oil canning.

I'll report back with findings and results. If anyone has any other suggestions for places to look or suggestions for getting up old sealant please let me know. Hope it doesn't rain for a few days.

Thanks,

Al

'82 310 drivers captains chair

So....IS there a way to rotate the drivers seat to face the lounge area? I have the original captains chair and base unit(all manual). If not, has anybody modified the original seat or base to be able to rotate 180? It seems that if the slide mechanism would move a couple inches further forward, or if the back of the chair were able to tilt forward a bit one could rotate it to face the lounge area. The steering wheel is what needs to be cleared. Does anyone know of a brand or type of new captains chair that would work. It would be nice to be able to use the chair as seating when camped.

Smartstream or Keyair, surely you fellas have worked this out already :).

1991 Airstream Excella 25 - Missouri

Title: 1991 Airstream Excella 25 - Missouri

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

Our trailer has always been stored inside a building since it was new. Original carpet has never been shampooed, only vacuumed. Clear coat, stripes, window curtains, couch, powered roof vents, etc., are all original, and in near perfect condition. The factory applied red tape on the awning latch is one piece of evidence of the overall condition. Our trailer had very little use when we acquired it several years ago, so as a preventative maintenance item, I ordered new factory spec axles, powder-coated with large brakes. I also have the brakes, and backing plates that came off the original axles that are in great shape. This upgrade might not have been necessary, but torsion axles loose their elasticity if they have not been properly exercised (driven). This translates the shock of the road to the trailer, and can shake it to the point of breaking heads off interior rivets that hold the interior panels to the frame, and many other bad things. Many Airstreams have compromised (rotten) floors. Our trailer's condition is consistent throughout the entire unit, near perfect. I can provide additional pictures on request to demonstrate. Most Airstreams have had the entry door handle replaced because of so much use. Ours as everything else is original, and works perfectly. All cabinets have the factory applied plastic over the carpet, including the outside storage compartment. Most trailers advertise ready to use condition, which may be true. Ours is that, and so much more. When camping, our doorbell (yes that also works as well) often rings with a request for us to show our camper. I usually end up in a friendly argument when they ask what year it is. No one believes it is a 1991. All systems, a/c, water heater, fridge work perfectly. The oven has never been used, and looks new. The toilet is original, and has the instruction stickers on the inside of the lid. The bedroom has a queen bed. The only reason we are selling is that we bought a motorhome.

Early Airstream and Curtis Wright interior paint colors

Howdy all. I have been working on a 1948 Curtis Wright trailer for several months, and am ready to paint the interior. The original color was a fairly dark green. After stripping off 4 coats of paint, I have bare aluminum walls to paint. I really don't like the green color so I wanted to know if any one has come up with the "desert sand" or "soft peach" color match that I believe was offered in these old Airstreams. I would think that the CWs and the early Airstreams probably had the same interior color choices. I think a warmer lighter color would look great and highlight all of the interior components of the trailer. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Chris

LT or ST, that is the question

I've been reading all the posts and opinions on LT tires vs ST tires, and I haven't seen suggestions for widths below 235. My Argosy is equipped with ST205/75/R15 and there is precious little room between the sidewall and wheel well. I would like to convert to LT, but I don't think that a 235 tire will safely fit. It looks like I'm stuck with ST tires - or am I? I can't believe that my Argosy is the only trailer out there that needs 205 width tires.

What was the standard tire size back in the 70s and earlier? I know at some point radials replaced bias tread tires, and I think size nomenclature changed around the same time.

Wobbly Table

The table in our 2014 Flying Cloud wobbles in the brackets. It wobbles some horizontally, but mostly side to side in an up/down fashion. Any suggestions on adjustments to have it become stable? Should the L-brackets to the table be adjusted or the receiving bracket attached to the trailer under the front window? Or both? Thank you.
