Loose Connection at Negative Busbar

vendredi 4 juillet 2014

I was disconnecting the trailer when the tongue jack quit working. It had been making noise so I was afraid that it had finally died. A quick check showed the light didn't work either. Whew! A wiring problem is better than replacing the jack.

No power to the jack. No power at the fuse. No power at the positive battery terminal (measured to the ground lug inside the jack). What the ???

Measured to the negative post of the battery and everything is OK. A look at the wiring diagram shows the negative cable runs to a Busbar near the converter. Sure enough, the cable had pulled out. It was crushed like it should be from the clamp screw, but when I went to put it back in, the screw felt tight. I guess a strand of the wire got in the threads and made it feel tighter than it actually was.

With this failure, nothing battery operated was working, including the trailer breakaway switch operating the brakes. Vehicle brakes would have worked as they run from TV battery and ground.

Check your Busbar connections periodically. This would have been a real pain while camping. Luckily I was in my driveway.
