Vent fan

lundi 31 mars 2014

I just removed a broken roof vent from our 23' safari. It was the rear vent.

I'd like to install a new vent with a fan but there is no electrical at this site.

What is the best way to either run a wire from a light or run a new circuit?

I am a electrical novice.

Thanks

Kenwood receiver in 2014.5 Interstate

Is the Kenwood receiver supposed to be connected to the TVs or the Blu-Ray player? We brought home our new Interstate last week, and we haven't spent much time with it, but it's sure not obvious how or if those are connected. There are some audio and composite video cables near the Blu-Ray player that aren't connected, as well. Any ideas on those?

Otherwise, we had a nice weekend our in our "touring coach." The nicest part was no checklist when it was time to go.

How do you remove the bathroom counter?

I would like to remove the bathroom counter in my Argosy. I looked under the counter and can not see where I need to remove the fastners. Please help.

Any advice on the interstate that drops into the valley? Sounds scary!

Tank capacity questions

I have a 1977 25 foot Tradewind with a rear shower / bath. I am curious if anyone knows how many gallons my freshwater, gray water and black water holding tanks are.

Thanks in advance for your help.

icemaker

I have a question about how to shut off the water to the icemaker in my 1999 Land Yacht 355 XL on a ford Chassis. Anyone know how? As far as I can tell, the tubing just comes down into the back of the freezer with a solenoid but no other valve. It makes ice whether I want it or not.

'68 Globetrotter... NEWBIE.

I bought a '68 Globetrotter (20') a few months ago and have been silently gleaning crazy intel and "know-how" from this site... Thank you. ;)

When I bought my Airstream, Tonto, it had the proverbial issues (Floor rot in several places, electrical issues, windows shimmied-up with plexiglass, etc).

Having never owned a trailer but totally enamored with the allure of an Airstream (we can ALL relate, I'm certain), I decided to gut and refurbish my ride.

Here's what I have done, so far:

Removed entire interior (including all bathroom items, kitchen stuff, water heater, and furnace).

Removed tiled floor to reveal sub-floor rot in the bathroom, doorway, and in front of street side wheel well.

Removed all copper plumbing and replaced with Pex (installed 2 manifolds, one for hot and one for cold water).

Installed new 120v-in shore power (created cool placement where street-side furnace pipe went through inner/outer skin).

Sealed all leaks and removed all floor rot; outriggers, frame, etc were all in really good shape! Rust proofed and installed new sealed 3/4" subfloor.

I left the opening in front of the street side wheel well for the battery. I rust proofed all metal and sealed sealed subflooring in the area. I fabricated a sheet metal compartment for my battery to sit in. Installed a ground strap to the frame and battery post. I have vented the battery box through the belly pan and sealed the entire unit. This area has access via an access compartment door.

Installed several new 120v "drops" (bypassed aluminum wire inside walls).

Have new power inverter I will run, in lieu of Univolt set-up.

Removed both front and rear upper window channels, curb side (door) window channel, as well as both street-side upper window channels (5 total).

I am installing an "instant", tank less water heater (Propane) and a water filter system right after the holding tank and city water inlet (so every drop of water is filtered).

In addition, I just built an "outdoor shower unit" inside the bumper. This unit has hot/cold controls with a pull out wand... My main thoughts are for washing the dog, filling a big pot for boiling, rinsing feet, etc without having to go inside Tonto.

I will upload photos of before/after/during... um, as soon as I figure out the easiest most efficient way possible. :D

Thank you for your insight and I look forward to learning as I go.

Cheers!

Micro Pulse Monitor Sensors

Has anyone any experience changing the sensors on the various tanks, black, grey, and fresh? My black tank sensor and my fresh water sensor are both not working. Is it worth trying to do myself or should I just bite the bullet and have it done by a dealer service tech?

I have a 2007 34 Classic.

I can't even see them at this point, let alone change them.

Thanks for any comments.

Galley slideout

I just bought a 99 Airstream Land Yacht 355XL on a Ford Chassis. My Galley slideout quit working, and seems not to be getting electric power to the controller box under the slide. Airstream tech help was unable to help me find the fuse to it, which we suspect is the problem. The motor works and starts the slide moving if I directly connect the battery to the leads with a long wire. Has anyone had to locate the fuse before and can you help me find it? Also my right rear Power Gear jack is leaking slightly-can the seal in it be replaced? Are parts readily available?

Question for Onyx Edition owners

The Onyx edition Airstreams are growing on us as we look/consider a slightly larger AS. I especially like the flooring, but we are concerned about the texture. I'm hoping a forum member has one and can comment on the ease of cleaning the floor in the Onyx. We (me actually) have a no shoes policy in our current AS. We still get some dirt and food crumbs on the floor, but all it takes is a small brush/dust pan to clean. I want to make sure the texture doesn't hold "stuff".

Thanks

Pause script?

Curious if there is a way to pause a script that is going through a long wait statement?

wait loop 40

------------------

it would be nice to have another script/function that would pause the "wait loop 40", and when pressed again would pickup where you left off.

This is probably fantasy land as scripts may only be able to run from the beginning, not to mention you have to determine which script to pause, but thought I'ld ask anyway. ;o)

Rear leaks Classics

I have occasionally had water show up just at the lower corners of the trunk door down low at the floor. It appears that it is only while driving for long periods in the rain. The mouse fur gets wet only for about four inches horizontally at the corners of the door. I have removed the taillights and checked for wet insulation. I have checked where I can behind and above the lockers. I have checked all the interior carpeting. Nothing. I have the recessed license plate pocket and previously foam taped the top and sides of the pocket only. I left the bottom unsealed with the theory of water draining, but am wondering, since it only leaks while driving, if water is blowing up under the gap between the skin and the lower edge of the pocket.

I am also wondering about the piano hinge rivets for the door. I also wonder about blowing up under the lower rub rail and running rearward, but it seem odd that it would only be at those two specific spots.

Do any of you Classic owners have any suggestions? I have never had it leak in rain while stationary, nor have I had it leak in a water test simulating rain....but I have never tried simulating upward spraying water either below the pocket or the rub molding.

Florida Pool Home with 24' X 40' RV Barn

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

3/2/2 CBS Pool Home on large, 0.57 acre corner lot featuring mature oaks, palms, and pineapple plants! This charming house is located in a quiet, safe neighborhood less than 10 minutes from downtown Jensen Beach and the Treasure Coast Mall and approximately 20 minutes from downtown Ft. Pierce. As this home is less than 1/2 a block off Indian River Drive, there are peek-a-boo wide river views throughout the property.

Bring your toys! This property includes a 24' x 40' RV / boat barn / workshop that would be perfect for the auto enthusiast, RV'er, boater, or even for your home business. All three bedrooms have generous walk-in closets and plantation blinds. The attached two-car garage has (optional) central air conditioning which allows the possibility to use this as an additional room or for climate controlled storage of your vehicles.

The roof of the home was replaced in late 2004, and a heavily reinforced pool enclosure was added at that time.

Extras include a 10 zone automated irrigation system (well water), large fenced back yard, hurricane shutters, and a 10' x 10' gardening shed. All have been properly permitted.

Syncing Ableton Looper with another computer

I have a gig coming up where I want to improvise quantized loops with my guitar over some experimental dance beats that someone else has made and will manipulate in real time in cubase on another laptop. I want to sync the tempo of the Ableton Looper to the tempo of the Cubase beats.

But I am not sure how to do this. Hope anybody can guide me through this.

Don't want that if the other persons stops the beats that my loops also stop. Just want my loops quantize to the tempo of the other computer.

Volvo XC90

A friend of mine, his girlfriend is lurking to buy a small airstream.

Her current vehicle is a 2007 volvo xc90 V6.

I think the numbers are as follows:

"towing capacity" - 3790 lbs

Max Payload - 1550 lbs

She is looking I think in the 16-19' category....used....seems to be looking for <10k as far as cost.

I have no real clue about the parameters here for her....but she sounds as if she could impulsively buy any ol day now....

I told her to get someone to look at any one she may buy, inspect it..yah da yah dah....

Any guidance that I can pass on will be helpful....

Fresh Water Tank Leak

It is unbelievable to me that Airstream allows their name to be associated with such inferior work. Now that i have vented.

I recently purchased a 2011 Flying Cloud 23FB. I've never used it. Didn't know it had a leak until we got it home and filled with water. it drips once about every second. I've checked all of the external connections including the drain plug underneath. We cannot visibly determine where the leak is. So I assume the tank cover needs to be removed before further inspection. My question is this: Should I take it to a dealer and pay the $700 that it will take to get this repaired or attempt to do it myself. Anyone with experience please include your suggestions or recommendations. Thank you!

Renovating 1976 Argosy Airstream...what am I doing?!

Hello! I'm new here, so please let me know if I'm breaking all kinda rules! I just bought a partially gutted 76 Argosy at the start of this year. I'm going to renovate it myself, probably with some help from friends, and it will be my year round home. Currently she has no flooring, just sub floor which feels and looks to be in decent shape. However, it looks like the previous couple of owners have sort of made up their own style of wiring (this is so not good haha). I have someone (who I trust and know is completely capable) who is going to do the re-wiring for free minus cost of materials. I'm thinking I don't want to/can't get too deep into any other reno at this point until the wiring is done. I also slept in it part of last night and boy was it cold. So, insulation? I guess really I need a couple starting points to get this going. And probably some encouragement because I've never done anything like this before :)

I know that's not a lot of info but I have no earthly idea where to start! Thanks!

I am renovating a recently purchased 67 Safari to use as a boutique. The original pieces are in great condition and I hate for them to go to waste. As I am definitely a newbie, I am unsure how to price them so will just rely on others to make me a fair offer. I have the original refrigerator, stove, sink, freshwater holding tank, both side cabinets, back cabinet as well as the bathroom in great condition. The only item I do not have for the bathroom is the toilet though I do have the toilet cover. The kitchen cabinets also have the magazine rack on the side of them. I will also be removing the wall with the pocket door between the living area and the bathroom. All of these items are in great shape. Please let me know if you are interested and I can and will send you pictures of the items.

Thanks!

B-190 van late model holding tanks

Hi, all.

First time Airstream owner, and new forum member.

I am getting my 1999 B190 ready for our first season, and I am having trouble matching up the owner manual instructions for dumping the holding tanks with what I actually see under the van. I have not tried dumping yet, just trying to get ready. This is the later model bathroom layout with the toilet on the driver side facing the center and the vanity sink and stand up shower in the center.

Page 19 of the owner manual indicates that you dump and rinse the black water tank, and then repeat for the grey water tank, but I can't see any separate dump valves for the two tanks.

System diagram for below floor plumbing (drawing #943495 dated 2/25/97) identifies a 1.5" gate valve for the grey water tank, and a 3" gate valve for the black water tank, both leading to a 3" bayonet ring and cap at the rear.

I don't see any gate or slide valves other than the 3" slide gate valve right at the outlet at the left rear of the van. Looking under the rear of the van, and at the waste line routing, it looks like both holding tanks are contained within a single sheet metal enclosure, at the very back of the van, just ahead of the tow hitch, with no access to individual tank outlets.

Can any owners of the late-model post-1996 190's confirm the dump procedures for me?

Thanks!

Welding on frame harm electric systems?

What year is my Airstream?

I just purchased a Airstream Land Yacht -- I was told it was '78 and was wondering if that could be verified. The number stamped by the door is I31-D7J-1762...any information that can be provided on my new Airstream would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

What size rivet for lower belt line.

I'm doing a repair on the bumper area of my 1986 Sovereign. I need to remove the belt line. What size rivets should I get to reinstall it? I'm pretty certain they're 1/8" but I need to know what grip range I should get.

Sharp Microwave Problem

A few days ago the microwave portion of our Sharp R820bk Carousel convection oven ceased working.

The convection portion still works.

To put it on the local repair man's bench is $45. a new one is $280.

I opened the back and found the mounts of a cooling fan had shaken loose and fixed that -- but it still doesn't work on microwave.

I hate to discard something that may still have value if I can fix what is broke.

I talked to Sharp, two Airstream dealers, and the local repair shop and none of them had ever heard of such a problem. Could the magnetron have gone bad?

The unit is 9 years old.

Any ideas?

Suggestions for securing cushions; factory solution is a joke.

Hi,

Took delivery of a brand new 2014 27FB International Signature last week and have spent several days setting it up and working out a few kinks. My girlfriend and I absolutely love the new trailer but, as I imagine isn't news on this forum, build quality could be improved.

One thing that I'm miffed about is the Velcro strips used to fasten all our Flint fabric cushions to the benches. The bond between the two pieces of Velcro is so strong, and the bond between staples and wood so weak, that when lifting a cushion the Velcro and staples are ripped from the bench... I thought perhaps I had been too forceful when removing the cushion but we quickly discovered that no mater how carefully you try to work the two pieces of Velcro apart as you lift a cushion the staples will pull out of the bench. All four cushions that are secured via Velcro have this problem.

The few staples that were used were haphazardly shot into the Velcro (very sloppy job), I'm sure putting a larger quantity around the perimeter of the Velcro strips would help, but given how poorly staples worked originally I'm hesitant to double down on that method.

Does anyone have any suggestions with regards to securing cushions? Should I find staples with serrations and or glue the Velcro down before stapling? Is there a better method?

I know it's a pretty innocuous problem, but figured I'd petition for some wisdom.

Cheers,

Stephen

reattaching cast metal letters with damaged posts.

I removed the pot-metal "AIRSTREAM" letters from the back panel of my trailer as I needed to replace the panel. Despite my best efforts to be careful, many of the little pot-metal posts that have the threaded nut on it holding the letter in place either got completely twisted off, or at least shortened. So I am looking for a clever way of reattaching them. I have seen the recommendations to just use a pop rivet and then paint the rivet, Have also considered drilling through all the letters and using a screw and nut or screw and threaded insert--but figure this might look even worse than the rivet.

The only source I could find for a replacement is at Vintage Trailer supply for a whopping $40 a pop. It is nice that they are machined aluminum, but is well outside my budget. Anyone know of some other more affordable source for the cans or some hack replacement? :hammer:

Abelton+Mobius+ FCB1010?

Hello guys!

I'm new in using Abelton and Mobius, I bought a fcb1010 2 weeks ago, and I can't configure it. So, here's my problem. Abelton is working great with guitar rig, but when I activate Mobius in Abelton, suddenly the output disappears.

And I have another question. Why every time when i open Mobius as a Vst in Abelton my midi settings from Mobius disappears and I have to configure Mobius every time I open it in Abelton?

So, these are my problems. If someone know how to configure it out, please let me know. Cheers!

P.S. Sorry for my bad english :(

Just won 2012 Airstream EXT - few questions

dimanche 30 mars 2014

Hi - I am SO excited. We just were the high bidders for a neat Airstream Interstate Extended version. I was wondering what the best way is to get internet while we are on the road driving. I noticed people talking about the TV's that come with the 2012, something about BlueRay/Samsung, etc. Are the tv's ok that come with the 2012, or do they need to be upgraded? I am now researching the Viper vs Drone alarm system! Trying to think of everything. Any advice would be appreciated. Is there any sory of mattress cover people commonly use when the bed is folded out? Any special sheets?

Fridge vent impossible to close when plugged in?

Hey everyone!

1978 Trade Wind fridge vent/rear access door has no way to close when plugged in to electric. The cord itself prevents it from closing completely. I've resorted to covering in plastic bag and duct tape ALL WINTER! (I live in my AS).

Am I missing something?? It's driving me crazy and it makes my outdoor space look like Sanford and Son!

Thanks,

Sassy

PS: limited internet but will have access 2 more days

1972 Airstream Overlander 27 - California

Title: 1972 Airstream Overlander 27 - California

We just listed our 1972 Airstream Overlander for Sale on Airstream Classifieds.

Year: 1972 Make: Airstream Model: Overlander Length: 27'

Viewing of this classic Overlander will be on Saturday (4pm) and Sunday (1pm) April 26th / 27th in Alameda, California.

Original 1972 interior, with the exterior shell in good shape, ready for a polish. This Airstream has moved from covered storage in Benicia earlier this year and is road worthy. Converted to grey waste tank. This Overlander would be a good restoration project for someone who prefers all the vintage Airstream parts such as gas lamps and convection ovens. Vintage Zip-Dee awnings, Electrolux oven, propane lamps and many other original parts. Great for someone looking to rehab a trailer for an office, to travel, go to Burning Man, or use as a food truck.

Title and registration paperwork are clear and ready to be transferred. Buyer must pick up and transport Airstream within 24 hours of purchase.

Vent stack question

I replaced the vent pipes for both the grey and black tanks today. While doing so I noticed the rubber flanges attached to the tanks that the pipes slide into are just a slip fit. They vent pipes were not glued to the rubber flanges on the tank nor did they have a hose clamp or anything else to seal them. Is this normal?

2000 Airstream Bambi 19 - Florida

Title: 2000 Airstream Bambi 19 - Florida

We just listed our 2000 Airstream Bambi for Sale on Airstream Classifieds.

Year: 2000 Make: Airstream Model: Bambi Length: 19'

We have had a love affair with our Bambi for the last 7 years, but it is time for us to step up in size and start a new chapter in our Airstreaming life. With like new finishes in and out, we are often asked if it is brand new. Stainless steel water heater door & exhaust vent, flush cockpit door handle on bath, and new beltline trim were added a few years ago by Jackson Center. We added a hot rod to the 6 gallon water heater for both electric & propane operation. All equipment in perfect working order. The A/C has an electric heat strip. Other custom modifications include: a nook over the fridge area with microwave oven, indirect lighting, and space for your full sized coffee maker; a secondary door added to the bathroom door to allow the bath to become a square room big enough to change in (no more crossing left leg over right while taking care of business); brushed aluminum accent tile backsplash in kitchen and in vanity areas; LCD TV w/built in DVD player mounted for viewing from the dinette or while in bed; LED reading lamps over bed; an exterior retractable 25' wash down hose; marine grade hyper bright LED lights under body for illuminating camp site and light on tongue for illuminating flags (all controlled by illuminated interior switch); flag holder accommodates 3 typical home style flag poles; automatic flip leg on front jack stand; Optima Blue top gel-cell battery; Maxxis 8008 10 ply rated tires with less than 2,000 miles (the best 15" trailer tire available!); Winegard Wingman antennae for excellent TV reception; Fantastic Fan w/in&out switch; and brushed nickel accents throughout. No model year since has offered so much storage with 6 overhead cabinets, 5 lower cabinets, 2 drawers, food pantry, magazine rack, and exterior rear storage compartment.

Character marks on the exterior include: a small depression near top of roof over rear street side, 8" crease line on bottom of same area, 2 rock hits on front street side (no hail damage), all pre-dating our ownership. She was bathed regularly and waxed seasonally so the clear is in great shape with very deep reflection.

Best Niagara Falls Campgrounds?

Hello all, I'm looking for some help/recommendations on nice campgrounds in Ontario around Niagara Falls. We're thinking of making a trip up to Niagara Falls this summer, probably about a week. We would like to stay in a nice campground with full hookups in Canada. We want to make one or two day trips to Toronto sightseeing and visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame.

We would be camping with two kids (9 & 12), but the dogs will be staying home.

Sorry, I''m sure this has been discussed before, however my forum search results were not providing much help.

Thanks!

Eric

Door lock

I was trying to find out if any one was having an issue with their door handle lock locking when door is shut.

I have had it at the dealer twice now for this problem since I was passing through and they can't seem to get it fixed.

I didn't know if airstream was having door handle issues with 2011 flying clouds.

Airstreams at Fort Wilderness

I just returned Friday from a 3 week vacation at Disney s Fort Wilderness in Florida. I like to ride the camp loops at least twice a day while I'm there and was surprised to see that Airstream was well represented this trip. On average there where at least 10 to 12 and up to 18 in the park at a given time.

I was just surprised to have seen so many at a given time.

Best easiest to TV reception>

Just bought a 2007 Classic 27FB. What is the best way for my to go as far getting TV signals. I've heard some about these portable Satelites that set themselves up by looking for the signal and can go through trees and such. Winegard has one for $700. Any thoughts. Thanks Bob

honda generators

Just bought a Honda 2000i generator for my Airstream. Is it worthwhile to get the propane conversion kit. And can I use the tanks on the front of my Airstream for that and my barbecue grill. Also I was looking at these portable compressors with backup battery power. Are their any out there with enough power to run say the TV for a couple of hours? Thanks Bob

Bike rack

Hi my name is Bob and we just bought a 2007 classic 27FB. We're avid bikers

and we bought a Arvika bike rack that sits over the propane tanks. Does anybody know of a bike cover that will hold up to all that wind. I looked on Amazon and the main complaint with their covers was they fall apart real fast. Also I was wondering why people don't carry their bikes inside the Airstream when traveling. Any info would be really appreciated.

Fraud / Hackers / Scams - Look out when selling in the classifieds!

Hello All!

I wanted to let everyone know about potential hackers and scammers on the Airstream Classifieds site. I have my Airstream listed there for sale (2010 Airstream International 27 for sale in Calgary, Alberta) and have received some fraudulent inquiries for it. I have spent my career in software so I have seen many of these scams over the years. The shocking thing is that they are still doing these scams as they do get the odd trusting person to fall for them. There was a case near me a couple of months ago where a couple bought an AS and never got it as it did't exist, and lost their money.

So, I have received some of these inquiries from the Airstream Classified site, so these predators are combing the site looking for opportunities. Here is one example. I was contacted through the classifieds site by a person looking to buy my AS. The email looked a little off so I checked into it. The emails through the site shows the IP address of the person sending the email. They said they were from Wisconsin but their IP was in Africa and their phone number was California. So unless they are traveling a lot around the world, this should be a first red flag. After digging deeper I discovered this was a scam trying to get my Airstream without paying for it. I had 2 of these yesterday alone.

Here are some guidelines when buying / selling online:

- When getting an email from the classifieds you will get the users IP address, use a tool like this one to see where they are sending the email from: IP Address Lookup This will give you the information about where they sent the email from, so if they say they are down the street yet their computer is around the world, this should raise some concerns.

- Check the users profile on this site. Go to the page Airstream Forums - Members List and click on the Search Member link in the top right of the member list, then enter in the member id you got in the email they sent you. If they just joined that day and have no history this should potentially raise some more concerns for you.

- ALWAYS meet face to face, meet in a public place where there are other people around.

- Never send or wire money to sellers or buyers. This includes mailing a cheque or using payment services like PayPal, Square Transactions, Online Jumble Sales, eTradeDepot, Gizmagdepot.com, Rent Monitor, Amazon Payments, Bidpay, Google Wallet/ Checkout, Canada Post, Western Union or Money Gram. While these sites can be very useful and secure, typically scammers are only pretending to use them and will even go so far as to falsify documents from a legitimate company.

- A lot of scammers will request that they communicate only by email. Don't fall for this, always talk to them on the phone before getting in too deep.

- Never give out your personal information. I had one yesterday looking for my email address, paypal account, paypal email, home address, home phone number, etc... and they would wire me the money and would get a shipper to pick up the AS, sight unseen! They will even go as far as asking for your bank information so they can send you the money. This screams fraud and don't fall for it!

- There is often a delay in answering your emails as they are somewhere else around the world and day may be night for them, just another potential flag.

- Most of all, if it is too good to be true, it probably isn't true...

A couple of helpful links with information in addition to what I have written above:

- Tips for avoiding Cars and Vehicles Scams

- Tips for avoiding Reply Scams

Sorry for the long email on this! I have seen some very trusting people caught in these scams in the past and they have lost a lot of money. This is not their fault, all they did wrong was trust others to be good honourable people. Unfortunately, there are some people in this world who are not so honest...

Thanks!

Simon.

2014 Toyota TV - Highlander vs 4Runner?

Hi -

We will be towing a 1966 Safari Double - 22ft in the summer when the ice finally leaves MN! We have a 2002 Toyota Tundra but also looking to replace the other family vehicle. The Tundra has a pretty small back seat which was ok when the kids were very small but getting smaller by the month now that they're getting older. My musts are 3 rows of seats to carry at least 6 people (2 of my kids plus various neighbor kids, cousins, etc). We would only be towing with 4 of us though. I've narrowed it down to the Toyota Highlander Limited or 4-Runner Limited.

According to spec's, the Highlander is actually rated to carry a bit more weight than the 4-runner (5k vs 4700)

4Runner: http://ift.tt/1ofU4BH

Highlander: http://ift.tt/1ofU7x6

Is one clearly a better tow vehicle than the other? Are there any modifications I should plan on making to it right away to make it a better tow vehicle beyond the tow package?

Key for outside utility shower door?

Hi all,

We lost all of our keys for our 2007 Safari 25FB. I'm all set on the main door but am now trying to figure out the outside compartments. By viewing other threads, I've come across the key chart for Airstream models and figured out the key I need for the water access (ordered it just now) but can't seem to figure out which key I need for the outdoor utility shower. There is no number printed on it. Is it the same key used for the battery compartment (we don't have a locking one but I see it in the chart)?

Also, the under bed/trunk compartment seems to be GH005 - anyone know where I can purchase this?

Airstream Pros and Cons 48 hours in

Forty-eight hours into my trailer experience with the Airstream, I thought I would offer some pros and cons. I haven't had it registered and titled yet in my home state so this is purely reactions to my drive home.

Airstream Pro: I got tired driving home, so I pulled into a rest area... and rested.

Airstream Con: I didn't get much rest due to people knocking at the door to look inside.

Airstream Pro: She tows a beaut at 65 mph.

Airstream Con: She doesn't travel through time at 88 mph.

Airstream Pro: All the people waving as they pass, you would think the trailer was farting rainbows, kittens and puppies!

Airstream Con: The thought of a trail of kittens and puppies saddens me.

More later; after I've camped in her once or twice.

remove sliding bathroom door

Does anyone have experience replacing roller hardware on the sliding bathroom doors?

The bathroom pocket door on my 67 Tradewind has been stuck for some time. I investigated the problem and found that one of the hanging rollers on which the door is suspended is missing a wheel (each hanger originally had two wheels) and this seems to be causing the problem -- the door hangs lower than it should because of the missing wheel, so it drags on the floor while closing, and while opening it catches on the floor and jams, and you have to physically lift the door (squatting on the floor) to get it to slide into the pocket.

The roller that is damaged is the one that's harder to access, because it remains inside the pocket even when the bathroom door is fully closed. I have managed to remove the front roller, with the intention of turning the door into the bathroom to remove it from the track, but I still can't turn it far enough to access the rear roller.

It looks like the only option is to remove one side of the bathroom wall or the other, in order to get access to the track and the rear roller. This seems like it will be a great deal of work, so if anyone knows another trick for getting this door out or replacing the hardware while leaving the door in place, I'd like to hear about it.

Use it while Winterized

This has been a rough winter, and it keeps teasing us with a few warm days followed by a hard freeze. I've seen several remarks where folks have dewinterized then needed to quickly get winterized again.

Well, here's an alternative - A friend of mine who hasn't been on the forums for a long time showed me this SIMPLE way to use his Airstream in the dead of winter.

You need a working battery and full propane tanks, bottled water, a teapot or pan, two towels & a washcloth or two, and a drywall tub 1/3 full of kitty litter.
drink the bottled water

sponge bathe with heated bottled water

make hot beverages with bottled water

run the furnace with propane or heaters with electric if you have it

if there are no shower houses, or for 2:00 am usage, figure out what the kitty litter is all about

There is no reason you cannot use any camper on a nice weekend early in the season without worrying about how to get re-winterized in a huge hurry.

Every winter in the past I've gone through the ritual of making up a heated white water hose, and twice I've had the heat tape short out. This winter I did the simple disconnect the hose and carry it inside trick. It's a "wake up" to run outside and reconnect it before having a shower, and trying to skip ANY of the layering because it's only a minute or two to get the thing hooked up - brrrrrr! I quickly decided to always keep the white tank just half full - and was able to keep it from freezing too.

Sometimes we do overthink things in the name of "comfort"

Rude on the highway--what's wrong with people?

In a sense, this is a double post, because I initially posted something like this in the early morning hours of Friday, just after we got back from picking up our 22 Sport. I was kind'a angry. I think perhaps my language was a little too full of asterisks and wingdings standing in for the vowels of pretty rank Anglo-Saxon epithets. Which might be why it disappeared from the forum as fast as cash on a Congressman's desk.

But anyway, driving back from Orlando, up I-75--four hours of it in the pitch dark--I noticed that a whole bunch of people drove with their brights on. At first, I thought it was just passenger cars, and of course I imagined little old people from Florida driving home for the Spring to New Jersey, just barely able to see over the steering wheel. But then I noticed it was big pickups, commercial vans, sports cars-, even TVs pulling trailers-all drivers who should have known better.

I grew up on the highways in Texas in the 70's and 80's, and you almost never saw anyone doing this. So whether it's the 21st Century, or I-75, or Florida, or Georgia, I don't know. But it makes me wonder: what's wrong with people? Don't they know what this does to other drivers? Or maybe they don't know where the switch for their brights are?

And... what do you do about it? I have heard stories of dropping back behind them, pulling up on their bumper and keeping the brights on, with or without the emphasis of a horn. That seems kind of immature, not to say dangerous. But, is there any way to handle it?

How to use a headset on audio?

Has anyone figured out how to hook up a headset, bluetooth or otherwise, to be able to listen to TV or Audio while your spouse is sleeping?

I have tried two different bluetooth headsets on the SONY and although a guy at SONY told me it should work, it seems that bluetooth is for audio input. The TV nor the SONY have headphone jacks. The TV has a USB connection but the manual indicates that is for media play, pictures or music input. I have run out of ideas.

Where in NorCal to store AND camp--Some Help for a Newbie

Hi there, we're new to the forum and recently relocated from the East Coast (and prior to that the PacNW).

I am really stuck, and on the verge of selling our trailer because I can't find an easy way to use it nearby--but I thought to post on this forum to see if some people who know the NorCal area could help out. (would also consider putting the Airstream down in SoCal too).

Here's our situation...We live and work in the SF Bay area (live on the Peninsula), and have two kids ages 10 and 12. Between work and kids stuff we hardly have time to do long weekend getaways, and the set-up and break-down of a trailer and putting it back into storage (we can't store it on-site at our house) creates way too much time and friction. As a result, we hardly use our trailer which is a real bummer.

I am looking for a great year-round campground, somewhere that is preferably within a 3-4 hour drive of SF Bay (and preferably south, but doesn't have to be--and would consider putting it closer to LA/Santa Barbara/etc) where we could keep our trailer on-site in storage at a beautiful campground and then easily pull it out and rent a spot on-site for the weekend. OR ideally a campground that has on-site storage and they'll actually pull it out and set it up when you want.

When we lived in Virginia there was this great campground where they'd do this-that would be ideal, because we would love to get rid of our towing vehicle and buy something more efficient and would make the ability to go down for weekends so much more practical.

We're looking for a beautiful campground, could be near the water or simply in the woods, something that's great for families and has beautiful/relaxing scenery, good shower set-up and some amenities--but doesn't need to have things like a pool and whatnot. Would be ideal if it were near a cute town as well.

We prefer more heavily wooded scenery rather than the RV parking lot type, and the most important factor is ease of getting into it--especially if there's a campground that would do pull-in/out, which I know sounds lazy but when you work 80-hours a week and all you want to do is escape for 36 hours it's almost the only way it can happen--if the set-up is easy.

Thanks to the forum for any advice you can provide. Greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Raz

2003 Airstream Classic 27'

Hello,

I'm considering buying a 2003 Airstream Classic for $25,000. Is this a fair price for a unit has been well kept and is very clean ? Who are the best inspectors to use if you can find them ? I'm very new to Airstreams. I'm also considering buying a new regular trailer for $15,000. The seller said this is a 28' Classic. But it seems they don't make a 28'. Don't they make a 2003 27' FB Classic ? Is the classic the top of the line Airstream ?

Thank you for any advice and explanations.

leak in water pipe under shower tray

Hello. I have a 1976 Tradewind based in the UK. Was recommissioning after winter yesterday and a water pipe (probably the hot water pipe) has sprung a leak under the shower tray in the rear bathroom. The tray is the original an all-in-one-fibreglass piece with built in seat. I wondered if anyone knew how I could access the pipes without removing the tray as I am sure it will split when trying to remove it. Thanks.

Furnace/Heat Pump question

Ok boys and girls, get ready for some amusing newbie type questions regarding the interior heating system. When I set the Dometic controller to Furnace, the unit in the ceiling comes on and begins to blow cool air, and warm air begins to emerge from the floor-level vents. Eventually warm air flows from the ceiling unit too.

I know that the ceiling unit is the air conditioner, and I assume it is also the heat pump and perhaps the fan system for the furnace. The ceiling unit is noisy, kind of objectionably noisy.

The very brief Dometic manual doesn't tell me much. I wish it explained more about the relationship between the furnace and the ceiling unit (and it's functions). Perhaps someone would be kind enough to give a brief rundown of how the system works.

Here are the main questions I have:

Is the ceiling unit always on when the furnace runs?

Is there any way to turn the ceiling unit off when the furnace is running?

Thanks!

Brakes or new axle

I've got a 59 caravanner single axle with electric brakes which need to be replaced (one of the brakes pops a fuse when a charge is applied). Looking at my axle it appears to bow down about a quarter to half inch in the middle with a straight edge across the top. If you were in my shoes would you look to replace the axle(currently welded on) or just get new 12" brake assemblies?

Thanks

Light over bed /70 model question

Well howdy from Espanola New Mexico! I guess the winds of fate blew us up here.

I was was replacing the four lights in the fixture at the head of my bed in this twin sleeper 70 model. And I thought Iwould dis connect the two main wires that power it. And as I was replugging them back in, I seemed to have caused a short. The question is...do I check the fuse box in the outside compartment? I have my manual but have not checked whats running what-where. Any advice? By the way we are parked at an RV park that once had a Airstream Caravan come thru - they tell me. The name of the park is Roadrunner RV park...sits right between Santa Fe and Espanola.

Lots of old Airstreams on SC lot

Don't really know where to put this so perhaps an administrator will send it to the right place.

For years I have been hearing about a Airstream place in South Carolina on I-95 and yesterday I passed it. Could not stop as I was riding with others who wanted to get home.

It is located on I-95 at Exit 141 where one would get off the exit and turn South down frontage road on North Bound side. It is perhaps 1/2 mile from the exit.

I would estimate there was at least 40 and my guess would be most of them were 70s vintage with some older. The majority were 31 footers with two of the smaller ones. Another I would guess to be 50s vintage.

I snapped some pics with cell camera and as soon as I figure out how to download them to computer I could email them to anyone interested.

Hit me with a PM if you would l like to see them.

Sorry did not get a name.

Got me a 1953(?) Silver Streak 22' Clipper

We'll Greetings All,

I guess you will be helping me through the next 18 months of some good times. I'll post some snaps of my new purchase tomorrow. But think good shell with an interior consisting of PO installed plank flooring over the (?) condition plywood floor and the original toilet. As the only piece of the interior that last part sorta says a lot.

So I will be doing a slightly meandering approach to full restoration this girl needs. Yes I have done my homework and I do believe I have read every shell off floor/frame repair/pipe frame repair/skin repair w/replacement build and a few others like windows. A lot of hours, but I know where to look when I'm in trouble.

I have a general floor plan laid out, so I have a good idea of electrical, plumbing, and cabinetry needs. I know I need to deal with some exterior shell issues and will need to replace 1 to 3 panels street side and here in Portland the non rain 3 months are near, so... I will be removing all interior shell panels. Then I can remove all the insulation. Then, I have access to buck rivet in the new exterior panels. Reseal all seams. Then new insulation. Run the electrical. Run the kitchen and bath water and drain. Repair/replace/reprint interior panels. Leave lowest ones off for now. Deal with windows.

The lift the shell. Deal with frame issues. Install tanks (?). Insulate the frame area. Replace floor.

At this point it will be a new empty shell. I will be retiring and finishing the interior while living in it. The interior will utilize the compact yet comfortable layout of my previous VW Westphalias with the need for a small working wood shop and a very usable kitchen. I may try my hand at vacuum bagging the bigger bulkheads to save weight. Yes, I will be blatantly ripping off some ideas from d. Winnick.

So other than a bunch of new air tools, I will be getting both buck and Olympic rivet tools, maybe if needed a Mig welder, and definitely a Festool Plunge Saw for cabenetry.

So one thing I would like some help on is, Who is the expert on pipe frame concept, design, and repair? I will have access to do up to a complete replacement of the frame. I have access to a Water Jet cutter and can cut all the outriggers. I know someone with an 8 foot brake. I can even get a new pipe locally. So if I want to stiffen the frame like Dave W. did I can. I can also design in the new tanks.

Also, I will be taking a series of upholstery classes at night school. I can see dining Room dinette seats cushions in my future.

So busy times ahead.

Water Heater Repair

Hello,

I'm a newbie with an 2014 International Signature 25 foot Onyx Special Edition. I searched the forum for this water heater problem but couldn't find a thread. Hope I'm doing this posting correctly; apologies in advance if not; this is my first posting. Took delivery last month and have not been able to get the water heater to work. The unit came winterized so I inserted the drain plug in the external compartment and turned the ball valve (inside compartment) to in use. I then turn on one of the water heater buttons (one for gas and one electric located in bathroom - have tried both). The light to indicate a fault does not turn on. Water comes out when I turn the bath or kitchen faucets to hot but the water is cold. When I go outside to listen by the external water heater panel, I don't hear a flame. I also checked the fuse box; nothing seems wrong but am not sure which fuse is the right one to check. I've checked the AS manual and the Atwood manual but can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. The Atwood manual refers to a lock out situation and suggests resetting the switch (off then on) but I can't find any switch.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Rob

Carlsbad Campgrounds

Trying to plan a trip through the Davis Mountains in Texas and then to Carlsbad Caverns and back to Big Bend. Can anyone recommend a campground in or around Carlsbad and the Big Bend area?

Brand spanking new user!

I do not now own nor have I ever owned an Airstream. Having said this I have always admired them and very interested in buying one and restoring it. I am here seeking the knowledge and insight of folks in the know. I have several questions and any help would be very much appreciated. I just recently built my own teardrop trailer from the frame up so I think I am fairly versed in most of the skills required in the restoration. Is there any particular parts of a restoration project that would be better left to professionals? Can exterior panels be replaced by the amateur? If you replace a panel can the different panels be "matched" in appearance? Can the amateur polish an oxidized trailer to something close to new appearance? Can the skin be so degraded that it would be impossible to polish successfully? Are there any years or eras or models of the trailers that are best to avoid? Are there any that are preferred? My teardrop took about a year to do after work and on weekends so I have the patience to take project like this on, I think. I have many more questions but I am afraid if I put them all in here it would be even longer and no one would read the whole thing, lol. Again any assistance would be appreciated.

What is this

Anybody?

It is connected somewhere behind the stove and furnace...what is this thing for?

New owners of a 1982 '34 Limited

Hey folks,

I notice there's a "limited" amount of activity in this area, but I thought I'd add us to the list of owners of Limited trailers. We're just about to move it onsite and I'm hoping to post some pics soon.

We also have a 1986 345 AS MH, so we're not newbies, but I'm wondering what anyone here has noticed of things to be especially alert for in the systems that might need attention. Does this original plumbing and electric hold up reasonably well?

Ours was garaged most of the time and pulled out for use on the same spot ever since it was bought new in 1982. It looks like the furnishings and skin are in very good shape, but we weren't able to test the systems thoroughly.

Thanks!

93 Excella... Series or parallel?

Can you tell me from the photo if my 1993 Excella is series or parallel? I believe I fried my batteries by leaving it hooked up to shore power for too many months. I want to replace the batteries but not sure what to get. (I know you're saying to yourself look and see what you have and replace them, but I can't be sure it was done correctly the first time)

So is it possible to tell from the pic whether I have series or parallel? It looks parallel to me but the RV dealer had 2 6 volts installed.

How do I remove the bathroom counter top?

I have a 24' Argosy with the rear bath and I'm interested in removing the counter top and replace them with a quartz counter. I have looked under the sink and for the life of me can't figure out how to remove the darn thing. I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks

2014 Mods - Diesel Power Tuning Module

30 days until my track season starts and 90 days until I depart for my 48 day cross country jaunt. In both instances I will be towing a trailer. For track season a 900lb aluminum trailer with a 3600lb car. For the XC trip a 1050lb tear drop trailer.

In prep for those specific needs, I started researching functional upgrades that will make those tasks easier for the Interstate and more comfortable for the driver/passengers.

Easier for the interstate – power upgrade, transmission temp cooling strategies, chassis stability enhancements

Easier for the driver / passengers – chassis stability measures

What does that mean?

Power Upgrade – Renntech or Diesel Power software

Transmission – aux trans fluid cooler

Chassis Stability – suspension (shocks, anti-roll bar)

One big thing that I took away from racing cars was to make one change at a time so that if that one change it doesn’t provide you with the expected result you can undo it and so you can attribute any positive or negative data to that one change. I am using that mind set to initiate the non-electrical part of my development program for the Airstream.

I researched most of the power enhancement options for the 3.0L V6 diesel. Based on positive feedback and anecdotes garnished from various sprinter based sites, my first call was to Renntech. Unfortunately, they were not able to assist me as my Sprinter build date was past their development limit of their software. My chassis build date is 2/27/12. It appears that their software can only accommodate models up to 12/11. That was disappointing news but it is what it is.

I then called the sprinter store and asked for their feedback. They sell the European made 2 channel Diesel Power product which is an add on tuning module rather than an ECM re-flash. The Diesel Power Module is very German by design and quality. Interestingly, the plastic tubing that is used to protect the wire loom is made by the same company whose products my company sells stateside but for industrial purposes rather than automotive. The tubing is also OEM to BMW, Mercedes, AUDI and Ferarri :)

While the Renntech product claims some amazing power (188 -> 260+ HP) the diesel power solution is a lot more conservative but also manually adjustable in in 1.5% increments up to 25%. ( 0-37+ HP.) Diesel power achieves their gains by manipulating fuel rail pressure and turbo boost (up to a max of 2psi over stock). The idea is not to build max power but to increase useable torque. The module has 16 different power levels. I set mine 2 clicks from max, so 22%.

Now, I have read accounts that the Renntech product yields a blatantly obvious performance increase. The Diesel Power unit does yield benefits but is a lot more subtle in nature.

The install took less than 30 minutes. This afternoon I took my Sprinter for a 16 mile back road loop that featured level and undulating roads followed by some steep uphill climbs up the Sourland Mountain Range here in Central NJ.

From a sand still to road speed (0-45 mph) first gear felt unchanged up to about 2k RPM, then as my speed increased and the Sprinter started shifting through its gears I could feel a lot more midrange torque from 1800 RPM all the way to 3000RPM. I did a few standstill starts up hills and thoroughly enjoyed more torque in the aforementioned range. The Sprinter definitely powers up hills with more authority. On 0 – 45 mph accelerations on level roads the sprinter got up to speed much quicker. That easy going, I get there when I get there feeling was replaced with a brisker and authoritative response. The torque just builds and keeps building until you are way past the allowed speed limit. Good stuff.

I then replaced the stock Mercedes air filter with a high flow one from AFE, also bought from the sprinter store. The feel of that mod was not as noticeable but I sensed a bitty bit better throttle response and an increase in intake noise as well as blow off noise.

These two mods combined do yield a noticeable but subtle increase in power which feels very factory and is well worth the price that is 30% less than the Renntech product. Not having any other proven, conservative power upgrades available for my build date Sprinter I am very pleased.

Another benefit of having an overall lesser expenditure in engine management enhancements is that the difference between the Diesel Power product and Renntech paid for the air filter and rear shocks. J I love stretching mod bucks.
