New to this thing....

mardi 31 mars 2015

Hello Everybody, I'm new to forums, so please be patient. I have a 1971 23' Safari in decent shape and I'm beginning to do some cleanup of the exterior, as well as fixing the air conditioning. Also, I've never been able to figure out how the city water hookup works. On my Airstream I never seem to get any pressure when the city water is hooked up without running my pump. Any suggestions about this or about fixing or replacing my AC unit would be greatly appreciated. I'm about to embark on the whole cleaning and polishing experience that is recommended by Vintagetrailers.com, so would love any stories or shortcuts (if there are any), about that process. Thanks and I look forward to learning and sharing.

Franklin Chef Convection Microwave?

The 2015 Classic that I'm picking up in a couple of weeks has a Franklin Chef FR187 microwave in it. I say that based on the "component list" that came from Jackson Center; I'm 1,000+ miles removed from the trailer, so I can't verify the model and/or serial number.

In looking online for a manual, I find that Franklin Industries filed for chapter 11 in 2009 and apparently never came out of bankruptcy. Franklin Industries,LLC was the importer of Franklin Chef appliances at that time, although I could not see where they ever imported microwaves...mostly refrigerators.

There are a handful of online retailers currently selling Franklin Chef microwaves. Does anyone know anything about the manufacture of Franklin Chef microwaves and/or who might be importing them now? Or...do I own a 6+ year old "new" microwave with no warranty:mad:?

Manual for 1999 Bambi 19'

I recently purchased a 1999 19' Bambi which did not have an owner's manual. Was hoping someone would know where I can purchase one. Have done an exhaustive search online. I need basic instructions on how to use the camper, where things are, how they work, etc. Thanks

New vintage Airstream owner - Black Tank questions

Hi Guys!

I'm the happy new owner of a 1970 Airstream Overlander and like with all new things, I've got questions! But I'll start off with just one. I'm not sure that the black tank has been emptied in quite some time...I only surmise this is the case, because there is water coming up from the shower drain. Not a lot of water, but it's there and every now and then I see a larvae crawling around. Anyways, sorry if I've grossed anyone out already, but I'm wondering what my options are! Oh and one important detail - I am renovating the trailer on some countryside property that I own, but that means two things - one, I don't have an electrical hookup yet, and two, no plumbing hookup.

Thanks for any and all suggestions!!

Using Aircraft Paint Remover without water??

Hello! I'm beginning the process of stripping my AS and I'm in a neighborhood without drains on the street. Not only that, but my house has no exterior water source. I've bought a gallon of Aircraft Paint Remover from PepBoys and the directions say to "flush with solvent or water." Can I use mineral-spirits soaked rags or do I need to just suck it up and park her in a car wash for a day? Thanks!

Value: Argosy 1976 24'

Hey!

I'm new here, very nice place for a newbie!

I'm looking for my first AS to buy and renovate. I wanna buy something cheap and build it as I want it over the next few years...

What do you think of an Argosy 1976 24' for 10,000$US. Seems in decent conditions but I havent inspected it yet, and honestly, I expect to put a lot of money on it anyway to make it like brand new! ;-)

How much would you put on that.

Thanks in advance for you advice and tips, if any, for a first buyer!

Ecoboost Owners - extend the warrantee?

Ecoboost Owners - your opinion is desired. My 2013 F150 Ecoboost just rolled to 35,000 miles. The vehicle's been fantastic to date both as casual driving and towing of my Airstream. I'd like to see feedback from you if extending the Ford warrantee to 125,000 miles is in your opinion a valid choice. I'm interested especially in hearing what issues you've run into, if any.

I'm not really looking for third party links to rumor sites, or how other vehicles have handled. Interested to know from the ecoboost towing community if you'd spend the monies on the extended warrantee or not?

How about alternatives to Ford, if any?

septic connection

I was recently on the vintage trailer supply website, trying to figure out what connectors i need for my 62 airstream overlander 26' trailer. Turns out i need a bunch of parts to get things to fit from vintage to modern septic conneters. Before I get started i need to take a section of the belly pan panels off so i can see what needs to be done. How do i take apart the rivets and not damage them so I can reuse them when it comes time to put them back into place. What have I got myself into just need some much needed advice thanks.

1952 Royal Spartanette

Recently acquired a Spartanette to restore (with a few modernizations here and there) for full-time living. I thought I would start a thread to log our journey.

For 2 years my boyfriend and I saved money so we could purchase a tiny home in the form of a motor coach bus. We downsized our belongings, moved out of our rental house for the past eight years, and moved in with a friend.

Last August we pulled the trigger on a 1983 MCI bus to turn into our tiny home. We loving called her Old Rusty. After driving her home from Dayton, OH we discovered that Old Rusty lived up to her name, the entire frame of the old girl was completely rusted out. We were forced to turn around and sell her. We learned a lot from that experience.

My step-mom suggested we start looking into AS. I joined this forum and started learning as much as I could. I was still super skittish about actually purchasing anything because of the financial hit we had taken with the bus.

Randomly, my boyfriend ended up finding a nice woman on the AS forums looking to give her Spartanette away for free. It sounded too good to be true. But, we took a leap of faith and he flew out to CO to check it out. We used our AAA RV tow to have it taken to a mechanic near by who specialized in restoring vintage trailers. (what are the odds that their would be one so close?!) We had to wait a few weeks to hear back from the mechanic, he had to wait for the snow to melt to check out the wheels, axles, and frame. He finally called us back and gave us the good news that the only thing our Spartanette needed to be road ready was new tires. We gave him the green light and then worked on hiring a driver to tow it across the country to us back in NC.

The trailer finally arrived and I noticed that the driver had jack knifed his truck into the trailer not once, but twice. I called him out on it and he gave us $200 for replacement of the panel and rivets. It's minor damage, but I was mad he didn't mention it.

We spent 2 days cleaning 30 years of packrat poop out of the trailer and have now started taking down the interior panels so we can rewire and re-insulate.

All I have to say is, why didn't I go this route first?! I'm in love!

Here is a link to our photo album that I will be updating as we go along.

And here is a hastily made video tour I made for my family just as we started removing some of the paneling

How many hours to replace water heater..

Does anyone know how many hours it would 'book' to replace the water heater in my '99 Excella? It be leaking...and corroded. Still works on gas, but time to replace is too near. The connections are all good, so I'm guessing pin holes somewhere.

Thanks for the info!

...just handsome, not handy.

flooring repairs too!

I have ripped up rotted subfloor in the front half (and now bathroom) of my 77 overlander. Pardon the rookie question, but how critical is it that the flooring is up in the channel along the bottom of the wall? I didn't cut my front piece perfectly and it isn't up under there that good. Also I had to cut the original bolts that were used to hold the subfloor to the frame and I planned to just use self tapping screws to reattach the new subfloor to the frame? Is that ok to do that?

Now I'm beginning to regret this purchase!

77 overlander bought from FL, towed to WV. I have been pulling out rotted floor (that was covered by bamboo hardwoods)... I discovered today that my frame rail nearest the tub is literally rotted and crumbling to the touch. Should I drop my pan and the grey water/black water tanks? The metal sections where the bumper is bolted to is also severely rotted. Can this be "sistered" with another piece welded to the good metal and extended the same length as it should be?

Should I just gut the whole bathroom, drop the tanks and hope I can find someone to weld new frame pieces? It looks bad and I am sick over this... any advice? Thanks.

2002 Airstream Classic 28 - Texas

Title: 2002 Airstream Classic 28 - Texas

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

This very nice 2002 28’ Airstream Classic is in great condition. Does have some light hail damage on the front. The interior and exterior of the trailer looks immaculate with no smokers or pets. This model has the twin beds in the rear and comes with a Hensley hitch. The tires have been replaced with LT225/75R 16EI BFG commercial T/A with new aluminum wheels and stainless steel capped lug nuts.

The interior of the trailer is in like new condition and comes with an LCD TV. The 2 door refrigerator and the water heater are both propane and electric, 2 Fantastic fans (one has a rain sensor). The radio is AM/FM CD with a XM radio docking station.

The exterior is in great shape with spare tire and bracket, 2 solar panels, 16 ft Zip Dee Awning. The trailer is ready for camping. Let me know if you have any questions.

How hard to redo aluminum interior end caps?

I am new here. Also new to Airstreams. We have a 1968 Safari International that we are in the process of renovating. The majority of the walls are a bit of a no brainer for me. My question being one that probably pops up frequently, are replacement end caps. I would like to do them all in Aluminum. I also need to know what size and type of aluminum to use.

Would this process work for a 1968?

http://ift.tt/1xwCkan

Also wondering what type of plywood to use for the floor. I know that I shouldn't use PT (I know this from Aluminum boats I have done), but is there any thickness and grade that works better?

I also read somewhere that there is a guy named Colin Hyde that may possibly make new aluminum for the end caps pre trimmed and drilled, but there are about 10 Colin H's in the directory. Thanks everyone for any help. I am sure I will be coming to everyone much more frequently once we get more into this.

Thanks everyone!

Trying to replace toilet

Newbie Introduction

Hi, We are Airstream Newbies and loving it.

It took 2 years of wishing, hoping, wanting, and dreaming before we made the decision to become Airstream owners. After many hours of hunting and pecking on the computer we decided on a 2015 25 foot Flying Cloud with rear twin beds. It is pulled from place to place by a 2014 Ram 1500 4wd with 4 corner air suspension. We have had it a month and have been out Airstreaming three times. Pulled it to the Oregon Coast twice and over a mountain pass to Bend, Oregon during a snowstorm once. Truck and trailer handle great. We did make one modification. I removed the dinette table and short bench and replaced it with a comfy Lay-z-boy recliner. This works much better for us. The Airstream has been christened with the name of Claire and the little doggie white fur puff is Carl. We are excited to be a member of the Airstream Family and looking forward to many exciting adventures with Claire.

Absolutely great trailer in excellent condition! This is the front Bedroom OCEAN BREEZE model. The front BR is often preferred because your living area is at the rear where the view usually is when backed into most campsites (especially waterfront!). This Ocean Breeze has the 2 twin bed setup and we wanted a larger non-separated sleeping area so we simply added removable wood bed slats between the 2 twins and had 3 custom high end super comfortable memory foam mattresses built. The photo you see here shows the end product, a HUGE sleeping area which can be returned to 2 twins in about 10 minutes if you so desire. We also added a 2nd TV with built in DVD player in the bedroom. We are the 2nd owner of this trailer and are selling because our future work schedule prevents us from using it for the next year or two. All maintenance is up to date and has been performed at Colonial Airstream which is located close to where we live. New tires in 2012, entire roof and rear window resealed in 2013, all 4 electric brakes replaced in 2014 and all wheel bearings greased in 2014. I will do my best to answer any and all questions promptly.

Awning width on 1966, 28' ambassador

Our original Carefree awning has a width of approx. 4-1/2' when extended. Was this the stock width for this era/vintage ? I don't know if the P.O. cut the width back. Looking at the extension bars, I would think that another 18" to 2' could be added ? We are currently looking into replacing the vinyl as it is shot ! Mechanics work fine on the unit but we sure could use a little more width.

Thanks,

Danny

Interior End cap options for 68 GT (First Thread!)

The backstory is I found a 1968 Globetrotter that nobody had been inside in ten years. I don't camp but I thought it sad that such a beautiful piece of Americana never got used. So I bought it for our new office. An office within the office building! Now it will get used daily by a bunch of twenty somethings who already think its totally cool.

I've had the outside buffed to a mirror shine. Now its time to go inside. I gave all the fixtures to a guy who restores Airstreams so I was happy they got reused.

I'm going to put reclaimed wood floors in and nice shiny .032 aluminum in the "easy parts" in the middle. The end caps are the question mark.

I've searched these forums for a specific thread on end caps as well as Yahooing it.

I'm seeing three options: future polish the original, aluminum or wood.

Any other cool ideas out there?

Thanks in advance!

Inverter runs continuously????

Got my AS home today, noticed my inverter was not on??? Realized I had crossed a wire in the battery compartment. Once that was fixed the inverter fired right up. It seems to be "running" continuously. Essentially I can hear the cooling fan running/humming. Is it suppose to make a continuous noise? I have all the cushions etc out of the trailer. So everything is accentuated. Is this normal??

HD 1206 Brake Drum - Dexter?

I have a call into Dexter, but I thought I would try on here too. My brake drum is marked HD 1206. Is that a Dexter #? It has an "R" inside an oval on the drum too. Perhaps on Al Ko (their website isn't too good). I am thinking about switching to self adjusters at some point and I am trying to zero in on the parts.

When I install new backing plates, is it a good idea to install new drums/hubs? Mine do have some magnet scoring. Note, I also posted on here today about magnet/bearing wear.

Southwest USA: "Valley Fever" cough

We had a little fun with the "chiggers" on an earlier thread, which is something we can have some control over prevention and the eventual cure.

Valley Fever... this is real.

We spent nearly five weeks in Tucson, Quartzite, Arizona and Las Vegas, Boulder City, Nevada this January to February. At Lake Mead, NV just outside Boulder City is a great campground at $5 a day for Senior National Park card holders. Not full hookup, but water and restrooms were available at the campground.

There was a period of several days of drizzle. The third day and afterward the dead appearing desert gravels began to turn green. Grass had germinated and began to poke out where it appeared lifeless. Well, so did some invisible to me, at least, FUNGUS. The "cocci fungus"

At first it appeared I had caught a upper respiratory infection. You feel a bit off and then you begin to cough, your lungs get congested. After four days you try to speak and you cough. If you have not had this before, as I never experienced it, you expect a cold virus and wait it out. My wife never showed a sign of contracting the "virus". This "cold" never left my chest to my sinuses.

The "cough, fever, sweat" come in regular daily cycles... AFTER the major episode of coughing thick mucus, when lucky. Google "Valley Fever Southwest" for symptoms. The fever feels like your head had a mild sunburn, my temperature was 100.4 degrees.

I recalled a former neighbor who moved to Tucson, Arizona for the winter and Colorado in the summer.. He said he had this cold that just would not go away on one return home to Colorado. The local Denver, Colorado doctors could not figure it out. My neighbor's wife did... Valley Fever. I diagnosed myself and am going into to see the doctor tomorrow, AM. This stuff does not seem to give up.

IF you are not a resident of the Southwest USA and visited, picked up a "cold and persistent cough"... check your symptoms against those from your Google search. I have not had the flu nor a cold for thirty years. This is my first experience with Valley Fever and I am at a chronic 85% to 90% normal. The shortness of breath I attributed to coming from 1500 feet elevation back to 6500 feet, but thought it strange this happened so easily... but it is probably my irritated lungs.

Are there other regional illnesses that we Airstreamers should be aware? This Valley Fever is one that is easily confused with a virus. Probably from my walking the dogs every morning in the gravels and bare ground, as well as prodding around looking for shiny stones to take home. This stuff... at least for me, will be taken care of immediately if I get the first "cold symptoms" again.

Window Mod

The folks over at Vintage Trailer Supply referred me to this forum, I’m looking for a some pointers doing a modification to a 68’ Tradewind. I’m a metalworker out in California, a client of mine has an ice cream company, they would

like to make their trailer into a mobile shop.

What I need to do is cut out the two windows on the passenger side and make a new large window. My plan is

to something like this:

- Cut out windows

- Create frame in 6061 AL

- Make window frame in 6061 T bar or angle, rivet on MS20470 sheet with solid buck rivets

- Hinge with gas springs

- Gasket or seal where necessary, add waterproofing

- install 2 x paddle latches

- after I’m done the whole thing will get polished by someone else

Does this seem like a logical way to do this? Thanks so much for your time!

Best!

Helping a stranger

I recently met an older gentleman with a triple axle 34. I let him know about a defect in the sidewall of one of his existing 15" tires. He is of course immediately interested in new tires, but not going 16, and not keeping with ST tires.

Has anyone used the Mich MS2 Tire on a tri axle? A quick read shows only a 1900 pound rating!

An equivalent e load range st tire carries nearly double the load. I have intentionally avoided the tire threads, now I need some advice!

Replacing Window Gasket

The rear window channel in my 27' front bedroom is collecting water when ever it rains. Once the channel fills the water seeps through the window latch assembly and runs down the wall and under the linoleum. I believe the problem is a bad gasket in one of the corners. I noticed the gasket is cut at a 45 degree angle and in all the corners but the problem corner the gasket pieces are "glued" together where they have been cut. I have not been able to get an answer about what to use to fasten the gasket pieces to each other. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In addition, any suggestions about what the correct window latch tension is would also be greatly appreciated.

If not an airstream...

Hello. We are about 80% committed to buying a Sport 22FB. We just spent two months in the SOCAL desert and loved it. In a Rockwood A122 aframe popup. A bit cramped. We are interested in a smaller, lighter TT in the 20 foot range that we can tow with a Ford Explorer. Mostly Boondocking. The Sport 22 seems to fit our needs. So, two questions for the forum. Does this seem like a good fit for us? Also, if not an Airstream, what high quality fiberglass TT would you suggest? I'm 6'2" so I need a bed and ceiling that works. Thanks.

Mobius n' Automation

Hiiii all.. I'm creating this sound art piece type performance in which I'm going to be improv / free form singing but to a "backing track" of automation within Logic. Looping/mobius are to be the cornerstone of this performance, as i want my vocals constantly being captured and looped while im singing and pitch shifted and otherwise FX'd to create bass lines and other rhythmic sounds as well as huge swarms of chaos... all via automation, w/o any form of live midi control. sounds fun :p

i just embarked upon this pretty (read: definitely) colossal task of setting up all the automation.. - enter my first hang up/question (there'll prob be lots more to come over the next month.. ill put yr names in the credits if u help me :)

when trying to automate the Record function, it is set up as an On/Off style command, meaning if i automate it as "On" it thinks i am holding the Record button down. well, if you try clicking and holding the Record button in mobius you'll notice it cuts itself back off within half a second of it being held down, and records nothing. this means each time i want to start or stop Record, i have to automate an "On" point followed by an "Off", and the Off has to occur within that half second frame. well, at least i figured this much out and can make it record! ..so this is really a matter of convenience. at any rate i am wondering if anybody can advise me as to how i could change the way Record is automated so i won't have to pair both On and Off automation points each time i wish it to start, or to stop?

and any other general advice regarding how to approach this set i am trying to create would be much appreciated :p

thanks

My wife and I just got our first argosy! It's a '73 argosy 26 rear bath center twin. Tonight we were going through and cleaning it out and found this black tune coming from the bathroom area under the door side under the twin bed frame. It seems to be unraveling but would love some assistance before I tear the whole tub up. Thanks!

We are selling our 1965 Airstream Overlander. We bought this Airstream about 3 years ago, and have since made many improvements. We have taken several trips in this Airstream with our two kids and two dogs, and it has workout well for us. We are selling to buy a newer model.

We have completely redone the floors and sub-floors; adding insulation. It now has a brand new A/C unit. New convection microwave oven and new refrigerator. New mattress on the bed, and a new jack-knife sofa. The electrical panel is new, both ac and dc. New toilet. New pex plumbing through-out. We have added PVC drains.

All gas has been removed, and the gas stove doesn't work. We do have a convection cook-top that we would give with the RV.

The shower and the back sink faucets needs new seals. The D/C portion of the electrical needs to be hooked up to the panel, we just never got around to doing this.

The Airstream comes with leveling stands. This Airstream is great for a camping family.

Jestco Buffer Leaving Hazy Streaks

I have polished my 66 Trade Wind Alcad skins with the "Jestco system" using an 8" diameter by 1" wide unsewn cotton buffing wheels and the gray and pink bars. I was looking for a faster polish as compounding seems to take a lot of time. My old trailer was oxidized and significantly pitted in the front as you can imagine. I did not wet sand it.

I rotated the buffing wheel at about 2800 rpm on my angle polisher. I worked in about 12" widths progressing from the bottom of the trailer to the top. I was traversing at a slow rate so the buffer could do its thing, like maybe an inch a second.

I first found streaks where I thought I had missed a little stripe with the gray bar and was hopeful the pink bar pass would clean them up. But it did not. Then I compounded with Airbrite medium thinking that would clean up the streaks, but it did not. And Cyclo with F7 or S does not get rid of the streaks. I would think almost any kind of aluminum surface would polish. Even my brushed finish 86 polished up pretty good.

The S polish sticks in the streaks to the point of being difficult to remove. It's like the streaks are a rougher surface although they don't feel that way. They are hazy streaks against the normal mirror like surfaces.

I wonder if I ground down into the aluminum skin too far by putting too much pressure on the buffer, or traversing to slowly? Have any of you experienced polishers using the "Jestco" buffer method had similar situation?

Hi. i decided to make the move from hardware looping to software after many years and don't know why i didn't sooner.

had some teething troubles (synch to FCB1010 etc.) but getting there.

What i want to do eventually is to use Mobius as a plug-in for recording in Live - effectively to be able to record in the way i would perform live - lots of audio loops with live playing on top. maybe i'll get there eventually.

I've used Boss RC-2, RC-50, Pigtronix, JamMan etc. over the years but prefer the software on first impressions.

So... what do it do with it?

I'm a guitarist and record under the name Yellow6, and have done since about 1997. released some stuff, played some gigs and still wanting to do more.

looking forward to getting more into using Mobius...

Newbie questions

Hi. i'm getting to grips with, and loving, Mobius - so much better than all those hardware loopers i've had over the years.

But... a couple of things i'm having trouble with i'd really appreciate help with.

First is a Stop command for a loop or track. This is just in case i mess up what i'm playing and don't want the loop to start - should i just use reset? This doesn't seem to reset a loop that is in record mode.

Second is restarting in synch with the other loops. If i have 4 loops of different lengths, but all synched to track 1 (i'm keeping it simple with 1 loop per track at present), if i pause tracks 2, 3 or 4, is there a simple control to get them to restart in synch with loop1 next cycle?

thanks in advance for any help

Vinyl walls on 86 Sovereign

Hi - I have a 2 part question about 'off gassing' since I want to start painting my vinyl walls.

Part 1: I noticed that all surface areas that are exposed 24/7 (ceiling, walls) are very, very sticky (think post-it notes) - even when cleaned by a multitude of products repeatedly - however, the surfaces that are behind closed doors (in the closets, and cupboards) are just fine. SO if it's off gassing, wouldn't it happen regardless of where the vinyl is?

Part 2: since I can't seem to eliminate the stickiness even with extensive cleaning - do I DARE to paint? I've read a lot of suggestions and it seems that Zinsser Bulls eye 1-2-3 is the way to go for a primer - and even 2 coats - then a quality latex to finish (In CA, we cannot buy enamel paint other than a primer).

Okay, it's a 3 part question: I live in Redding, which sees 103-110 degree days for 2-3 months of the summer. How will this effect the staying power of the paint?

ANY suggestions will be appreciated.

TV Weight Distribution

I have just returned from a short trip and before getting home got my weights from a CAT scale. I have a 19ft Bambi FC (all tanks empty) pulled by a 2011 F150 ecoboost. I have weight distribution and sway control. Here is the results of the weighing

Front Axle 3320 lbs

Rear Axle 3800 lbs

Trailer 3620 lbs

My question is this, should I attempt to transfer more weight to my front axle of the TV by adjusting my weight distribution set up. Any recommendations would be helpful.

Installing inverter and battery backup inside

Hello,

I'm weighing ( literally) my options of putting in battery backup sealed AGM and Kyocera inverter inside my airstream. It would be in the rear under the bed ( remodeled 75 land yacht- the bedroom is in the rear)...I have a good 2'clearance and a ton of dead space.

The weight would be about 150 lb extra with batts and inverter.

Is this too much?

My alternative is to build a portable battery box and inverter to plug the main power into.

2013 23D mattress available

Just thought I would throw it out there. Just ordered a new foam mattress for our 23D and the original one is in mint as new cond, We have stayed in the trailer maybe 10 -12 nights and rather than toss it or storing it I thought I would give it to someone that can use it or needs to replace a worn out older one. It is 48 x 76 with a 10" radius on the end and the 22: radius in the corner against the trailer...no stains always had an additional cover as well as sheets over it. Let me know...I live between Seattle and Tacoma and work in Bellevue WA. so will take it with me there if it works better...new mattress will be here 3/31 so after that it will be available...will keep it till then in case they messed up the cut on the new one. Newbies: our instant hot water heater just stopped working!

Hi there,

We are on our first ever trip in our 95 Excella. Most things have gone fine. We have a precision temp 500 and have loved it for the past two days.

This morning, doing dishes...ran for about 10 mins, and all of a sudden stopped working.

We changed the LP tank at 5am last night (don't ask...), but again....we ran the hot momentarily at that time to be sure it was still working, and then used the hot for about 10 mins this morning, 3 hours later, so not sure changing the LP is related.

Here is what seems right:

The green light is flashing on the heater when powered on.

The wheel is turning on the water valve as it is supposed to be, when the water is on.

We do NOT see the unit igniting or firing up. Yellow ignitor wire seems fine.

Any thoughts? Very weird to me that it was working fine, and all of a sudden won't fire back up......

Thoughts?

parting with my 1965 Silver Streak Sabre

Hello knowledgable vintage trailer fans. I bought an 18 ft. 1965 Silver Streak Sabre for $2,500. in 2009 with the intention of fixing it up. I cut out part of the floor that was soft and my husband cut out a plywood patch. We removed the gaucho bed and the dinette area and that's as far as we got. We have since moved from Ohio to Vermont and the trailer is still in Ohio. We are hesitant to pull it out here with our 2013 Subaru Outback and so I have reluctantly decided to part with it. I'm not sure what a fair price for it is. It has the original wood cabinets, lighting fixtures (gas and electric), white sink, white stove with a red Bakelite knob, and white countertop. The back end is half closet and half small bathroom with a toilet and shower. It has had electrical wiring work done but needs a water tank and plumbing to the sink. It has so much potential but I think it is beyond me. The exterior is very good and it has the exterior trunk, although the lid came off the hinges. The step up into the trailer needs to be fixed. I'm trying to post 15 photos but my IPAD seems to only let me post one at a time... I would like to get some ideas about a fair price to ask for it. Thanks

Too much tongue weight

samedi 28 mars 2015

I have a 2014 Mercedes GL350. The owner's manual states that maximum tongue weight is 600# and I struggle mightily to stay within that limit. I could easily get to 900 or 1000# tongue weight if I just packed stuff in the most convenient places. At the very least, I know that excessive tongue weight can cause the trailer to be a handful, especially in crosswinds or when passing/being passed by trucks. And if there is enough tongue weight, it can cause the front end of the TV to be light which can affect handling and stability.

Nothing is stated in the manual about that limit increasing with use of a weight distributing hitch. In fact, the manual fails to mention use of a weight distributing hitch at all. I asked my dealer about it and the service guy said that I shouldn't use a weight distributing hitch on my GL because of the way the factory hitch is attached to the unibody. I don't know if that's true or not.

The service guy also said that use of a WD hitch will increase the distance between the ball and the end of the receiver so much that it will be outside of factory specs. I know there is, indeed, a factory spec on the distance between the end of the receiver and the ball. All WD hitches I've seen would exceed that distance.

Is there anything I can do so that exceeding the factory specs on tongue weight (perhaps by a lot) won't adversely affect towing or my TV? Thanks for any advice.

BTW, I searched this forum and found discussion about tongue weight but nothing that addressed my situation. If I missed it, I apologize in advance.

Where to start? 20A breaker pops after ~5sec plugged in

So I'm working on the '72 Ambassador I picked up recently, decide to test out the electrical system before I move on to water and gas systems. I run a cord out to it, plug it in, and after about five seconds I can hear the 20A breaker pop.

Now, the *other* 20A breaker for the AC doesn't have any issues (and the AC works great, which was a big relief), but I'm not quite sure where to start for the main breaker. I haven't messed with the fuses on the Univolt, no idea how old those may be, but they all look to be in decent shape. I don't have a battery installed, just trying to run it off the land-line til I get everything checked out.

There doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary, and I've even unplugged / turned off the fridge to pull that out of the system. The wiring to / from the breaker and at the univolt look to be in good shape, no frays or anything like that.

Any ideas on where to start?

Does anyone have a recommendation for an axle change shop in Arizona?

It's getting too hot, and my driveway is on too much of an incline.

That's my excuse and I'm stickin' to it. :brows:

Refrigerator

Newbie here needs help. We just bought our first AS a 2012 25' FC twin FB. Getting ready for our first trip and tried to start the refrigerator to make sure it was working. I'm plugged into shore power and gas bottles are full and on. When I push the start button I get a number (88) and then a code "EO" then a blank screen. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

Second awning?

We are waiting for delivery of our first AS (25FB Twin Flying Cloud)- so excited! Wondering if we should order a second awning for the "back side" of the AS. What are the advantages of having it? Worth the investment? Comments please. Thanks.

- Original stove

- fresh water tank

- Suburban heater

- Hot water heater tank

- Water pump? I think that is what this is.

- drawers and frame from front couch area. Wood is still in good condition

- various light fixtures

- original toilet and black water tank with valve body still attached to bottom of it.

- aluminum propane tanks - rusty but still solid

- kitchen sink with original stoppers

None of these are guaranteed to work and none have been restored.

I have pictures of all this stuff.

1969 Airstream Sovereign 31 - California

Title: 1969 Airstream Sovereign 31 - California

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

This 1969 Airstream International Sovereign is in terrific condition! Airstream has always been the Cadillac of travel trailers and this Airstream proves that quality is long lasting. It is fully road-worthy with dual axle tires which have plenty of treat and they are not cracked. This Airstream is suitable for travel or full-time occupancy. The LP tanks are the quality, all aluminum tanks. No water leaks anywhere. No broken windows and all windows have screens. The CA registration is up to date (approx. $90 annually). I have a serious heart condition causing me to downsize and this Airstream has been my home for the past three years. The carport that appears in the photos has been removed. The bamboo “skirting” is not attached to the Airstream and it can be removed in 15 minutes. The exterior was polished 3 years ago. I am selling because I have purchased a manufactured home that is somewhat larger.

My name is Ken. Please contact me with any questions that you may have. This is a quality, solid Airstream and it is priced to sell quickly at $14,950.

Improvements/Changes:

• New stainless steel refrigerator

• New Italian stainless steel cook top

• New Bosch Convection/microwave oven

• All LED lighting (except front reading lights)

• New ceiling light fixtures

• New “smoky mineral” cork flooring

• New LP water heater

• Includes new AC compressor and valves to convert the unit to a heat pump ( AC works and blows 58 degree air)

• Includes new AC fan motor and fan blade assembly

• New laminate kitchen counter top

• New laminate for dining table and side bar

• Two new “Fantastic Fans” with rain sensors (front and back)

• New Porcelain toilet

• New tinted Rock guard for front windows

• The water storage tank has been removed resulting in a larger living area. Most travelers go to parks with full hook-ups so this would not be an issue.

• The small furnace was not functional. I removed it and I use a small electric heater on the rare occasions that I need heat. As noted above, you can easily convert the AC unit to a heat pump. My friend converted his and he has posted full instructions airforums.com

I am replacing the commode and the refrigerator in my 77 Overlander and want to get rid of the old ones for cheap! I am not really interested in shipping or dealing with any of the hassle of doing so... I will be willing to drive a short distance (100 miles or so) if you pay for fuel cost.

They both work just fine I am just gutting everything and doing it from scratch! Thanks!

Batteries

I'm sure this has been answered before, but here goes anyway. The batteries in the moho could stand replacement (all of them). Any suggestions for best bang for the buck? Don't really do too much boondocking, and it gets parked in a heated air conditioned barn with 50A hookup, but if I had to leave it sit overnight relying on the batteries I'd like to know the 12V system would work....Thanks!

I should add that it travels 3 miles down a gravel road each time it goes out and returns so vibration is ultimately an issue,,,,

Heads Up -- F150 TT Pkg -- Missing Fuses for Trailer Power

I'm a very new Airstream owner, with an also-new 2014 F150 with the 6.2L and the trailer towing pkg. The Mrs. and I made the 30 mile drive to the trailer storage lot to hitch up and practice backing up - about 2 weeks after picking up our 2015 Airstream International Serenity 27. To our surprise, no power when we plugged in the 7 pin connector from the trailer to the truck. Batteries were down, no power from the truck to the trailer, particularly the power jack on the trailer, tho the running lights all worked.

A few intense phone calls with my son-in-law, who's owned a 27 for several years, and a friend of his who tows something different with an F150. His friend noted that his F150 with the TT package came with several of the TT package fuses not installed, but in the glove box. Sure enough, we checked the schematic in the F150 owners manual, and both fuses for truck-to-trailer battery charging, one a 30 amp cartridge fuse and the other a relay, were missing, and not in the glove box either. lLuckily, they were clearly labeled on the schematic. A trip to the nearby Ford dealer whose parts shop was open all day Saturday, and we had our fuses, all the power back up, and everything working.

After the several-hour diagnosis and parts runs, we packed it in for the day. The Airstream was fine. Ford let us down. Heads up new F150 owner/trailer towers. Check those fuses! My son-in-law's quick thinking saved us a 50-mile trip to the Airstream dealer, where they would have told me their trailer was fine, followed by another trip to the Ford dealer to MAYBE discover that 2 fuses were missing. Last note -- the $30 relay fuse didn't solve the problem. The $2.00 cartridge fuse did. Lesson learned.

what is the right price

Just looked at a 1975 31' excella the exterior shell is in perfect condition less one small dent at the floor line. Everything is original, I can't tell about the subfloor, it has been sitting for the last 5 years and has seen limited road time over it's lifetime, the water hasn't been on for 5 years, the interior is very tired but all there, the cushions are torn and there is some mold from lack of ventilation. The owner has used it for overflow sleeping only, the Ac probably doesn't work and the refrig is shot. It's a rear bathroom unit. He's looking for $10,000, a couple of dealers tell him they can get him that and maybe more.

Everything I read and see tells me it's $2000 to $4000. I'm looking for a total gut and rebuild, so this would be a great one to play with. I don't what to overpay but I want to be fair. What is the right number. The fact that it's local is a big plus and worth something.

Fuses, what fuses?

[/IMG]My 85 sovereign has a fuse panel but instead of fuses I've got these little relay looking things? What are these and how do they work?

OK ready for a bike rack!

We are full-timers and love our bikes. What is the best to mount above the propane tanks? I am ready!

where does condensate go?

I need to replace my a/c. I am wondering where condensation goes on most roof air conditioners. I hear about drip cups a lot. Do these collect the water and let evaporation take it off or are they connected to a line that channels it away? Is evaporation an effective system. Does an aftermarket a/c usually have a port for a drip line?

We are selling faithful traveling friend that has taken us around the country. 25' Safari, single owner, with rear bedroom. It is in good condition and pulls without difficulty. Comfortable. A great way to see the country. Inside shows normal wear and no significant structural issues. There is an issue with the stove/range(just the oven), but we expect to replace this. Similarly, the battery box is corroded, and we expect to replace this as well--appointment made at the factory on June 2 to do this, as well as service the roof, etc. Our reason for selling--we have 10-15 years of air streaming left, and are considering buying our second new airstream, this time with the wrap around windows. $25,000 after we get things fixed. $20,000 now as is. Call me, and I will tell you everything about it. I might consider driving it to show, depending on location (less than 500 miles or a location that we may wish to visit anyway!) ( It might be at Alumapalooza)

FLATBEDDING an INTERSTATE

With all the discussion about towing, flatbedding and dollies for rear wheels, I strongly suggest again putting heavy steel wheels below your tow hitch so there is something for your rear end to ride on instead of your bumper or anything else that hangs low back there. Certainly will prevent EXPENSIVE damage and also keep you from worrying when you hear that loud scraping noise in and out of driveways. VERY CHEAP INSURANCE.

Near total redo cost?

I am new and looking at various models and years. I like the modern look of the new AS. If I got a model that is 10 years old, how much would that roughly be to update everything except appliances. Is there an average square foot price, like in construction that I an ball park off? I am looking for a 30ft AS.

2013 23D corner bed mattress

New to me 2001 Bambi 19ft

Hello my name is Bernie Zelinski and live in San Diego and just purchased a 2001 19ft Bambi. I pick her up next week. The prior owner spent about 2 hours with me yesterday and we went over the trailer from top to bottom and what an nice rig. And if the person I bought it from is any indication of how nice, friendly and helpful the AS community is I think this is going to be a great experience.

I just turned 60 last week and am planning on taking some short trips to get to know the trailer and figure out how to load and outfit her. My goal is in two years (read SS starts) I am going to put my household goods in storage, rent out my house and take off on a Nation Wide trip to include Canada and Alaska. Be gone for at least a year or...?

I also am looking for a truck to pull her with and thinking of a used F250 or Ram 2500 diesel 4x4. Over kill perhaps for this trailer but want to use the truck for more storage and do not want to be under-powered. I am open to suggestions on the which truck I need if you would like to comment.

This website is FULL of information and plan on reading a lot and hope to see some of you guys on the road.

Take care Bernie

Pickup Bed Cover

We just took delivery of a 2015 GMC Denali Diesel crew cab. We ordered if from GM and we picked it up yesterday. It has lots of bells and whistles except one - a cover for the truck bed. I have never owned a truck so this is new to me. I'm not sure what to do as far as covering the truck bed, I don't think that I want a topper, but I am open to hearing what others have to say. I think that I either want a tonto cover (think that's what it is called) or a flat hard shell cover that just covers the truck bed and tilts upwards from the back. I would like to know what others think? Being water tight (water proof) so that I can store things and have them safe from rain is important. Where do you purchase these covers? The dealer or some after market place? What are the best brands etc. Our truck is black so I want whatever cover we get to match the truck. Also can you recommend a good box - one of those silver or black tool boxes that go in the back? I've seen them at Lowe's and Home Depot but someone said that the cheap ones don't last. Thanks for any words of wisdom and advice that you can pass along. :bb:
