Fort Bragg to Bodega bay?

samedi 28 février 2015

Hey there. We're headed south down the west coast toward an eventual switch to go east on I-10. Good friends of ours suggested that we should be sure to tour from Fort Bragg to Bodega bay on our way south. Those of you with experience in this area - any thoughts on the wisdom of towing our Airstream trailer along that stretch of Route 1? Any good places to camp along the way?

If we do this, what's the best way around San Francisco and Silicon Valley that dodges the worst traffic messes?

Thanks so much.

Our t@b trailer was just totaled, and our small family is looking to replace it with a small airstream. I would prefer to get something that is in good condition, that we could use this spring/summer. I would consider finishing a restoration as long as it can be towed safely. We have a few trips planned this spring so please let me know if anyone can helps us out.

Thanks

question re. towing / 2004 Ford Explorer

Hi everyone, I just bought a 2004 25' International CCD that I will be picking up in a month, and on my learning curve here. I currently own a 2004 Ford Explorer V6. I presume a better tow vehicle is needed. Is this a suitable vehicle even for short term? Anyone with any experience with hauling and this vehicle?

Thanks,

Barry

Advice needed...

Greetings,

Hope all is well. I'm in need of advise from longer term streamers, especially those that spend a significant amount of time in there airstream.

In April, I will be starting a 2 year internship that will have me crisscrossing across America. Instead having to find and switching residence every 2 to 3 months, I was considering purchasing a used Airstream and living out of it for the next two years.

I have found a used 2006 26' but wanted to reach out to the community for you input.

My questions range from living comfort year round in an airstream to what I need to look out for when purchasing the airstream; Campsite vs trailer parks; insurance; warranty etc etc etc...

Any all and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

We are using the trailer this weekend. We have travel to all Californian's National and State parks. Tows like a dream lots of fun. Looking for a good owner to take care of it, and use it. I'm sad to part from it but I refuse to let it sit in storage. If you don't have a truck to tow it, I have been using a Land Rover LR3. It has been a perfect SUV. For a fare price I would sell it too. Jason

Black tank flush problem

When I hook up the water hose to clean out my black water tank, nothing happens! There is apparently an anti-back flow valve that is not opening. Has anyone else had that problem? Is it something I should be able to repair/replace? Oops! I should have mentioned I have 2011 Flying Cloud 30.

Power Inverter problem

In the rear bedroom of my 2005 Classic 30' trailer I have a wall mounted TV that connects to a power inverter in the closet adjacent to the bed. The TV stopped working and I traced the problem to the power inverter (the TV works when plugged into one of the standard trailer outlets). I replaced the inverter with a new one but the TV still won't work. Is there something else I need to do to get the inverter to function properly. I know absolutely nothing about electrical connections and I only found out about power inverters by using the internet and product information on the old inverter.

leaks and floor problems?

We currently own a 17' Casita which is all fiberglass. In 10 years we have never had a leak problem or flooring issue. In reading various items on the forum we see a lot about leaks and flooring problems on Airstreams. This has kept us from moving forward on a purchase. Can you give us some prospective on this problem.

If we are spending big bucks for an Airstream we do not want to pick up a problem that we have escaped with our Casita.

Queen bed to twins and back again?

There is a 34' advertised in the classifieds that was converted from a queen bed to twins. I sent a message to the seller, but so far haven't gotten an answer. How difficult would it be to convert such a coach back to a queen bed? What about a coach that started out with twins? Could it be converted to a queen without sacrificing walk-around space at the foot of the bed?

Such a novice here...

Kids are grown and soon my wife and I will hit the road in a new (or used) AS. With the help of all you lovely AS owning folks on this Forum, we will make the correct purchasing decisions! Thanks in advance for any and all input. I JUST bought a 2015 Nissan Frontier Pro 4x so thats my tow vehicle (love the truck, don't want to hear about trading up to a Ford half ton or one ton or diesel). I am a TOTAL novice with trailers other than my lightweight boat so first off, the new hitch label says 7,500 lbs max tow weight and 750lbs max tongue weight. Does this restrict my purchase to a particular size AS? Can anyone tell me why the single axle AS trailers are SO MUCH lighter than the next one up? i.e.: sport vs flying cloud. Big price difference too. Already got some GREAT advice by reading other newbie threads and we WILL visit the dealer and spend some time inside the various models to purchase the best size. Retirement is 2 years away but we plan to purchase sooner and do some weekend trips and have it on our property as extra space/guest room so the intelligent buying process starts now. Thanks.

Center bath door

I have a 1976 31' Sovereign Center bath. Originally there was a sliding door for the entry to the bath, where the shower, sink and toilet are. Small space and the door when closed made it even smaller. So I removed the door and I have never missed it. The hall way between the kitchen and rear bed room with the accordion doors closed provides the privacy needed and extends the usable space of the bath area.

A good while back I saw on the forum that someone had removed the rear wall between the toilet and the hall to even open the space even more. More elbow room while on the throne. This seems to be doable and could be done by working around the sewer vent that runs up the wall in the corner.

I would like to get some input on this project from anyone that has done this or other comments and thoughts from others.

Thanks

Please Help Me Find The Right Tanks

We are at the next phase of our traveling dream project. The water and holding tanks.

We were able to find New Old Stock for the freshwater tank and thankfully even with shipping the tank was under $300.

After several attempts to use the correct word or word combinations in the forum search and reading several great threads, I still can not find a direct replacement for the Main and Auxiliary tanks for our center bath '79 31ft Sovereign. I have seen where some have done custom tanks but in order to keep on budget (okay to keep from going over budget by thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars since the budget was shot after the first project), I need to try and find tanks that are more common and hopefully carried by local venders.

I have sent off correspondences to places like Inca and InLand. But the tanks will run 350 or more plus shipping. I also asked Airstream directly if there are current replacement tanks or cross-referenced to other tanks. They told me to contact Inland, Vintage and Silver Trailer Supply. They do carry several different tanks but nothing with the same part number or are not close enough as replacements (as "off the shelf" replacements).

Google search and I can find several blogs and threads for rear bath sovereigns.

We are replacing most of the interior but would like to keep, at least close to, the same areas for the kitchen, bath and toilet.

Has anyone used "off the shelf" waste tank replacements for their center bath? What model number or numbers work the best?

TRAILER NEWBIES... Firsts to Remember

My first trailer, a 23 foot Airstream, was my first experience towing, other than some UHaul trailers. Putting the tow vehicle's transmission into DRIVE, I departed the RV Dealer's lot... a hearty farewell.

A hearty farewell from the DEALER... for me it was an event to remember. Firsts in towing an actual trailer. After making a wrong turn from the RV Lot and ending up in an apartment complex parking lot, I learned to navigate some tight turns. Not by choice, but by accident. Mirrors were finally discovered as an important tool of towing. The passenger's mirror with the optics distorted was not much help, but I did navigate out of this mistake and off to the RV PARK where we had paid up for the rest of the year for storing the trailer when not using it.

(1) FIRST and actually the most important first. BACKING UP. You will discover that backing up requires some... practice and sweat equity. Lots of sweat. Little equity. Oh yeah. Those of you pulling a 34 foot Airstream can snicker a bit, but a longer trailer is tame compared to a 16 foot Bambi in reverse. But... in either case you will need someone to watch your "rear end".

(2) SECOND. After you have figured out the First Experience, you actually are ready for the THIRD first.

(3) THIRD. Loading your Trailer. The first trip will include many things that will not be used... ever. Eliminate those on the second trip. It seems everyone, including us, load up three weeks of food for a one week trip. I guarantee that you will stop at more than one restaurant while on this first trip. Weight is critical... so read up on the weight of water per gallon. Traveling dry, empty fresh water tank, can improve your gas mileage and you can pick up water pretty much anywhere. Carry a six gallon jug in your tow vehicle in the event you need water. It might be after the first year of FIRSTS, you will discover that some things are not necessary when you are going from A to B in eight hours. Yes... some of you want to tow all of the Bells and Whistles.... sure, go ahead. I don't. So I will skip Fourth through Sixth firsts...

(7) SEVENTH. Tools. Bring an electric screwdriver. A small socket set. A hammer. A phillips and straight edged screwdriver. As soon as the tires are rolling over the pavement... parts began to come loose and screws dropped during the building of your trailer appear from crevices and from under cabinets. Eventually you will settle into a smaller assortment, but be prepared.

(8) EIGHTH. When your gasoline gauge begins to drop below 50%, begin to think about topping the fuel tank. If the next town is 100 miles away... you do not want to be a hitch hiker, leaving your trailer. Or worse, dropping your trailer off on the side of the road to get to a gasoline station. Either way... there will a FIRST stupid thing, we all have done something we regret. Like... maybe not checking the AIR in your spare tire.

(9) NINTH. Take any advice with a "grain of salt". Whatever that means, just consider the What, IFs and Buts of being away from home and the tons of supplies and tools left in the garage.

The most important First is the FIRST. Backing up your trailer. Please, lets hear more Newbie Firsts. Newbies will not usually ASK, as they want everyone to think that they are proficient towing. Guys are the worst. Why entertain the experienced at an RV Park while you can practice an hour to back into a 35 foot concrete slab at the Trailer Storage lot? You can practice and be less visible to those of us that had been similar victims in the past. It is just a matter of .... FIRSTS.

We all have been a NEWBIE and experienced those FIRSTS. What was yours?

Storage recommendations near PHX?

Does anyone have any personal recommendations for uncovered but secure storage near the Phoenix airport for a 25' Airstream?

We usually haven't had trouble finding storage last minute wherever we end up but in the PHX area, the well-reviewed places are full and the others have no reviews.

Not sure if this is the right place for this but would any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

AC Operating Question

A friend of mine has a 1997 Limited 34' trailer and is having problems with the cooling and heating system not working properly. He has changed the thermostat, but when you put in the cooling mode, the heat strip comes on and the furnace motor starts and the compressor is also running. What could the problem be. Is it with the thermostat or is with the mother board on the A/C?

1983 Airstream Excella 34 - Michigan

Title: 1983 Airstream Excella 34 - Michigan

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

This is a remarkable 34' Airstream Excella, triple axle. The interior is in amazing shape, with some updates done in the last few years. New Linoleum floor, new upholstery in dinette, new furnace and new refrigerator. This trailer has the coveted center bathroom and a full bed in the rear sleeping compartment. It also has a triple cedar lined closet.

This trailer was on the road, between Michigan and Florida (summer and winter), and parked once in its final destination for the season. I am the 3rd owner, however I have not actually used the trailer.

The trailer also has a Hensley "sway control" hitch, which is an approximately $3000 hitch. This is a really great option when you are towing a trailer because it takes the pivot point and moves it (virtually) to the rear wheels of your towing vehicle, essentially eliminating any side to side sway.

This will be a local pick up, as I do not have a vehicle to tow the trailer.

The Project

Ready to start a semi reno. About to attempt to build a front door closet, design and build a dinette with gas shock table, that will be made out of bamboo, and stained to look like a surf board. Change out counter tops and install new backsplash in kitchen and bathroom. New hot water tank, rear awning, new battery inverter and batteries. Also have to design and build stairs for short dogs that fold away, and have a cubby for extra storage for shoes, wonder who those are and how can you have so many sandals. For the outside , new stainless covers for the furnace, hot water tank and water tank filling outlet. I'll post pics if I can figure that part out. We start and soon as the snow is gone. Hope to get some feedback on the project and ideas. Looking forward to and new year of Airstreaming.

Wanting to know if??

From reading the various threads, it is safe to say most people prefer either a Honda or Yamaha inverter type generator.

At the current time and for the time in the near to mid future, Not able to afford one of them.

Hence these, they are in my price range, have a decibel of 53 at 23ft. Weighs in a just under 50lbs. Run time of 9 and a half hours at 25%load. Two can be combined to reach the magic 4,000 watts needed to run most everything in the AS. The other nice factor of this one is they are stackable.

1986 Airstream Sovereign 29 - Florida

Title: 1986 Airstream Sovereign 29 - Florida

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

Good frame, axles, wheels and tires. New electric jack and stove. Interior is completely apart. We disassembled it rivet by rivet to clean and inspect. Saved all frames for beds, couch, divider walls, etc. We took it apart by drilling out rivets and unscrewing screws. No hammers involved in disassembly. If it didn't come out easily, we kept looking for more rivets/screws until it came out easily.

Our intention when we bought this about 11 months ago was to basically disassemble the whole thing, down to the exterior walls, clean, inspect, and re-assemble, but with our modifications. We got only as far as the disassemble, inspect, and clean. Not re-assembled.

The interior wall panels are all removed from the inside of the Airstream, intact and most of them are stripped of the old vinyl coating that came from the factory. It was our intent to make the inside walls just polished aluminum. We got about half way done with that. Used CitrusStrip to pull off the vinyl.

We removed the old insulation so we could inspect the wiring and also have access to smooth out some dings on the exterior. So, right now, you see the "bones" and have access to the outside skin, from the inside.

Found it had small areas of soft wood in front corners of flooring, so they were cut out and replaced, and an additional layer of plywood screwed down on top of entire floor.

We have just about everything needed to put this back together except the time. Life changed and we haven't been able to work on it for the past 9 months and it doesn't look like that is going to change.

Trailer lights work (kept the trailer wiring hooked up and also the jack). Tows fine. Has the whole anti-sway hook-up and the tires are in really good shape. I've towed this at 70 mph. Bearings were repacked 11 months ago.

Interior wall panels are hanging from the walls in the barn. With the exception of one which on the work table (not getting worked on)....

Its got a good base and frame and was being used regularly by the couple that owned it before us. We bought it for $7400. Because we had to stop in the middle of reconditioning, I figured we better make it an attractive price. Not even sure what it should be priced at.....

1963 Airstream Overlander 26 - Missouri

Title: 1963 Airstream Overlander 26 - Missouri

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

1963 Overlander rebuilt by Uwe Salwender at Area 63 Productions. This meticulous shell off restoration was well documented on the Airforums.

Built to be his personal trailer, Uwe used the best materials and spent a great deal of time getting all the details right on this trailer. The cabinetry is solid wood, not heavy particle board. The cabinet and door faces are flame-top maple and birch and the counter tops are IKEA butcher block. The flooring is cork plank.

The interior was sprayed with grey zolatone in 2012. The recessed lighting in the ceiling was converted to LED chips. The under counter and accessory lights are incandescent, but can use the same LED chips as the ceiling.

Boondocking? No problem since this trailer was built for long weekends in Baja. Holding tanks include 55 gallon grey, 25 gallon black, 50 gallon fresh. The grey and fresh tanks are in the frame so they don't take up interior space. 10 gallon hot water heater.

Wait a sec..I don't see an AC unit. There is a ducted AC system that is under the mid-ship bed. No rooftop AC! Electrical was run in the event you wish to place one in the future by removing the middle fantastic fan.

Other features:

*3500 lb torsion axles with hydraulic disc brakes.

*30 lb worthington aluminum LP tanks.

*Reese dual cam WD/sway control system.

*Astradome and 2 fantastic fans.

*Two sleeping areas which sleeps 4 adults comfortable.

*Bose acoustimass home theater sound system with Kenwood head unit.

*Double sink from IKEA

*Catalytic heater.

Currently winterized in Southwest Missouri. All camping gear included with the unit (Mats, hoses, extensions cables, levelers, etc)

For negotiation in the deal is my Sealtech 430R leak detection system. If you ever spring a leak you can hook the machine up and find it. Bring the machine to rally events and make a few dollars on the side by testing some trailers.

Appraisal from Jim Polk at $68,500 for the trailer alone.

Many more pics available upon request. Serious inquiries only please.

PD4655 Converter Questions

Installed a PD4655 in my FC25FB. Big improvement. Now I am wondering about charging patterns using a generator.. I have two Honda Eu2000i generators I can run singly or in parallel. Does the time it takes to recharge the batteries change depending on whether I use one or two generators? Does it make a difference if I am also running the furnace at the same time? Lastly do I need a surge protector with a PD4655? The design seems to imply a surge protector is redundant. Thanks

Tankless/Instantaneous Water Heater Experiences

I have read extensively on the tankless water heater threads and really want to install one since our OEM water heater is shot. I have a 2005 28' International. I want to install an RV-550. Several people complained that the water proving switch does not activate at low water flows. One said its no problem. Is the flow sensor adjustable? We boondock about half the time we use our camper. Any input is greatly appreciated.

2006 Airstream Safari SS SE 25 - Oregon

Title: 2006 Airstream Safari SS SE 25 - Oregon

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

Go on Safari with this versatile model!

Compact enough to fit in scenic Nat. Forest Campsites, yet large enough to 'full time' or boondock off the grid.

3x5 ft freestanding two panel solar array with 50 ft of cord, allows full solar generation while parking in the comfort of the shade.

20 amp Phocos charge controller.

1000W Max Vector inverter, 120Volt output.

2000W Honda Generator.

12V LED replacement lighting.

75th anniversary special edition, features retro aluminum interior and oak cabinets. Halogen lighting or low draw LEDs.

Brakes and wheel bearings recently serviced.

New tires.

Purchased in 2006, original model year, barely used, from the original owner. Current owners used trailer primarily while parked as resident volunteers at wildlife refuges and retreat centers where toilet and shower facilities were provided. Consequently, bathroom is like new. (Shower stall doubles as a great wine cellar!).

Well maintained exterior clear-coat; minor dents and scratches result from routine use. Lovingly used and maintained.

1967 Airstream Overlander 26 - New Hampshire

Title: 1967 Airstream Overlander 26 - New Hampshire

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

This 26' Airstream has all the most expensive parts intact and in good condition. The aluminum panels need to be polished but are in really good shape with few minor dents, it has most of its original glass and screens although they need to be rescreened. The interior has all its original panels and molded jadeite green bathroom. The floor has a weak spot by the door but is sturdy and the roof leaks a little by the air conditioner. All the nasty carpet and appliances have been removed......it's pretty much a blank slate. I do have all the brackets to put the dividing walls in. It has its original sink and tub but it needs a toilet. As is common with the Airstream the floor in the bathroom where the toilet sat was soft.....no toilet or floor in that small patch but the rest of the bathroom is fine. This is a great project that with a little work will be worth more than double the asking price! Call Adrianne at 207-400-2685 for more details.

getting our airstream on the road again

Hello Everyone--

I have a 2000 25' Excella that I bought new, and I used it and loved it for about a year, then I had to put it in outside storage for what I thought would be a few months but turned into 14 years. I was at the sametime hopeful and anxious this past October when my wife, Kathy, and I drove to the storage lot to inspect the condition of the airstream - the first time since 2001.

The roof and window edges had thick moss, some surface rust on the a-frame part of the trailer, the 7-way plug was missing (vandalism I assume), but otherwise the outside was surprisingly in good condition. And then I opened the door and a wave of nostalgia wafted over me -- both the smell and appearance was almost as I remembered when I first set foot in it 15 years ago. That new smell is surprisingly persistent. Then we began noticing little things -- rodent droppings and acorn shells in the cabinets, a dinner plate size carpet stain, and and lots of orange-brown sticky residue on the wallpaper down the kitchen side of the trailer. All-in-all I was pleasantly surprised there wasn't more advanced disrepair.

We made arrangements with a local RV service center to transport the trailer to their shop to work on the obvious things: repalce tires, repack bearings, check brakes, repair the 7-way plug, and replace batteries. We also asked them to inspect all the various appliances/systems, and the seals on the roof. Three months and $5k later, we have a "usable" airstream. Kathy and I are very excited about getting it on the road and already have three mini vacations booked, but our work isn't over yet.

We moved the trailer to an indoor storage place that specializes in storing boats and RVs. Very nice and accommodating owners. Kathy and I have been there the past two Saturdays cleaning the interior and exterior, and developing a punch list of additional repairs we plan to do ourselves. Although I'm not a brand new owner, I am essentially still a newbie trying to figure things out. I hope to get some advice from the kind folks on this site. I won't overwhelm with our entire repair list here, but I would like to ask about just a few of them now, as follows:

1) a-frame surface rust. I read somewhere on Airstream Forums that the Airstream Store sells a "Touch Up" product but I can't seem to pull it up. Do they still sell it? What do others do about their surface rust?

2) Window Shades. Some of the chord anchors are broken and some of the other chords seem too short to fasten to the anchors that are still intact. (Truthfully, I think the RV center that did my initial repairs didn't know how to operate the shades and broke the anchors.) Any advice on where I can find matching replacement anchors? My initial web search was unsuccessful.

3) Wallpaper Stains. The orange-brown sticky residue on the wallpaper and carpet I mentioned earlier is a challenge to remove. I believe the seal around the airconditioner had cracked, allowing water to come in and caused this residue somehow. Has anyone experienced this? How did you clean it up short of replacing the wallpaper and carpet?

We have a lot more on our list, but this is enough for now. Thanks for listening!

--Steve

P.S., the repair center chased two mice out of one of the interior compartments, but we cannot figure out how the rascals got into the trailer because all outside access doors to the interior comparments still have new-like seals. And unless mice eat acorns, I assume we had squirls in there as well.

Outriggers!?!?

I've removed the shell from my 1960 safari. The floor is removed and the frame is bare. I need to replace a few outriggers and have found some replacements at Airstream Parts for new and vintage Airstream trailers.

At any rate, does anyone have some insight on where to purchase these and what length do they come?

Thanks for your input.

Duel Fueling a Dometic 50

Need some thoughts and opinions. I have a spare, working Dometic 50 sitting in my garage. I plan to either replace the current one I have with that one (mine has a flaky Klixon) or scavenge the Klixon and pilot assembly for my current. However, my latest odd thought was to see if there was some way to add an electric heating unit and new, non Klixon burner. I want to keep the original 50 look for the Tradewind, but would love something with an electric option and frankly a safer burner. Has anyone done this or know of anyone who does? The fridge is at my house in Indy and I heard a rumor of an Amish gentleman somewhere in Indiana that might be able to do something like this.

Front leak while driving in the rain!

I just drove home from Florida to SC in the rain yesterday and arrived with a small creek flowing through my 1975 Tradewind! It is seeping from beneath the inner skin at the floor pretty much all across the front. Where is the best place to start to look for this leak, and how? It does not leak when parked in the rain so I am thinking that it is being pushed into the camper from how it flows while driving. I have never removed the inner skin, how hard is it to get back how it belongs when pulled out? Thanks for any help!

27FB International Serenity. Purchased new in June, 2014. Has 3,700 miles on it. Has only been on two trips and housed in a heated aircraft hanger when not in use. Sticker price was $94,420 plus a comprehensive 7 yr/105,000 mile, mechanical protection plan that is transferable to the new owner. Tows beautifully behind a Ford F-150 eco boost 6 cyl truck. Too many options to list, but I can mail you a copy of the sticker that lists every feature. A few of the extras include 2 A/C’s, power awning, Taupe ultraleather, 3 burner stove plus oven, pantry with slide-out microwave, 2 HD TV’s, blue-ray, and complete sound system, dual-fuel refrigerator, large capacity gray, black, and freshwater storage tanks, loads of storage, and 1000W inverter. Niagara Peninsula Repair, Restore, Renovators.

Hi, looking for other like minded people in the Niagara area for mutual support of our affliction. In this climate we need as much help as we can get.

Any good new vans as a TV?

First - a brief apology. I am posting this anonymously - I have another user name in the forums but prefer not to use it at this time. As to why - I have recently been diagnosed with ALS. I don't really want it to be public for the time being.

So to my question - we own a 2015 25' Silver Cloud. Empty wt is around 5600 lbs. Loaded probably 6500.

We're thinking of replacing our TV with a van that could eventually converted for a wheelchair.

We can afford a new TV.

What have people's experiences been using a van as a TV?

Floor replacement time budget?

1979 31' Sovereign. I'm thinking of gutting the interior, and redoing it, frame on. But: I need to live in her in the summers, so the interior has to come out and the frame, floor and electrics have to be redone between October to mid - March, so that I can at least sleep on the floor in April to September while I chip away at the rest.

I can work on her pretty much full-time over the winter. So, is 5 1/2 months sufficient time to allow for that? Or is that going to be a rushed job?

Thanks...

WBCCI Numbers, Front or Back or Both?

I am not a member of WBCCI but will probably join at some point. I am more or less just doing my own family trips now.

I want to have my trailer name and home location done with vinyl lettering on the rear of my trailer, basically in the same spot the WBCCI numbers go. Is that a problem, if I join WBCCI later can I just put that number on the front?

Thanks

Random shaking/ghost in the machine

Our '81 28' Excella has a strange way of getting our attention, she shakes and quivers like she is in a 6.5 earthquake.

Seriously for no apparent reason she starts shaking, from steering wheel to bathroom it starts fairly suddenly without warning and becomes quite violent. It usually happens at speeds over 45 mph and the only thing that seems to help is to steadily accelerate until it passes this takes some nerve but we learned very quickly last summer that slowing down makes it worse and that speeding up will help it pass. We can drive for hours without any issue and all of a sudden it happens and then will go away and not return or may happen again 10 min later. I've checked the driveline from front to back and cannot see any obvious problems.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

Repaired tire

mercredi 25 février 2015

Any advice on how long to run on a professionally repaired tire on my 28ft AS?

They are Goodyear Marathon's with 8,000 miles & had a slow leak from a screw in the tread.

RB vs FB

Hi all,

Recently lurking newbys here, not AS owners as yet, but thinking about it...

We have seen a few posts about front bedroom vs rear bedroom.

It seems the only discussed advantage of one vs the other is the view from the windows when camped.

Perhaps we missed some posts. Are their other compelling reasons to consider a front bedroom vs rear? Seems to me the front of the trailer would get a smoother ride when travelling, so having a front dinette/kitchen might be better for appliances, glassware, etc.

Hope we're not opening a can of worms here...

Rear fuel pump expertise

Hi folks,

OK, so I've got the Chevy instructions for the rear fuel pump and vapor-lock fix (Chevy P-30 Vapor Lock Fix 1984.pdf). My question is, is there anything beyond what it says on those pages that a mechanic needs to know to address a failed rear fuel pump? Does it require an Airstream Classic MH old hand?

I'm asking because I had this fuel pump replaced a couple of years of ago and then, after very little use, it failed again. Now, I doubt the guy working on it had this document because I had forgotten at the time to give it to him. My Bad.

But now I've got the coach up in Portland. The local AS dealer has been very nice by the way, and helped me to research what needs to be done, even if they aren't the ones to do the work. But when they send out older rigs like mine for work, they're not sending them to garages where they've got a lot of experience with rigs like mine.

Can I just give them this Chevy P-30 Vapor Lock Fix 1984.pdf and expect them to do what needs to be done?

Thanks!

Spare rim for 2004 22 ft International

We are planning an Alaska trip from Missouri and I want a second spare tire. Where would be a good place to get a spare rim for our 2004?

Gas lamp operation / safety

Hi everyone. . My 75 31" Ambassador came with a gas lantern installed above the fridge. ( see attached photo ) the original owners or service manual makes no mention of this option.

I am in the process of renovating the interior and want to know if it is safe to use or worthwhile to keep?

Thanks,

Darrell

Vintage Appliances - Where are they?

Does anyone know of any pickers or another source of vintage RV appliances? I would love to replace mine in the galley of my Cruisette but don't even know where to begin to look. Do I have to buy a donor canned ham? HELP!!

Looking for Dometic parts (discontinued model)

Hi folks,

I think I got ripped off a year or so ago when someone replaced my old Dometic, in a 1986 345 MH, with a refurbished unit, but did not supply the parts to allow the thing to run on propane. Now I find from another Airstream dealer folks in Portland that the parts are discontinued. I'm hoping someone here is parting these out?

2943298030 (solenoid) and

3108706.023 (gas valve)

I don't have the model number for the fridge with me, that would take some digging, I'm just hoping the part numbers are enough for someone to answer me.

As I recall Mr. Kahler was parting out his 345 MH, so I'll PM him, too.

thanks!

strip and paint 34'

Hi Andy, I spoke with you in the past about getting my 1991 34' stripped and painted using the process that you used. You gave me a name of someone close to the Houston,TX area and I have looked everywhere for the info. and can not find it, must of gotten deleted or misplaced. If you could send me the contact that you are comfortable with doing a complete strip and paint using your process+steps, that was close to the Houston area. If you don't mind sending the information on your process and products that you used, so I can make sure everyone is on the same page. If anyone else has any advice or input feel free to advise...As always thanks for your time.

Where do I get Walbernize?

Hi there! I am so excited, we finally got an airstream after searching for the perfect one for 2 years! :)

Anyway, the previous owner gave us a 1/2 full bottle of Walbernize and I have used it up and need more! I don't want to be without it. Does anyone know where I can get it in So. California?

I have checked several websites, but shipping costs more than the product itself! I also tried emailing the company and they never responded, and called several RV suppliers (including Camping World), and they've never heard of it!

Need advice

My wife and I are looking at buying a 1985 Sovereign. Kind of a barn find, all original, been stored inside its whole life, even the tires are original. I am told that everything works nothing leaks. It has only been used a hand full of times in its life. what should I be worried about with the age of everything is it all going to need replacing soon since its hardly been used will it last for a long time? Just dont know enough. Any advice would be great. any ideas of a value of such a find? Thanks

Really Airstream?

Getting my 2005 19 ft Bambi International ready to escape the Tucson summers. Doing some fun projects like replacing all the halogen bulbs with LED's. In the process, realized you have to turn the "Vanity" lights on at the sink to get power to the dual ceiling lights in the toilet. Thanks AS, but I don't generally stop and check my face to use the loo at night. Anyone bypass this? Is AS just trying to make sure you wash your hands? :)

PS - I did do a search....

AIRSTREAM CLOTHING and Promotional ART

Harley Davidson tee shirts from Sturgis, South Dakota have some of the most beautiful tee shirt art. It makes Harley Davidson motorcycles an art form. Even though my first, and last motorcycle was a 90cc Honda trail bike... I still love wearing my Sturgis tee shirts. Especially if you catch the big rally AFTER the last day and get everything at 50% or MORE off.

Harley Davidson CREATES the illusion in ART form AND owner's supporting that image.

Airstream. Wow... a free floor mat with the purchase of a very expensive trailer.

Airstream. Wow... a possible jacket that... well, looks like Airstream is a low budget jacket brand from China.

Airstream... what in Hell is wrong with YOU?

Airstream Trailers HAVE a public that still is curious IF the company is still in business. The corporate offices must be those from General Motors and prefer to run the company into the ditch of lost opportunities.

Whenever I think of Airstream, I think of Airstream Rallies that line up like the bikes in Sturgis, South Dakota and... well... that is the end of the story.

Here is a corporation with a true American ICON known across the "modern world" (probably only the Western World). Yet... they treat this treasure and living off of some 1950's travels across Africa as if that was enough to keep the image alive. As a think tank at Corporate... you have to have the thickest skulls and deep set eyes like the Neanderthal taking the last gasp of lost opportunities towards and eventual future extinction.

I would never wear my Airstream...hat, coat... but do use the floor mat. Get with it guys. Go to Sturgis, SD and see how to promote an IMAGE. Anyone who sees an Airstream today at an RV Park think of the owners as a group of wine sipping old farts, too old to understand that there is more to an Airstream than flushing the toilet and operating the ceiling fans.

Oh yeah... the Airstream plastic Christmas tree ornaments. That took some time to dream up. Ceramic Airstream dust collectors.

Even the Crazy Horse Monument has better promotional material to further their current and future work at their monument to a great Sioux Indian warrior.

And Airstream... a simple coffee cup.

Something other than AS

I've been lurking here a few years. I thought long and hard about getting an Airstream, but in the end, settled on something different.

I decided to go with an Oliver Legacy Elite II. I needed a very durable trailer to use in extremely cold weather as lodgings near jobsites I work at. My monster 5th wheel trailer was just not cutting it.

This probably has zero appeal for most of you, but if your curious, and maybe get some ideas for mods on your existing trailers, then please look over my lengthy review on my blog. I warn you it's long with over 80 pictures, so I didn't want to pollute airforums with all that.

1979 Airstream Argosy Minuet 7.3m - Illinois

Title: 1979 Airstream Argosy Minuet 7.3m - Illinois

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

Very rare 24' Argosy Minuet by Airstream. This is the 7.3 meter, a very hard to find camper.

Please contact us to view this camper in person. No roof leaks, solid floor, all original upholstery exists under existing covers. Camp in it as it is, or restore. Fridge works. We never used the furnace (was told it was unsafe due to the age), water heater worked when we last used it, but the tank has a split. It's a 35 year old camper. Don't expect perfection and you will be happy. Comes with hitch and sway bars. Has 6 original storage bins and all original paperwork in photo. Use the back with twin beds and bunk, or use the backrest to make the twin beds into a king. Don't hesitate to ask questions. Better yet, come see it in person. Will include a vintage awning not original to camper, but looks great (see photos). Station wagon, boat, and happy campers not included.

Available for viewing in Wilmington, IL.

Axle hacks

I'm putting a new set of axles on my '72 27' Overlander. Actually, the local trailer shop is. Based on what I've read here, I could handle it myself but due to current weather conditions I think it would be better to pull it into a shop. What I'm looking for here is tips and suggestions from the folks who've done it. Things like being sure to mount the shock to the axle before mounting the axle to the frame. Torque requirements on lugs, brake parts, etc. How long it took per axle. Really just some things I can maybe print off for the installer to help prevent surprises. The complete axles are ordered and shipped so hopefully we don't have to go into "who from" and "why there?" So far I've been PB Blasting for a week and hoping the ground stays froze so I can get it pulled out of where it's at. I've read just about every axle thread on here and I'm looking forward to a concise, constructive thread of helpful suggestions for the project.

(Perhaps when it's done I'll update how it went and maybe even divulge "from who" and "why there?' for the folks who think they have to know. Maybe.)
