Propane Regulator - Which to use with SeeLevel 2 System?

mercredi 31 décembre 2014

Ok, full disclosure here, I'm REALLY green when it comes to this kind of stuff, but I'm learning a lot as we renovate our '79 Excella. The topic today is what to do about the propane system...

We're using the SeeLevel 2 Tank Monitoring system (http://ift.tt/1BnMQ0s) which has the ability to display the remaining level of propane in percent. Our Excella has 2 x 40lb propane tanks connected by a regulator which supplies fuel to all the gas-operated things in the camper.

With all that being said, my question is this: what do I need to be able to monitor the tank levels using the SeeLevel 2 panel? Is there supposed to be a sensor on each tank? Or is there supposed to be a sensor on the regulator to report the percent full? I see neither in my current setup, so I'll need to buy something to make this work, just not sure what.

1. Do I need something like this Manchester Sender Unit? http://ift.tt/1xiilK6. If so, when one tank is empty and I switch to the other, how would the SeeLevel system know to begin monitoring the 2nd tank? Would I have to manually switch the sensor cable from one to another?

2. Or maybe I need a sensor built into the regulator; something like this? Propane Regulator Valves on Sale - PPL Motor Homes. I don't think this exact unit would work for my application since the "sensor" they mention sounds like it's just a light on top of the device itself.

Any advice, or pictures of your setup (with remote level monitoring) would be appreciated, thank you!

Hitch Recommendations Wanted for 25RB-BMW X5d combo

Hello - I'm new to this forum business, so please bear with me as I launch my ship into uncharted waters.

As the title suggests, I am looking for hitch recommendations for towing our new 2015 25RB behind my 2012 BMW X5d. We've gained extensive experience over the last two seasons pulling our 2012 19 Flying Cloud using both Equal-i-zer and Eaz-Lift hitches. Can-Am RV did a great job at reinforcing the X5's receiver in anticipation of the heavier load the 25RB will present. My sense is that both hitches handle weight distribution well, but that the Equal-i-zer had better sway control properties. Unfortunately, those square bars didn't provide much vertical flex.

The Eaz-Lift saddles and sway control components are welded onto the 19FC, and we intend to keep that trailer for a while so I need to replace those components, if not just buy an entirely new hitch to pull the 25RB.

I'm confident in the X5d as a capable tow vehicle, and anxious to take delivery next week of our new 25RB. So the question is this: does anyone out there have modest-to-significant experience with the X5d-25RB combo, and, if so, what hitch are you using? And are you satisfied with it?

To the extent possible, I'd like to optimise the Weight Distribution : Sway Control equation without breaking the bank. I appreciate learning of your experiences, and hearing your thoughts and recommendations

Many thanks, and Happy New Year,

Rod Fierek

Flexible baseboard molding

Just put in a floating laminated floor, still need to complete all the base board moulding. Looking for ideas, currently thinking about using flexible quarter round. Did a quick search and it appears that there are several companies offer this type of molding. Some of these can be stained and looks like wood.

Anyone ever use this type of product? Any suggestion?

I'm wondering what everyone has paid for their new trailers? I know last years models (2014) can go up to 20% off sticker price, but Im looking at a new 2015 Eddie Bauer?

Please let me know the MSRP of your model and what you actually paid, this way I can present a fair offer.

Rebuilding 70's vintage wing windows, need some examples

Like the title says, I will be working on the front wing windows on my '73 Overlander. The streetside window actually has evidence of filling up with water, probably well before I became the owner.

Looking at the windows, I'm not sure if they were ever previously removed. It looks like most of the rivets are olympics, and there is an overly generous layer of butyl tape on top of the inside flange, almost as if somebody tried to seal it up after the fact.

What I'm hoping to see is how other folks have taken these windows out, taken them apart and then put them back together and reinstalled so they dont leak. I don't want to do this job a second time, and I'm sure plenty of folks have some stories to tell. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Ultra Leather Replacement Cushion Covers

The 2015 sports have an ultra leather option. I, however, have a 2013 22' Sport model. Based on the brochure pics, the cushions look the same, just different covers. Anyone know if Airstream will just sell me the covers? I wonder how much it would be. I was going to look in the parts manual for a 2015, but there isn't one online. Go figure! Anyone know if Airstream will sell just the cushion covers? Anyone with a 2015 22' Sport have the parts manual and could see if there's a part number for them? Any opinions on ultra leather? The current fabric on our cushions is itchy and hard to clean, not fun. Is the ultra leather tough enough for a dog's feet?

Initial experience, sprinter class B,

HAPPY NEW YEAR! prematurely but sincerely meant!

My wife and I are about to embark on an adventure defined as a new experience to test the hypothesis that we would like to become ASIers. What we are doing is renting a B type sprinter, Era, Winnebago 170x, for a month. We live in Bend Oregon but will be renting from a place in Eugene, Or. and leaving from there. I have been diligently reading the "forum" threads trying to get as much knowledge as I can. Here is the issue! Having no experience relative to ASIing, I know I'm missing critical questions to consider. SO I'm looking to the "HORSE'S MOUTH" :D, for fatherly advice and motherly advice too, Please.

It is our intention to take the van south to Las Vegas to visit friends, then to AZ to visit friends, and return visiting friends. We are interested in looking at future snow bird opportunities around Lake Las Vegas and Az. too. We're open to suggestions.

So what would be your best "AH HAH!!" moment, I should of thought of that! Recommendations, if you would please. ( another significant factor that I failed to mention is we are planning on taking our 8month old German Shepherd pup with us) She is a great traveler and pleasure to be around.

We have done primitive camping before but our bones don't bend like they once did!:) Thank you in advance!!

Furnace motor squealing

I just turned on my furnace for the first time. It is functioning but it sure is making a loud noise on the outside. It is a high-pitched sound that I am pretty sure is abnormal and will disturb my neighbors. Any suggestions? Thanks.

camping on old US 66

Boondocking on old US66 between Kingman and Ash Fork AZ.

We are interested if anyone has stayed or knows of any dry camping spots along this stretch of old Route 66 "now Az state highway 66" .

We will be traveling the Mother Road on the 3rd of April and would love to camp along this fine old original stretch of pure Americana and listen for the ghosts of old dust bowl, great depresion travelers as they pass by seeking the "promise of a better life" out in California .

Will be our first time on this section of 66 and would like it to be "special" for the wife and grand kids "if they get to go.

Will be headed west and a spot toward Kingman would be nice .

I hear Peach Springs was the inspiration that turned into Radiator Springs on the "Cars" movie.

We will be in a 3/4 ton Dodge , pulling a short 22 ft Safari two axle Airstream with a bit of added ground clearance,

and don't mind some dirt and rocks.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's Never Done.....

OK, so we got the nose off the 325 on Saturday. Definitely the water pump leaking. did the compression check, I was quite surprised to get the numbers I got...145 to 155. Found out the previous owner had the alternator replaced in Oregon, still had the sticker on it. I scored a brand new one for 80 bucks (Rock City) had the one I took out tested, it was good so I will keep it as a spare. I got all new AC Delco ignition parts, (Rock City). I sent the carburator down to Long Island, a buddy of mine is still in business rebuilding them. I used to use him in the 1980"s when I was a mechanic we had emisssion testing starting in 1980. every manufacturer that made carburators had trouble (Varijets/Thermoquads/Variable venturies etc. Thats all this guy did and he made quite a business for himself. I found all of the original belts and hoses (Gates) and I am also changed the million feet of heater hose going back to the aux. heater under the couch, and the new hot water heater that Atwood finally came through with last week. The water pump is a brand new Napa unit with a lifetime warranty... boy I hope it sure doesn't leak after I install it ! The original oil cooler lines were leaking...I'm having trouble locating them so I am going to have new ones made locally here in Albany. Oh and did I mention the 40 or so feet of vacuum line that I am changing ? Moving to the inside...got the new shower door installed Friday, new toilet last week, new medicine cabinet last week. The new hot water heater I got also has electric so I used the factory Trash Compactor circuit for the wiring.

Water valves and underbelly tubes

mardi 30 décembre 2014

I have the service manual for a '72 but it doesn't go into detail about what the water valves do in the different locations. It also doesn't say where all the tubes exiting the bottom come from.

Has anyone made a list somewhere I haven't found yet? I have 3 under the galley, one by the hot water heater in the cabinet and 2 or three in the rear by the battery.

For example, looking under the trailer today on the curb side, midway just under the wrap, I saw a rubber hose that was disintegrating. I have no idea where it comes/goes or what it does.

Thanks. Any help is appreciated.

Rare, well maintained Ocean Breeze Front Bedroom model in excellent condition with several upgrades. When we made the upgrades, we kept in mind that someday, the new owner might want to revert to the original Ocean Breeze look. There are some permanent upgrades, but these improvements will not affect the look of the Ocean Breeze look.

Here's a list of the modifications:

Blackout backing for the curtains. As most Airstreamers know, the original backing is fairly flimsy and lets in a lot of light, especially security lighting at campgrounds. My wife sewed the "blackout" backing that not only cuts down on external lighting, but also cuts down on the heat during the summer.

Cushions - We like the original Ocean Breeze design but we decided to cover the original upholstery so that looks like new, clean and unused.

Entrance Cabinet - We quickly realized that we did not have a place to set our keys, wallet, etc, when we came in. I replaced the large sofa cushion with a custom cabinet I built in my workshop. It has a power strip inside to support charger cables, and a recessed lid to keep things from sliding off. It's finished in white Formica to match the rest of the interior. This can be removed and replaced with the original cushion if desired.

Storage Cabinet - I replaced a cushion with a custom made 28" X 32" storage cabinet. This also adds countertop space. Covered in white Formica to match the rest of the interior. This can be removed and replaced with the original cushions if desired.

Air Conditioner - In November 2013, we upgraded the A/C to a new 15,000 BTU Dometic heat pump. The changeout was done by an authorized Airstream dealer. The difference in cooling is incredible.

MaxxAir II Vent Fans replace the two original Fantastic Fans. These fans are much more substantial than the originals, and have covers so they can be used in the rain.

Skylights - Over-torquing the screws on the original skylights on many units is fairly well documented. Instead of using the factory skylight, I used the "Maxim Custom Skylights" for a far superior solution. Google the term on Airforums.com to learn more.

Wheels and Tires - In October 2014, I upgraded to the 16" wheels and Michelin LT tires, the same ones currently being installed on the Eddie Bauer model.

Send me a message if you would like more details.

2015 Flying Cloud 27FB Twin

The DW and I are looking to trade the 2014 Flagstaff Super Lite for a 2015 Flying Cloud 27FB Twin. Love the idea of no slide issues and all the other mechanical problems (they have not happened yet but who knows) for a more simpler life. Not all too familiar with the Airstream other than they have been around longer than I have been.

Can anyone offer up some issues to be aware of before we sink many G's into an Airstream? Any known issues during the walk through? Plumbing issues? Axle issues? Cold walls issue and one that I have been reading about, oxidation at the rivet seams?

If you have anything to help with the possible new purchase, please chime in.

I am a active member of the Forest River forums and I am constantly giving advise but find myself outside my knowledge base here.

Thanks, Chuck

Screen refresh problem

Today I've noticed a problem getting pages to finish loading in a normal length of time. Such as when I was starting this new post, the banner at the top came up quickly, the area that has "User CP", "Clubs", "Vendors", etc loaded normally, the "Post New Thread" text area was there, but then it stuck for 20-30 seconds saying, "Waiting for a.oogala.com...". Then it finished loading the screen.

I use Ubuntu OS and FireFox. Normally no issues, and other sites work fine.

Bathroom door window help

Hey all you fancy-pants international owners :D 😄 I do not have a window in my sport bathroom door but would like to add one. Just to get more light coming in. I have the part numbers but before I order them... Your doors look thicker than my door in pictures I have seen.

So I'm wondering if anyone with a bath door window would help me out by measuring the thickness of their door for me?

I asked Airstream and have not got a response yet and the nearest dealer for me to measure it myself is 4 hours away. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Pioneer surround sound/tv questions

Hi all! We recently purchased a 2014 airstream international and cannot figure how to get the surround sound to work on tv or dvd/blu Ray. Aluminum walls are cold!

We just camped for the first time in our new to us 2005 Airstream Interstate.

It was in the low 40's at night, and we did have the heater on appropriately.

But boy, those walls beside the bed are really cold! COLD!

I would love to hear what some of you have done to combat those cold walls. You just can't help but touch them somethings during the night.

Center Caps

I asked in another thread but thought maybe no one would answer my question, since that thread seems to have been beaten to death. 1968 Tradewind Shell Removal?

OK, I've read through several posts regarding the removal of the shell in order to replace a rotten sub-floor. What I am trying to figure out is a simple step-by-step on the process.

I've removed all of the interior skins, insulation and aluminum wire and will start the next step once I get a little clarity on the process.

Here is my basic understanding, so please jump in and correct me before I do something stupid:

1. remove belt trim

2. drill out rivets holding body to u-channel

3. remove screws/rivets holding the wrapped body panels to belly pan

4. using a gantry lift the shell off of the frame by chain hoisting through vent openings fore and aft

5. pull chassis out from under shell

Seems like it is a straight forward operation. My questions are:

1. do the u-channels stay on the sub-floor, or do you leave them attached to the skin? (will dictate whether to drill rivets, or split nuts)

2. several posts mention that bracing is not required when lifting from the top, is that really true?

3. this seems so straight forward, what am I missing?

I will be replacing the entire sub-floor and the majority (if not all) of the u-channel. The u-channel is pretty shot in most areas due to corrosion/rusty bolts. Also the entire back end has pulled away from the -u-channel that area is the worst for corrosion/rot.

I will put up some pictures and start a post, but want to make sure it doesn't become a "how not to" forum.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

This trailer was purchased in Az. and has been in a temperature controlled garage for most of its life. I just can't justify keeping it anymore because I don't use it much any longer. Its a 75th anniversary edition and has twin beds ands a front bedroom

I have pulled it with a Dodge 2500 Ram diesel pickup and it pulls like a charm. I get 19 mpg pulling with this vehicle which is also for sale.

added extras: zip dee screen room

2 Honda generaters

Title: 1969 Airstream Tradewind 25 - Illinois

I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f116...ct-105682.html

Vintage 1969 Airstream Tradewind Land Yacht 25’ (Will be better than a new one)

Being built better than original! The trailer is an empty blank canvas for you to create your masterpiece!

This trailer is ready for your dream customization with ALL the hard foundation work being completed. Finish this out into your dream camper or make it into a food-trailer, or that specialty mobile sales trailer or even an advertisement piece. Trailer title included!

To truly appreciate all the hours spent to get the Airstream to this stage, please check out my blog I created to document the reborn journey of this trailer. Here is the link for you to copy and paste.

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f116...ct-105682.html

This is a frame off restoration that has ALL the major components completed and needs that special someone to see it through. I have spent 1000’s of hours restoring this beauty. A similar completely finished trailer recently sold on EBAY for over $20,000. I will continue to work on this trailer until it has been sold or completed. As I get closer and closer to completion, the price obviously will increase to reflect the additional time and money I will be putting into it. I have a running spreadsheet of total $ invested and most receipts.

I love this trailer and would love to see it through, however our family needs have changed since I started this labor of love.

This trailer is towable, but temporary tail lights would need to be wired (which I could do if needed)

What has been completed…..the walk around.

THE FRAME

-Has been completely gone through

-Outriggers supports that were corroded away were replaced with new steel C-channel

-Rear Curbside frame that was rusted was cut out and replaced and reinforced with new steel.

-Original torsion axles were removed and replaced with new custom built torsion axles ordered specifically for this trailer, from Colin Hyde, a professional Airstream restorer. The axles were built for 3500lb rating, at my request, instead of the original 3000lb rating.

-The whole frame has been completely rustproofed with 2-3 coating of POR 15 rust inhibitor black paint. (This was no fun task!)

-New Axel shocks were installed

-New wheel wells were custom constructed from 1/8” steel and replaced the “tin” sheet metal fenders. (If you have a tire blowout, it will provide extra protection from ripping the side of your trailer apart.”

-The original Airstream only had 1 waste tank. That was discarded and (2) brand new black tanks were installed on the framework, with discharge piping and valves. One for grey water and one for Black water.

-The step was removed and sandblasted. Coated with POR 15 and reinforced.

THE Aluminum SHELL

-The whole curb side aluminum was replaced with the correct aluminum.

-The front curbside was replaced

-The original Airstream Ceiling fan was replaced with a new reliable Fantastic Fan (Black)

-The tv antenna was removed and proper riveted, sealed aluminum patch was made.

-The broken radio antenna was removed and a proper riveted, sealed aluminum patch was made

-The antiquated, heavy air conditioner was removed and the AC slot has been properly reinforced to hold the brand new low profile AC for a sleeker look.

-Wall beams have been reinforced better than the factory provide.

-Weak or rotted original floor channel has been replaced with beefier aluminum C-channel.

-The aluminum shell has been properly bolted down to the steel frame with hardened steel bolts.

-The clear coat has had 4 coats of paint stripper applied to remove the factory clear coat so the trailer can be polished.

-New T-handle and hardware on rear compartment door

THE WOOD DECK FLOOR

-The ½” original wood floor was removed

-3/4” Plywood was used as a replacement to beef up the floor better than original.

-The ply wood was 3-coat, clear epoxy coated on all sides and edges, for lifetime protection from water and rot (the original untreated ½” floor lasted 40 years and was still hard to remove)

WINDOWS AND DOORS

-The entry door was completely rebuilt. The original broken Bargman lock was replaced with a newer, cleaner look, style RV door lock. The door was insulated and aluminum was reskinned.

-Both front windows have the original curved glass. The Curb side window was removed and repacked and caulked.

-I plan on sealing all the windows from the inside while the interior aluminum skin is removed.

-I have new window and door seals that will go with the trailer. Installed if I get to it.

AWNING

I have all the working hardware for the original awning that is included. The awning canvas needs to be replaced.

OTHER ITEMS INCLUDED WITH THE SALE OF THE TRAILER

-(4) Brand new aluminum star rims with radial tires (installed)

-All the original interior aluminum skin. This is not installed yet because I am in the process of insulating and wiring the trailer.

-All new LED tail light and marker lights- not installed. I got all clear amber and marking lights to blend with the silver. They light up red or amber as they should when on.

-I have the original bathroom complete that will go with the trailer (without original toilet). I had not planned on reusing the original bathroom, but making a custom bath or wet bat instead.

-Shower pan (I planned on making a wet bath

-A RV propane furnace (not installed)

-A RV style stovetop and oven combo (not installed)

-A RV style stovetop exhaust hood with light.

-A brand new potable water tank (not installed)

-original spare tire

-Any and all extra aluminum new and old sheets.

-I have several of the interior original walls and trim (not installed) that is included.

-All remaining buck rivets and Olympic rivets.

-All remaining Airstream caulk

-Clay bar aluminum polishing bars and buffing pads

-RV style 7 way plug and cord to vehicle

-RV water fill hook up (stainless steel)

-All the original Airstream lettering

-Camper manual leveling jacks

-Airstream original gaucho bed slide

- I have buckets and containers full of original parts that go with the trailer.

-RV 30 amp electric connection (stainless steel)

-25’ of 30 amp power cord

-A RV power distribution panel 30amp ac with breakers and 12v dc built in inverter.

-A RV water pump (not installed)

-Brand new Coleman Low profile air conditioner with heat strip and thermostat. –not installed

-A Dometic full size 3-way RV refrigerator/ freezer (runs on electricity/ propane/ and 12V) –not installed

-A Dewalt 9” new polisher

-Nuvite F9 polishing compound

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE (I am working on/ towards)

-The windows need new seals installed (I have some new seals I will include)

-The windows and all seams will be sealed on the inside (prior to insulating)

-The LED lighting needs to be installed (I have been holding off on this while I try to polish where the lights are so the lights don’t interfere with the polishing process.

-I am in the process of installing the belly pan.

-Needs new awning material and installed.

This item is for sale locally. It would be best to come out and inspect this beauty. I will answer any questions honestly and openly.

I can be reached anytime at 815-585-2454 for questions or to set up an inspection

Husband uses a C-Pap

If we bought a Bambi, is there anywhere near the bed to accommodate a C-Pap? I don't see even a small night stand in a Bambi, or in any of the models with a corner bed. What's an old RVer to do?

What does "FB" stand for?

What does FB mean in floor plan description?

Winter Travel

We just purchased a 2014 Interstate. It is located in New Jersey and we would like to pick it up in mid January and drive it back to Houston.

Is it realistic to plan on having two nights on the road without a power hookup in nighttime temperatures of 18 to 20 F. I would plan to get the van either to a power hookup or to an area of above 32 F temperatures after two nights.

Can we use either the generator or the diesel to provide enough power for the tank heaters and run the furnace?

Also I am curious on how much time the tank of propane would last if we only ran the generator and furnace for 8 to 9 hours at night.

Any insight would be appreciated.:wally:

2013 Airstream Flying Cloud FB Bunkhouse

Buy this beauty before my wife changes her mind! Great camper, has been out only on a few trips. Leather upgrades to interior, 3 LCD TV's, Bunk Bed at rear, big fridge, 2 A/C, ducted furnace, LED lighting, 600w inverter, 2 Fantastic Fans, I could go on and on! She has been stored inside since we bought her new in late 2013, and before that she was on a showroom floor indoors. This is great family camper. Beautiful inside and out, we are going to miss her. Needing to get rid of her to buy some land. We know we'll be airstreamers again down the road, we have to let her go now.

SODA REFILLS on the Road...

Yes... I have time on my hands. I also had a 30" snow shovel in them today and running my ATV with a 48" plow in the front with a wind chill that had to be Arctic Summer at the best. So cut me some slack time in my comfort zone... the Air Forums.

There are several kinds of Soda Fountains. I know, I worked in an office for a major soft drink company. Their Cola was a bit sweet for my tastes, but it was an interesting job, if anyone can say interesting and job in the same sentence. I lasted six months... but had a better deal going on and resigned.

There are Regions that a bottler can distribute their line of soft drinks. The plant is printed on the can or bottle cap. Almost like Bootleggers... one distributor WILL NOT cross boundaries that the Main Company designates as... Their Territory.

Two Options, maybe Three if you pick up a 2 liter or package.

Pre Mix: It is made by the Soft Drink Bottler at the plant and in a large cylinder. The soft drink(s) are, or should, taste exactly like those coming out of the bottle or can. When it comes out of the fountain... it is ONE COLOR. The carbonated water and syrup have been PRE... MIIXED. Get it? OK. This will or should taste like the local bottler's product. Should.

There is a 'brix tester". You can even buy one for yourself. The PROFIT in a soda is not adding too much SYRUP into the carbonated water... which the CO2 and H2O mix. Too little soda and it tastes... weak, it also is more profitable. I use to carry a Brix Tester around while out of the office to see who was "shorting on the syrup". A Corporate tester is usually working at the major bottlers to test that the bottler is not cutting the syrup to make a bit extra money after 100,000 bottles or cans are filled and delivered. You get the picture? Brix: measuring syrup to water percentages.

Post Mix: This is where the Brix Tester is really needed. The syrup is added to the water at the site of delivery... YOUR REDUCED PRICE REFILL CUP. You will see carbonated water and a stream of syrup being added as you fill. The Soda Company (usually Pepsi or Coke) sets the syrup volume to the carbonated water ratio. There is a... number... that is optimum. Do not go lower... but if you want to make the soda a bit more tasty... add more syrup. It is the Concentrated Syrup that costs money. The ice you add... I call it... PROFIT. My Dad worked as a Soda Jerk in High School in Montana and the boss said... "son... add ice... it is PROFIT."

Post Mix can taste better than the most expensive whiskey or wines. There is a spot in Idaho that I wanted to go back and fill up my two 5 gallon plastic jugs with their Coke. It was the best I had ever tasted. It is not unusual for the owner of the business to "tweak the syrup" down to make a few extra bucks. I CAN TASTE THE DIFFERENCE! I can also tell Pepsi, Coke and Royal Coke (RC) apart... and the ???? colas as, what is this $#^%.

This is a "light subject" discussion for any soft drink lovers, as I am while on the road in the Summer travel. I never did write down the gas station with convenience store, souvenirs, junk food and week old hot dogs rolling on a toasting oven in IDAHO north of the Interstate... but it had that fresh syrup flavor just out of the Factory.

The WORST Post Mix soda in the USA. I had some. The local water has SO4 in it... that is sulfur. SWEET SPRINGS, MISSOURI. You have to taste it to believe it. It would be like straining the gym socks of your teenage son after being worn for one whole season at High School. Most of the stations now, would be using PRE MIX from the soda plant outside Kansas City or St. Louis.

What is your favorite SODA while on the road, and where? Soda is still more expensive per gallon than gasoline... but tastes a... whole...lot better.

need advice for buying a new three burner stove

I decided to put in a new counter top with a new 3 burner gas stove for my 1973 Overlander. The old was OK but I decided to upgrade the counter top and thought I might as well go with a new cook top. I want a three burner with a cover for the burners. I know I can go with Atwood or Suburban plus a couple of other brands. Anybody have any recommendations? I will start shopping online tomorrow.

Southwest Spring time boondocks in the Cochise Stronghold (AZ)?

Hi all,

Heading back to Cochise this spring but in will be the first time in Hummingbird (our 19ft 2010 Flying Cloud.) We've camped several times in the area in our camper van but am worried about trying to get our new "baby" into some of those sites, especially on the West side.

We know about the Eastside campground but prefer to boondock and especially like staying on the west side for the climbing and hiking options. Any suggestions?

If you haven't made it out to Cochise yet.....it's near Tombstone and....just don't tell anybody about it ;)

Thanks!

Atwood G6A-7E smelling gas.

Had a leak in the Bypass valve connector(s). Replaced valve with a new, different type - no leak anymore, but there is a distinct smell of propane in the sleeping area (bed id on top of waterheater). In the process of replacing the Bypass valve - had to take the unit out. Is there any reason why we have the gas smell in the sleeping area?

Problems with black tank clogging above tank?

Sorry for the lousy description here, tried searching, but the terms are probably limiting my results.

So our tank is empty, and you know how there is the opening that is cone shaped under the toilet above the tank, it seems to be getting blocked easily and the waste is not falling down into the tank. We have to use a stick and keep pushing it thru and then everything falls down into the tank.

I've done yelled at the wife already about TP, and we use the stuff for RV's that is rated for black tanks, but still, when I flush I can see it all sitting there.

Anyone have any ideas, or solutions or toilet edict we should be following?

Even filling up the whole bowl isn't moving it.

Maybe our TP is the problem. Really don't want to keep jamming a stick in there, as that's gross, and requires me to bag and dispose of said stick.

'65 Airstream Bumper Replacement Woes

I can't seem to find a stock bumper to replace the one on our Caravel. It was rear-ended, mildly, minutes before we took delivery. Only the bumper got bent, the accident didn't get into the body, so I figured it would be an easy fix and bought the old girl anyway. Well, after doing everything I wanted, and needed to make it roadworthy, I am left with the last detail - the bent bumper. I could (and probably will) attempt to straighten it with heat and my big ol' vice, but I have doubts. I looked online and inquired at AS resources and have come up empty handed. If I can't straighten it reasonably, I think my options look like to try to take it to a professional old school body man -or- find some kind of custom hotrod type stamped steel bumper. Are there any other options? Any opinions/suggestions?

Towing problem

Im just towing my 1972 Overlander 72 for the first time today. I ran into a problem. I was in front of my house about to back it into the driveway and the brakes on the trailer locked, I can not back this up. I drove a little way down the street checked the pigtail and all seems ok, the lights and blinkers etc, work. It just wont back up. What am I doing wrong or is there something I need to know? Thanks for any help.

How do I set up portable (outside the RV) HD Satellite TV?

I'd consider getting a satellite unit for my 2012 20' Flying Cloud if I could set it up fairly easily and use it at home as well.

I don't understand how even if I have a portable unit something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Satellite-Oasi.../dp/B005110PXA

How I hook it up to the TV inside the AS and get HD?. The only external hookup I think I have is an coaxial cable for traditional cable TV. Is there some sort of external HDMI hookup I can use with a DirecTV receiver?

I'm just curious how it gets hooked up without leaving the door open.

Cold weather travel

I have seen a number of threads where folks are traveling from cold to warm or warm to cold areas and I am curious how do you handle the cold weather? My AS is currently winterized, but stored in a heated garage.

How would I go to Florida and back? I would need to leave winterized, then on my way back I need to winterize before I get back up here? The manual says I can travel through cold weather because my furnace is ducted into the basement around the tanks, so I am little confused on how best to go about doing it. Thanks.

Parts

How hard is it to get parts for 20-year-old coaches? Other than body, any proprietary parts?

Pro's and con's of a dually vs single wheel tow vehicle.

I ask this as I am working on the idea of trading a 1 ton GMC Dually for a 3/4 ton GMC Single wheel Drive truck. I tow a 25 FC. Seems like a good idea as the 1 ton Dually is a Beast Mode truck. Good for a large camper but unnecessary for a AS 25. And it would be nice to own a truck that actually fits in my garage and more graceful in the parking lots :) I am looking for opinions....

Motorhome Generator

I have the Kohler Model 7CM21 Generator 7,000 watt in my 1984 Motorhome. I am having issues with low voltage and incorrect hz. The Generator runs fine no surging output is 110 volts with no load and 105 volts with 1500 watt load. The main issue is the hz, at no load it is 275 hz and with a 1500 watt load it is 273 hz. When I turn off the Generator and plug the Motorhome electrical cord into regular AC outlet from the Garage I get 121 volts at 60 hz, in the same outlet in the motorhome that I measured the Generator voltage, so I know my meter is accurate. What are some of the items I should be checking to improve my output voltage and obtain the correct hz?

I may have "messed up"

I believe that I had some electrical issues since sometimes the electrical step was not coming down, and some of the DC lights were only working from time to time. I am not sure what "that" issue was, however, now after my latest flubber, something major is now wrong.

I was under the assumption that the large 3 prong plug was 220. I bought a female receptacle that matched the plug from the RV. I tapped the plug from my 220 line for my welder. Plugged in the RV to the 220 and left it for about 7 or 8 hours.

NOW, most of the DC electrical does not work, and some of the AC electrical does not work. Any suggestions? I have not started checking fuses, but I think that the "box" that converts the AC to DC is the culprit.

Any suggestions? :(

Bob's 2014 F-150 report.

:) Hi, On October 6th 2014 I bought a new 2014 F-150. I brought it home and took the family for a short drive in it. [about 20 miles] On the 7th of October I managed to get my Lincoln hitched up to my Safari, park my new F-150 in the garage with my wife's BMW X-3 with trickle chargers on both of them. Then on the 8th of October, we left for a two month vacation. Now we have been home for a while and I'm working on getting my 1,000 mile break-in done before towing duty. Today I bought my first tank of gas. Hard to believe that I actually own a full sized pick-up that will go over 500 miles on one tank. My Lincoln, BMW, 59 Galaxie, and Aprilia all took Premium gas and I had to rehearse asking for Regular. In Oregon I can't fill my own tank, by law.

'71 Sovereign front door is sagging

I'm going through all the things that need fixing on my new '71 Sovereign. The front door is sagging where the hinge is attached to the body. Before I close the door I need to push it toward the back of the trailer to get it square in the opening. Once it's in the opening it fits fine.

Anyone have a picture of how it's held on? It looks like I need to take the galley cabinet out and the interior panels off to get access. I want to know what I'm getting into before I tear into it.

Yosemite...without AS. Suggestions?

Hi all.

Though this may not be the right place, but i thought I'd ask here first.

Wife and I are planning a trip in early May to Yosemite. Unfortuneatley due to time we won't be able to do the drive from Chicago to the valley woth our Bambi in tow. We will be flying to San Fran renting car, then staying.....somewhere.

Problem we have found is 1) avaiabilty of hotel/motel and 2) the astronomical prices of place in Yosemite.

So we have decided to maybe stay just outside the park. Has anyone had any good experience or recommend any place? We are looking into B&B, motels, open to just about anything.

We even investigated renting an RV but when we figured it all out it is less expensive to rent a car and hotel/motel.

Any ideas, or relatives with a spar room near Yosemite;)

Thanks.

Engine Braking

Tried searching, but the AS forum is vast and this topic is well hidden in threads. If you point me to this topic, much appreciated. So, my questions are....how does engine braking work? Can ones engine really survive the RPM's of being pushed down hill by a TT? What is the best approach to truck brake, engine brake, and trailer brake combo?

Came down the Big Horn Pass, WY this summer and was shocked at how much gravity influences the whole rig. I mostly kept it in control. At the bottom ran into another RV'er who proclaimed his awe and said he was turning around and going back to Maryland after that ordeal. I rode my rig down in 2nd gear, avoiding 1st in fear I would explode the engine. Alternated truck and trailer brakes, but avoided all out foot stomping. I have a 2013 Ford F150 8 cyl. auto, 2013 International Signature 23'. Any recommendations about how to safely handle steep downhill grades without burning out the brakes? thanks!

changing roof vents to fan vents

I have a powered fan in my 76 Argosy. I want to add them to my 84 Sovereign. Does anyone have any experience in changing them? Is there wiring already in place near the openings? The schematic in the manual indicates there should be a fan/light combo but I don't have them.

Separate Water Pump? and Recessed Shower Fixture

I am going to put a recessed shower fixture in the shower area (basically one of these: Whale Marine - Products)

Is there a better brand? I don't like that the shower head is so small, but I'm having a hard time finding something larger....suggestions?

That brings me to my other question, regarding a water pump. Does anyone think I'd need 2 water pumps? Or would one, for the whole trailer suffice?

Thanks!

84 Soveriegn tambour restore

Just got a 84 Sovereign 31' and the PO replaced tambour in salon on curb side cabinet with doors. I want to restore to original. Anyone familiar with the cabinet. It acts as a tv stand and ends against the fridge. If anyone has changed out their cabinet and still has the tambour I would be interested. If not any thoughts as to where I can find the original parts?

Filling Water Heater

I have winterized my AI. We are leaving next week to go to Florida so I need to de-winterize it. In reading the instructions in the owner's manual, it says to fill the water heater but does not say how to do this. How do you fill the water heater?

Leaks

As a perspective Airstream owner I would like to know what percentage of Airstreams suffer leaks that rot out the flooring. Do they all leak eventually so you need to be dilligent about checking for floor moisture, is it only after they get a certain age? Really looking to trade my 5th wheel in and downsize to a long lasting unit.

Adapter Confusion

I'm not only a newbie but also completely electricity-illiterate, so I'm not even sure how to ask this question, but here goes. My 2006 22' CCD is 30-amp and I'm going to a private campsite next summer that will only have a 50-amp connection. Do I need an adapter, and if so, which one? I'm confused by the numbers. Is there such a thing as a 50- to 30-amp as well as a 30- to 50-amp adapter? Does it matter which way the adapter is hooked up between the Airstream electrical cord and the campsite plug-in? Thanks in advance for any help.

SOME Boondockers are real DIM LUMINARIES

Boondocking during the day is simple. Open the door and stick your head out to see what and where you are camped. At night it use to be... dark and DIM. Boondocking for the "brightest" is the point of this Thread.

FLASHLIGHTS.

Most gizmos we find interesting are found at our local Costco stores. The LED flashlights ARE sunlight in a "tube". Our first LED flashlight was about 5 inches long and 100 lumens. Then, regular introductions went to 300 lumens, 500 lumens and the latest, longest and brightest flashlight... 1000 lumens.

The five pound aluminum tube flashlight with four or five D Cells batteries is a match in a Football Field, compared to an exploding Sun Tube, less than six inches of pure white sunlight in a tube. These 300 to 500 lumen flashlights are sunlight in a tube. Our latest purchase of a 1,000 lumen... is still in the sealed pack. I am nervous about even opening it, sliding the four C Cell batteries into it... not knowing WHAT to expect. I am concerned that Permits, with your photograph, might be required to carry these concealed in a Pocket or Light Holster in the woods, public buildings or towing a trailer that does not indicate "1000 Lumen On Board" notice.

What does this have to do with Boondocking? There are times I want to know what is going "bump" in the dark while camped in the woods. This Star Wars Jedi light source... just the 500 lumen could discourage Darth Vader from breathing heavily for a moment is a wonder of engineering. Probably the most important invention since the invention of candles and wooden stick self igniting matches in a carton!

Since I have been reluctant to load the four C Cell batteries into the One Thousand Lumen Star Wars Jedi Light... has anyone else been brave enough to fire this thing up, yet? Having this much power in one mortal's hand is possibly more than most can retain control. An age requirement for use should be posted for those under 12 years and over 55 years old...

So you torch, candle and lantern carrying Homo Sapiens... when have you entered the 21st Century of actual Sunshine in a Tube revolution?

Caution: When using the 1,000 lumen flashlight, sun glasses may be required to avoid temporary blindness from just the reflection off of a shiny aluminum object parked in the woods.

TV Tonneau Cover Recommendations

I just bought a 2015 Toyota Tundra with the Crew max cab (5 1/2 foot bed) and I am looking for recommendations for a Tonneau Cover. Some people have told me to go with a one piece painted cover and others have recommended a folding cover.

Trip plan from Calif. to Denver in winter

Hoping someone out there can give me some travel advise. I will need to travel from Sacramento area to Denver in early to mid March pulling a 25 foot AS with a Dodge 1500. It's two wheel drive without snow tires. I am considering using I-80 or dropping down south and taking I-40. Another possibility is taking US50 out of the Reno area. It crosses Nevada and Utah then catches I70 in Eastern Utah. I have never traveled US50 and thus I don't know if it has high passes that would likely have snow or if there are campgrounds along the way that would be open in the winter.

If anyone know this route I would really appreciate your advice.

Gray Water Tank Level Indicators

This may have already been addressed somewhere in the Forum, but has anyone installed level indicators on the gray water tanks VTS sells that fits between the rails. I have installed two on my 31' Sovereign and need help on what will work best to monitor the water levels. I need to hook up my new fresh water tank and the black tank indicators as well. Any help would be appreciated on the best unit for these tanks.

Which Pentek filter

I have a 2013 International that has a Pentek GS-10ro under sink water filter. Our Airstream is stored out of state and I'd like to get a replacement filter ordered for it ASAP. We will be heading down to AZ soon to be using it and I'm not sure of the specific filter. There is a GS-10ro-B, GS-10ro-C, GS-10ro-G, etc. with different size fittings.

Has anyone ordered a replacement for a newer trailer and know which one is the correct model?

Thanks!

door replacement

Can I replace my exterior door on my 71 31 ft sovereign with a door from a 71 overland? if so how do you remove door? Do I simply drive out the long pin or is there some kind of holder or keeper I have to remove first.

Generator not charging batteries

I'm still a newbie at this, bought a 1998 31' land yacht about a year ago, I always assumed the generator would recharge my deep cycle batteries but put it to the test today. No luck. I'm sure the generator works properly, I can run both ac's with no shore power. Am I missing something?

Thanks for any help.

New looker!

I have long been a lover of vintage Airstreams. While I'm not yet a lucky owner, my husband bought me two books for Christmas. I am excited, as this was my green light to begin peeking!!! The books are "Restoring a Dream" and "Airstream Custom Interiors".

I have been perusing the boards and using detailed searches, looking for a price point on a remodel. While I adore the vintage exterior, I would like a completely remodeled interior, lighter and brighter with a rear bedroom/middle bath. I also need it to sleep at least four, more would be a bonus. Understanding there is a vast amount of work to be done that is outside my scope of expertise, I will have to hire out for the remodel.

My initial questions are- 1. What is the average cost of a remodel with good quality materials (nice cabinetry, solid surface counters, wood floors, etc) for a larger 26+ Airstream? 2. Might there be significant savings to sub out the work by type (hire separate electrician, plumber, carpenter)?

Thanks so much for your time!

Nicole

Skylight isn't leaking, it's condensation

A while ago I was trying to track down a leak around the plastic skylight. The original failed and was the source of enough water to rot almost the entire floor of the trailer. I replaced that, and replaced the skylight with another plastic one, which lasted a year and then failed, then a fiberglass one, single layer. I've had odd leaks over the 9 years since that was replaced and then figured out that it is condensation, and it's simply raining INSIDE the trailer. The time has come to replace this skylight with something double glazed. I want something that is transparent, maybe tinted to limit solar gain, but I want to see out. I think condensation is causing some other wet areas, nothing too bad, and I'm curious if others have had this experience and if there are any clever solutions floating around. Thanks

Airstream Jam Rally?

Dave and Nancy from Oregon started a thread recently mentioning they take their guitar and keyboard on the road. As a bass player myself, I'm curious if there are any music jams across the country specifically associated with an Airstream rally? I've participated in bluegrass jams and gospel jams but haven't seen any Airstream Jams. I'm certain there are other players out there who might enjoy such a rally. Here on the East Coast we have access to many bluegrass festivals...any some are held at campgrounds. Any interest?

Am I just a naive semi-newbie, need elder advice.

I have a 2013 FC RB and have successfully pulled it about 4k miles these past 9 months with my F 150 with no problems I'm aware of. OK, but here's the issue - I don't have a sway bar. Do I need one and if so why?

No water from city line

My mom just arrived at her AS in Florida to discover she has a water problem. There is no water coming into the trailer through the city hookup. She filled the freshwater tank and can use the pump to get water in the trailer, but no water from a direct hookup. Any idea what might be wrong?
